  1. Sorry it took me so long to get these, The cars kind of in a shed right now and behind some stuff you know how it is  Anyway this is what I did (my dad has a pipe bender at his shop so that made it easy!) It sounds really good too!

Off subject. I was reading another post you had made in reference to picture sizes. I run a mac also and was wondering what you did to downsize your pics.

  2. ok, so i was unable to find that collector, covered in snow somwhere on the property. it's the one i had on my car before i decided to go duels. a friend of mine has a car with a collector that i built tho, ill talk him into bringing it over for a pic.

Chim, your buddy ever bring his car by for you to get the pic? I like what 1982gl4 did on his, just like to see other variations.

  3. I do have one question if anyone could answer it I rebuilt the carburator about 2 days after I got the vehicle which helped alot however when I turn the key to the on position it dosent prime the fuel into the float bowl to start the car insted I have to hook a jumper line directly to the battery to prime the carb to start the car are these vehicles not ones that do self prime when the ignition is turned on or do I just need a stronger fuel pump to put more fuel through while starting?

I only know this from asking the same question, the fuel pump on these only works while the engine is turning. You won't get fuel to the carb until you start cranking the engine, and while it running. On here somewhere is the "How to keep your Subaru alive" manual. it has really good explanation of how to trace down what your trying to figure out. Good luck! Cheers! :)

  4. I read the same post by GD. I took the advise on my rebuild. I found you get a smoother finish if you put the RTV on one side then put that side on a piece of plastic and let dry. Then do the same with the other side. I haven't installed yet, but have done the sealing, looks like it will work out quite nicely. I used a marine sealant on my head gaskets (recomended by a good mechanic friend) instead of RTV, cause I couldn't find the stuff from the Subaru manual.

  5. You didn't, by chance, forget to hookup the tach signal wire did you? It's the yellow one off the negative coil terminal. It also runs the fuel pump control unit - which runs at key-on and would fill the float bowl then cease to run after being started (with no tach signal) and the engine would die after the bowl empties.

I will look at that, but I'm pretty sure I did. What your describing sounds exactly like what's going on though. I've been waiting for your input, you always seem to have a good answer for trouble with these Soob's.

  6. Don't the early EA81 cars only get power to the fuel pump if the alternator is working? It's been a while but you might check for power to the fuel pump. Good Luck!

I was looking at the alternator last night and noticed the wiring has a ground connection that the newer alt does not have. But was thinking, why would it start if the fuel pump wasn't working? If I'm not getting fuel, shouldn't get light off (in theory). I'm also going to look at the fuel return line , as well as changing the rear filter.

  7. I pulled an 87 EA81 out of an 82 wagon. Car had been sitting for 3 years or so due to an accident. Anyway, I took a look at it checked fluids and connected a battery, after a short amount of cranking it fired up. I ran it for a few minutes, and besides needing the valves adjusted I didn't notice anything else wrong with the run. So I thought i'd pull it out of the wrecked wagon and put it in my 81 wagon as a temp till I finished rebuilding the EA81 on the bench. Took a few hours to pull, install and swap the intake wire bundle. Get everything hooked up fire it up, and she fired right up, then died 10-15 seconds later. Took a look at the install, oh missed a couple vacuum lines, reconnected them fire it up again and the same thing. Tried a couple more times just to make sure I didn't miss anything else, no luck.:-\

I did a quick search but only found threads where the motor would run for several minutes then quit, and then refire and quit after several minutes. These were told to replace the rear fuel filter. I was thinking a fuel pump issue, but with the 87 motor the intake has less connections on the harness than the 81. The 81 has a couple extra sensors in the intake that the 87 doesn't have, I kind of think this may be part of my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

    John
