  1. I got some folks in a trailer park selling an 01 legacy L, manual 5speed, power everything (functional), cd player, with 230k miles on it. It has pretty new tires, clutch in at 30k miles ago (with receipt for proof), and a somewhat stained up interior. Now I test drove it and it all seemed running well. Got up to speed nice and easy... all seemed well mechanically (i'm not a mechanic, but could generally handy-man anything that went wrong on my other subs). Anyways, they had it listed at 2400, I said I wouldn't do over 1k, they said 1200 was their low number. Now... what do you guys think of that price? I mean I paid between 800-1200 for my other rides(85/87 gl, and 91 loyale) so I'm thinking 1200 for this 01 seems not too shabby, but then again 230k miles is A LOT!... They didn't know if the head gasket had ever been blown/redone. what would you do
  2. Thanks for the input all. Moving on to the next...
  3. wagon. slight rust on bottom of wheel wells. I'm going to go drive it here in about an hour. not sure on suspension?
  4. according to the owner. i have popped the hood yet: 86 ea82 turbo, fuel injected 170k miles little rust new tires decent brakes power everything fancy digital dash cv axeles etc in good shape push button 4wd it has the TOD slight oil leak 1000 bucks. I have owned an 86 gl, and now 91 loyale. My folks are looking for a car for my sis who is 18. What do you think? Any negotiation techniques? I have heard the turbo motors kind of suck... let me know your opinions. Thanks!
  5. yah i actually tried that and they said they didn't have my VIN ...as far as the allen wrench - im curious also
  6. wooooo- found the key.... going to make a copy
  7. so i locked myself out of my car.. and I've lost the key. 1990 loyale. any tips on getting in and getting the key barrel or whatever its called out of the passenger door so I can get the key code?
  8. ya- actually some guy ran into her- HARD.... T intersection and the guy wasnt paying attention- ran right into her. Lucky it was on the passenger side
  9. So I bought an 86 gl 5 spd d/r ea2 in aug 09... 1 year ago it had this happened (see the first image) to it while just sitting there parked- a nice hit and run job around 12 am...really appreciated it. after that- about 3 weeks later- someone else hit and ran on me. I had put a 'custom bumper' on the front made of some tubing and luckily I had, because the guy freaking bent the tubes nearly in half and probably would have crawled onto my hood. well my sis is in high school and needed a little car to get around in, new driver. So I passed it on to my fam and picked up a 1990 loyale ea82 5spd 4wd....well two weeks after they took the car ....well you can see the other two pics. Apparently little red here was not meant to live... so now its pretty well totaled out. Just thought I would share that story. Quick question- would the clutch etc in the 86 be compatible with the 1990 loyale I just got. If its worth it I suppose I will just keep the 86 around for parts- They both have the ea82- so are the parts interchangeable and is it worth keeping the 86?
  10. I had an 86 gl...but two hit and runs later it wasnt chugging along quite that well. Just a few questions- I had a nice book for my 86 that outlined a lot of the maintenance and how to stuff- is there a good one for the loyale? Also- it seems to be running pretty well, no problems- any maintenance items I should look into? It has 144k miles on it and the guy I bought it from inherited it from his mother in law who was the original owner. Any quirks or anything I should look for? The only maintenance he had done he said really was the plugs this last year. Theres a nice pic for you
  11. so the fan switch is located under the glove box?- yeah it doesnt work on any of the 1-4 when it isnt working. When it is working it will go up and down based on being on 1,2,3, or 4. Ill check the fan switch thing-
  12. alright- so I got to the cable and everything. It wasnt broken. But its odd because even though the dial doesnt slide down all the way - I found the door or vent thing that it opens and shuts and its pretty much opening and closing all the way- its kind of odd. I also opened that black box thing that the heater core is in and it was full of leaves and crap. Now the problem is that the heater/fan/ac whatever- only works sporadically. Sometimes when I turn the car on the fan will work and other times it wont. Anyone wanna take a stab at why this might be happening? I'm guessing some type of electrical problem, but have no idea. As a side note. I have a little vacuum that I can plug into the cig lighter. When the fan is working and I turn it up to 4 it will drag some power off the vac. But when the fan is not working and I turn it up it doesnt take any power from the vac. So its like the fan is not getting power- not like its just a broken or something. any insight would be much appreciated. I just wanna get this figured out before winter strikes again and I can't defrost my car.
  13. Just curious... I think the cables behind my dash that control my hot and cold broke or something ( I really am not sure) but now I cant slide the temp gauge must past half way down. Do you assume I will need to remove the dash to fix this problem- and I assume the process will suck really bad- but just how bad- and do you have any pointers?
  14. 86 GL wagon So yesterday I was driving down the highway and I was switching between the defrost and vent heater. Well I clicked the ac and then defrost and then it was like blowing out both the defrost and the vent and then it just stopped blowing all together. I notice that my guage for adjusting the temp (the blue to red throttle thing) will only go down like halfway now. I turned off and on the heater and nothing happened. I turned the knob from 1-4 a few times and nothing. Well this morning I turned on my car and it was blowing again. The problem is that it is cold, or not very warm at least. I stuck a knife in to pry the heater (blue to red) thing up all the way and it seems like it got a bit warmer. Any ideas on what is going on here? Did a cable break behind the dash or what? Great time to go out out...been in the single digits here for the past few days....haha
  15. Howdy- So I have an 86 gl, ea82. I went out fishing today in the mountains and when I threw it in 4wd I noticed this loud like clinking metal on metal noise or something. It sounded like it was coming from the rear end. When I took it out of 4wd it went away. As I increase in speed the noise also increases. I was out just a few weeks with it in 4wd and I didn't hear anything like this. What could be causing this? and what might have caused the change. Thanks
  16. So ive got a 86 gl. There are the two belts...the one that it more to the rear that has that tensioner pulley or whatever it is down closer to the driver side. Mine seized up. Do you actually need both the belts? It seems like they both wrap around the exact same stuff. Whats the point? And can I just rip the bearings out of that pulley and replace it or do I need to buy a new one? If so- where at? ps- i tried doing some searching but i'm an idiot so here i am posting. Also- im not 100% sure what the pulley is called. I pulled it out and its not hooked to anything integral to the running of the car so I was just assuming it was for holding tension or something like that. Thanks for the help!
  17. Howdy- So about 4 months ago I had to put a new alternator in my 86 gl. Recently my volts have been riding a little low when I fire up my car. They are at like 10 or lower...12 is in the middle right? should be at about 13? Well anyways I had the battery checked and it was good. The weird thing is, is when I rev it up to just about 4000 rpms the voltage will jump up to the 13 mark and stay there no problem. What do you think the problem could be? Oh- and I don't think it just the gauge either because if my lights are on and the voltage it low they are really dim, hit that 4k mark and they light right up. Thanks for any help.
  18. Anyone know the dimension of a brat bed? like an 82. Im thinking of buying one but wanna know if my honda shadow can fit in the bed of it, Thanks.
  19. Sorry - i'm sure this gets posted on semi-regularly. I was trying to search, but didnt have much luck. You can make me look like an idiot and refer me to a link if you so desire...Anyways- have an 86 gl wagon ea82, carb. Ive been getting 18 MPG's lately. I was wondering if you guys experience that bad or if there is something I could look into to improving this a little bit. It seemed like i was at least getting in the low 20's a few months ago... Thanks
  20. Hi- Today I was doing some maintenance on the ride and I have been having problems with being able to go fast or accelerate or whatever so I decided to check the acceleration cable. It was pretty loose, and even with my pedal floored it was not opening up all the way. Well I tightened it up to have about 1/8'' give or whatever when floored, it fixed my initial problem. But now it idles really high. I was reading in my keep my subaru alive book and it says I can basically just mess with the idle speed screw on the carb to slow it down. is that the best thing to do, or should I just loosen up the cable a bit? And as far as checking the idle...when screwing with the screw...does the tach on my dash work fine for checking it. I guess it should be idling at about 930 rpm...correct? Any help is appreciated. Thanks a bunch. Hopefully I don't sound like too big of an idiot
  21. Howdy, I was just curious what you guys had done as far as exhaust systems on your ea82's. I want something that sounds kinda loud, but doesn't rob me of any of the little power that I already have. I'm not really sure how the whole exhaust system operates so any tips or just what you did would be cool. Thanks
  22. My heater hasnt been working this winter and so yesterday I replaced the t-stat. Now it works like a charm. Nice to get out of my -10 weather i've been having in idaho lately. The question I have is that when i push the AC button the air will blow the hardest. I have the temp set to heat. The thing im wondering is if this is bad to run my 'ac' like this. Does running the AC in heater mode do anything bad to my AC? its an 86 gl ea82. I prefer to use the ac because the bi-level just doesnt blow as furious as i would like. Thanks I hope this made sense....if it didn't ill try and rephrase....
  23. Whats the advantage to upgrading the ignition coil in my 86 gl wagon? Ea82. I was just curious, i was reading on the 'online repair manual' thing on the 80s subaru website and they had a section on the thing. I was looking on ebay and i can get one for like 10 bucks, so if it does anything worthwhile, and it seems like an easy install, why not. So whats the point? Thanks
  24. I'm looking to make a brush guard. My skills (as far as welding and fab) are slightly limited but im pretty sure my buddies and I can figure it out just fine. Its going to go on am 86 gl wagon. I would just like either some pics of the ones you all made along with the materials that where used and how it was done. Any help is greatly appreciated- Thanks!
