  1. ok, here's a question...has anyone on here had the pcv valve broken off inside the intake manifold? mine is broken off so i stuck a screw in it to keep it running. every mechanic to whom i told this too looked at me like i must be on crack, but it's been running fine for 2 years like that. now that i'm going to be fixing some other stuff to get it running again (idlers and such in the timing system) i figured, hey why not finally fix that too...so, if anyone else has had this problem what is the easiest solution to it? drilling and tapping? it's a tight squeaze to fit anything in that area. anyone done this befor, know what size taps i should use? and finally where can i find the hoses that connect to the pcv valve? autozone wouldn't sell me tube cut to size because mine was "pre bent" and blah blah blah and it would affect something or other. i've never heard that before but jesus, autozone never wants to sell me anything for my car. they wouldn't sell me flex pipe for my exhaust. i was at napa getting some belts for my car and i noticed allot of hoses hanging in thier back room, so i'm thinking i should just grab the one i have left and take it down there. napa is quickly becoming one of my favoured establishments as they actually sell me the things i need instead of giving me a bologna answer as to why i can't use it. anyway back to the point...how long will this take, and any tips/pointers/tricks to get it done smoothly ? thanks
  2. can you give me some pointers on fixing this??? my haynes book is useless in this situation. i'm going to try to do this on this coming weekend. if the guy still has the parts....i hope i can fix her. she's my most favourite thing in the whole wide world!!!!!!
  3. my haynes book is about as usefull as toilet paper for this project. i have found parts on ebay that are about 25 bucks a pop. now i need to know exactly how to put them on and how to get the old ones off. the idle pulley and tensioner are broken so the timing belt isn't moving right and it's making a loud rattle from the belt being loose and so forth and i can't get my car to stay running. so can someone please tell me either where i can get a good guide for this or walk me through it>? it's a 90 loyale 4wd auto ohc 1.8l please please please please help me. otherwise, i will be forced to buy a taurus! if you want to contact me off of here, my email is aprilmicci@hotmail.com
  4. it's pretty bad in there. i've been looking for replacement parts with no avail, so my poor little baby is getting the hatchett and i'm going to part her out. sob sob. i'm not looking forward to next winter when i need t shovel my snow and my parking space out. or when i can't just drive over curbs and not do any damage to anything. this is going to suck. granted, my mom bought me this car for only 400 bucks, i've been putting allot of work into it since then. at least a grand, easy. i wish that the magic subaru fairy would come and wave a magic wand and fix it!
  5. ok folks, i have a 90 loyale automatic 4wd. i had a leak out of the flange on the header...which melting the timing belt case cover...and then also proceeded to melt the ************ out of the bushings on the insides of the gears and the tensioner that is right next to it. they are located behind the water pump pully. i believe it's the idle speed gear. but not sure. the engine is still good. i didn't mess anything up besides that gear and the pully. so now what i need to know is should i sell her or should i try to fix her and what is my best bet on parts? she was due for inspection and registration today but for the past two days i've been up to by armpits in grease and it doesn't look like i'll fix it anytime soon. if anyone can give me help on this i would appreciate it because my stepdad and i are going to need all the help we can get. if anyone is interested in buying it it needs to be towed but it is still fixable and driveable. the exhaust up to the two headers is completly new, it has two new axles, the starter is a year old and the alternator is a year old. about 200 k miles.
  6. hey everyone, i need some help with my fusable links. they aren't color coded and i don't know which link is for what, but i need to wiggle them to start my car sometimes. i think i need a new accesory box or whatever that black thing is in which the fusable links are clipped. thanks! 90 loyal-
  7. yeah, they just started to do emissions here in northampton county a little while ago. i know a mechanic who will pass the emissions, and the only thing on the safety part he looks at are the brakes. so i guess i'll be ok till monday since my cars getting fixed this weekend.
  8. so, my fusable links kept burning out and when i made my boyfriend make new ones he didn't use the same color wire as the old ones. i have a 90 subaru loyale, so who knows which link is for what?
  9. Hey, does anyone know about PA inspections on cars? I've never gotten one inspected before and my subaru needs a catalytic converter, pcv valve, vacum lines, and a bolt drilled & tapped out of the mount for the altenator slide so i'm pretty damn sure it is failing. when you fail, do they give you a sticker or something to put on with a limited time to get it fixed>? i think NJ gives you something like 2 weeks to get it fixed....wondering about PA. ALSO.....why is it that NO ONE carries a universal catalytic converter for my car??? its so annoying!!!! i have to wait till thurs if i order one...
  10. the fan works...i had the system flushed and still didn't have heat. my coolant is good...still no leaks from heater core so i really can't figure out what the deal is. one thing i noticed is that the selector switches for defrost, heat, bilevel etc. gets really hot. i'm assuming i've got a major electrical problem...as my car OFTEN shocks the hell out of me and the cig liter fuse constantly burns out and my battery gages wabbles around constantly. my uncle grabbed the hoses and said it was ok he's stumped too. my gas milage is still super good i read something on that being affected by running cold. it must be a sensor or electrical problem. or an IDIOT named bill who has a rip off garage somewhere in the bowels of Indiana. I swear indiana is just cursed. on the way to chicago my exhaust clogged and i drilled holes in it. on the way home my bearing rips out of my water pump. regardless...it's almost spring so i won't really be needing my heat much anyway. since i've got to get the ac recharged i'll have them look at it then. it's nothing too serious since my car still runs allright. if i get approved for the 189 lease on the imprezza i'm just gonna sell this baby.
  11. my aunt had an outback and the wheel came off whilst driving. my loyale had a bearing problem that was fixed 2 times, then i had the wheel come off in a parking lot because my hub assembly went. take off your tire and inspect around the castor nut if it is loose even with the cotter pin in it you probably have a stripped assembly. if there are lots of little metal shavings around the nut that too should give you an idea. but search the newere gen message board you should find someone that can help you
  12. same problem in my 90 loyale. no heat either. sometimes lukewarm at best. just had a new water pump put in...no leaks under dash... replaced thermostat and it is functional...also got a flush and still no heat like before my water pump went. any ideas?
  13. 390,000 km...how many miles is that? my 90 loyal is at 197,000 and counting...the engine is still good, but i can't help feeling that i will end up like the three stooges and while i'm driving down the road the car is just going to fall apart and i'll be left with an engine and a steering wheel lol.
  14. i have a 90 loyale and i've got starting problems in the cold. i live in PA and this is my first winter with the car... as far as i can tell my start problems stems from the electrical system. my fusable links are bad and when it's cold i have to jiggle the wires around to get my car to start.
  15. have you ever had any problems with your loyale sliding about a bit? i got hit with the storm yesterday and my car's back end was sliding about a bit in 4wd. i have a 90...is there a fuse for that under the hood that i should check out? my wheel froze up on me in clear weather last week and i did a complete 360 going around an s curve at about 50 which is how i usually drive it. i've come to believe that my care is possessed by satan or something with all the wierd ****e it's been doing.
  16. before my car broke down, i had heat. i was stranded in indiana and paid 500 to get 10 mile tow, waterpump, and fan clutch on my 90 loyale. if i'm ever in that town again i'm going to track down the so called mechanic and bludgen him to death. well, that being said...i have no heat and my engine is running really really cold. thought it was the thermostat so got a new one and put it in a few days ago. still no heat. i have no water leaking anywhere so i don't know if it's my heater core or what. maybe my wiring is screwed up and no power is getting to where it needs to be. who knows. but if any of you have a solution, please give it up cause i'm the only person i know who has to use the ice scraper on the INSIDE of the car.
  17. ok, my antifreeze seems to be doing a pretty damned good dissapearing act. no puddles under the car but it's empty every week. when the weather is cold and i start my car you may think that i'm batman using my smoke screen. it's quite bad but after a few minutes it's gone. there's barely any heat. i was thinking that may be the heater core, but i have no leaks on the inside. i don't know if it's the head gasket but i'm hoping it's NOT. my oil pressure gage hasn't worked in years, so it does no good. any one else have similar problems with a loyale? it's a 90...190,000 miles... april
  18. a locking tab? there was something there that i used pliars to pry open..... my uncle is coming over soon after he puts a headlight in his car... so we're going to try to get this done in the dark. if it works i will be a very happy gal.
  19. ok, put in a new starter, now i need new cables as well. trying to take the accesory cable out and can't. does it come out? i think i just ****ed it up if it doesn't. my new battery cable is one piece, the accesory line comes off of it. the old cable has an entirely separte accesory cable that comes off of the box mounted to the coolant resevour. so...hypothically speaking...if i were to go ape**** on it with a pair of needlenose pliars, exactly how ****ed would i be?
  20. it's an automatic.....and this is what is confusing....i have two places for fluid under my hood....the one is always fine and in my book that says manual....the one that's always dry is automatic.....
  21. oooh i have a question for anyone reading.....i can't find any leaks or nasty spots under my car but i go through transmission fluid insanely fast. so, either there are secret gnomes who come and steal my fluid or i've got a big problem. I go through a bottle and a half to two bottles ever 3 weeks or so for the past 3-4 months.
  22. the nut seemed to be ok, but the grooves that are on the inside of the hub assembly? are worn nearly smooth....I'm looking through the haynes book but can't find anything on my problem......although the fact that i have pretty much no idea of what i'm looking for might hold me up a bit oh yea, the castle nut had been tightened up and the cotter pin put in, but as soon as the car was engaged in drive the thing that it's on (axl? outer cv? have no clue) starts spinning and the castle nut becomes loose, while hub stays still. whatever it is...i'll have fun getting dirty in the morning while i'm ripping it apart and heading to the junkyard.
  23. My car (90 loyale 4wd) has been making some crazy noises lately and today after work I found out what it was... the hub assembly is stripped, so it makes this horrible noise and everything moves but the tire. I can get this part at a junkyard easily, but can anyone tell me why or how this happens? I've heard allot of stories of front wheels flying off of subarus...so thank god all this mess happened as I was parking! What should I look for to determine what caused the excessive wear? The bearing on this wheel was replaced twice in the past 8 years and it seems that the wheel tilts out at the bottom. Any input would be appreciated!!
