The bolts are well oiled at this point lol, I bought it like this, previous owner just told me that 4th and 5th are out, so to hell with this trans. Any chance a awd 1.8 trans will hold the power? I've been told that the 1.8 and 2.2 awd trans' are the same besides gear ratios, and we've ran a 2.2 budget turbo build on a stock 2.2 trans for quite some time with lots of abusive driving. No problems so far.

I checked again and it will move to the 1-2 and 3-4 shift rails, but not to the 5-r rail. My guess is the shift arm came out of the rail somehow and that fork is still in reverse. No amount of jiggling or pressure will get it back into th3 "reverse" position again. A friend told me to pull the reverse sensor and try to push the rail back to neutral. Im gonna try that when it isnt drizzly outside

I buy new empi (empire) axles from rockauto. Good quality. No refailures yet on about 10 axles

Yeah it moved to neutral but now barely moves (bushing slop mostly) still in reverse. I just bought it and it seems like it had a pretty hard life. Already tried rocking it. I reversed the car into the rollback to tow it and pushed in the clutch and rolled off to park it. I guess the trans is coming down

02 2.5l 5mt non turbo sport wagon. First, I consider myself pretty good with subarus but before I pull this trans, I need to ask if anyone has any advice. The car will back up on its own and roll forward with the clutch in. The shifter came out of reverse to neutral position, but will not move any more. Car is still in reverse gear. Just wanting to see if anyone has had this problem and what was it? Thanks!

and to the OP, I wanted to let you know I wasn't trying to start a peeing match, I work for a shop and we frequently have dodges come in and are just terrible. I had to goop a window switch back into a charger just today. fell out when I merely rolled the window down.

The car has almost 147K on it, so to me that isn't low miles. Now to others here that may be low miles. However if you saw my driver seat, you would not have any confusion as to whether or not this car was a garage queen. The only time it sat unused was in 2002 when I got a brand new Dodge Ram 1500 to pull my speedboat. Just sitting, the tires became out of round and when I drove it again I got terrible vibrations at higway speeds as if the front end was shaking appart
I do think there is something to Gary's theory though especially when it comes to the engine. I make sure to drive my Ram Truck periodically on long highway runs to keep the moisture out of the fluids. But for the switch, just looking at the pieces and where it crumbled, I lean to a poorly made switch. Or maybe just a "budget plastic" switch as others have suggested. I noticed the manufacture name on the switch was Koite. I wonder if Subaru still uses them as a subcontractor.
At any rate, I filled the voids surrounding the extrusions where the screws attach with some epoxy and this switch will probably outlast the rest of the car.
WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! I know you didn't just compare dodge plastic to subaru plastic. Obvoulsy if your dash panel(the trim across the dash on the 02+ and the whole freaking dash on the 01 down) is not completely gone or broken to hell without ever being touched, your truck is a garage queen or you are darn lucky. Do some back research on dodge truck dashes and tell me subaru plastic is junk...

You probably have a plugged cat. My Foerster set the 420 code and I drive it like that for about 20k. It strayed bucking and stalling and feeling gutless. I pulled the cat off and looked inside and the honey comb had melted down, restricting about 60% of exhaust flow...

I have had an old rear strut make that noise before

The struts are not the same. The shaft tip that mounts into the top hat is different. You can also back and fourth like I said near but the rewrs will knock and squeak because the strut shaft does not sit right in the top hat. I have heard of some people using washes to sandwich the hats into the shaft but haven't tried it. I just listened to the noise till I sold the car

i'm hoping to get a new cordless cutoff tool for christmas or tax time. I am gonna start cutting out patch panels for real. I forgot about this post!
Thanks for the pic!, my legacy is kinda iffy there, I am gonna pour some phosphoric acid in there and seal that hole before my rear quarters go to hell too!
Only saving grace is that in texas, we don't get salt because snow and ice (if we even get it) never stays long enough to need melting, so they just find the slippery spots and run a sand spreader over em.

no. the top hat from the 92 shares the same top hat bolt pattern as 02 to 07 imprezas. the 90-91 legacy shares the top hat pattern as 93-01 impreza. You can use an 93-01 impreza rear top hat, if your spring is conical, just don't use the metal spring part, let the spring sit on the hat itself. Reuse the rubber strip from your old top hat.
that's how I am rolling agx's and 05 sti springs on my first gen coupe

yes and no. the top hats are different, and if you use the rear top hats from the 91, they will knock like hell
You can use a washer assortment and some inginuity to get rid of the knocking. look at the strut shafts, and how they mount to the top hats and you shall see what I mean.

Wow, your cars really rust out something fierce in the USA. I thought NZ was bad being pretty much an island, but I've never seen an Imp with bad rust like that. Hell, my 89 Legacy doesn't even have any rust in it.

Thanks for posting. I have the recurring P0420 on my 05 OB.
Recently, after I erase the codes, I haven't been able to get to "Ready" before the CEL goes on again.
I will retrain myself and try the recommended method and report back tomorrow.
screw an oil fouler in between the rear o2 sensor and it's exhaust bung. problem solved

it should be 570 ohm, but don't do this, the ecu will run up the timing to find it's limit, and It will never find it, therefore pinging like hell. ask me how I know.
also, a partially plugged cat caused my forester to do similar things, but when it would bog down, it would lurch and bog, lurch and bog about 5 times before it would finally get the hint and take off. new cat bolted on and problem solved.
You could also put a vaccum guage on it and see if the vaccum drops a crap ton when it's bogging, which would indicate a crapped out cat.

I have a box of huge bolts from several engines, a helper of mine threw all the bolts from several engines in a box. I don't want to use the wrong bolts.

I need the specs (length and count) on the engine case bolts for a 2.5 phase 2. I got all the bolts thrown in a box, and don't know what is what. Please help.

my 90 legacy did the same thing. I put 38k on it, sold it to my buddy, and he has been driving it 40+ miles per day since then, that was in march I miss that car, but it's still kickin. As soon as it made the noise, I changed the fluid, then 20k after that and he has changed it once also at 20k after the last one.
keep the fluid clean, keep the bearing longer!

yeah I noticed the little rust there. to me on this forum, there isn't any lol. especially after seeing the rust hole gl's up north.
My financial backer (friend with the money) had to work mandatory overtime today so I was not able to make it out there...
