I have a 97 subie impreza sport that is having a bit of trouble shifting into 2nd gear, it is worse when its cold out.
MY clutch pads are great, and adjusted correctly. Can anybody help me.
There is also a ton of play in my trans, could that have something to do with it. The play doesnt effect the way the car shifts. Just kind of anoying.
thanks!

sounds like a synchro issue, the good thing is these can essentially stay the same forever and never really cause problems or get worse. change your gear oil, it's probably never been done? how many miles? i would just go with the proper weight quality synthetic oil. avoid additives and concoctions in this case.
don't down shift and skip 2nd:lol:? just kidding, well you could skip down shifting into 2nd. i'm not sold on the value of downshifting myself. brakes = $40 and easy. downshifting means more stress on clutch, engine, trans, driveline, etc and that stuff is time and $. but i realize that's not the industry standard so i'm way off what everyone else thinks. i guess i'm wrong but i'll continue to use my brakes and not downshift unless necessary.
you can probably start by replacing one O2 sensor, the front.
i have a 1997 subaru impreza sport. I want some really high quality gear oil. What would you recommend. And are there any tricks in changing the gear oil in a subaru?
Thanks!

ha, wonder what all you're not disclosing. don't know about the manual, changing oil might clean up what you've already done. can't hurt. when are you downshifting, how fast, you might want to be nice to those synchros from now on and just clutch it from 3rd until you stop (until you figure out if the oil change clears it up).
sensors from http://www.chaplinssubarugenuineparts.com ~$7 minimum shipping
edit: make sure your clutch is adjusted or not worn out, don't know why that would just affect 2nd tho. but worth ruling out.
Thanks Will check that out.. ill get back with you

Hey guys i have a 1997 subaru impreza sport. i need a few things done.
First of all my car is having a bit of trouble shifting into 2nd gear. its not grinding at all... just crunches a bit especially down shifting.
I was told to just change my gear oil. Any good brands or suggestions?
Second of all i need a pair of O2 sensors, where is a good place to purchase them online?
thanks guys!

nothing a little silicone on the windshield wont fix

might have been sold in 1997 but forester first year was '98.
anyways, 98-01 stuff should be the same. OB stuff might be a better choice (not quite as high as FOZ)
you will need to keep your rear tophats.
What size tires do you have-are you sure a lift will clear up the rub on turning?
it only rubs when i go over a bump or somthing... nto when im turning

Nice ride bro

I have a 97 impreza sport. Not the outback sport.....
I threw some tires on there that are a bit too big for my wheel well. I need to do a quick small lift, i heard if i take struts from an outback that would work. Now would i have to replace all struts and what year and style of outback struts would i need. or is there an easier way to lift it?
Thanks Guys

I have got a 1997 Subaru Impreza Sport and the heat shield rattles really bad in between shifts and when i accelerate hard, i was thinking i could either weld it or hose clamp it. Hose clamping it would be alot easier but will it last.
can anybody help me out here?
i really appreciate any answer!
thanks guys
