  1. ok they got 2 codes. po 325 which is a knock sensor code and po 420 which is the cat converter apparantly. what do you guys think? is the knock sensor anything serious?
  2. thanks, ill ask them to give me a list of the codes it pulls up and see if you guys have any advice on it after that. it makes me feel better that other people have been told that too.
  3. im going to go look at a 98 forester for sale. The girl had the engine replaced at 94k cause she was on a long trip and forgot to add oil. it now has 150k on it. the engine was replaced at a dealership. so now the check engine light comes on. she said shes been taking it to the local dealership and they say that some of the foresters have a glitch where the CE light comes on and nothings actually wrong with it. they say this is the case with this forester. im gonna go have it checked out by the dealership today before i go and buy it. has anyone heard of this before? is it common? also any thoughts on the new engine and what i need to watch out for when buying a 98 forester...besides cv joints of course. Thanks,
  4. ive been trying nasioc. their are quite a few people on nasioc from their but no one seems willing to go down and take a look at it even if i pay them. Ive even posted on craigslist classified
  5. I found a subaru i really really want at an awesome price. I live in Utah and would have it shipped out to me tomorrow if i knew it wasn't gonna break down on me the moment i got it out here. (its happened to me before) If someone lives near 9820 Parkway East Birmingham, AL 35215 and could go check it out and preferably take it to a mechanic (on my dime) I would pay them. ive done a ton for people on usmb and im hoping that now the favor will be returned. ANYONE?
  6. no check engine light. i will try change back to stock and see if it changes at all. has this ever happened to anyone?
  7. hey guys, i have a problem. my car will just completely lose power at no particular time or gear. The car and electrical do not turn off, but the rpms go down immediately right in the middle of trying to speed up. (i was merging into omcoming traffic yesterday from a stop and pulled out only to completely lose power with a huge truck barreling down on me, fortunately he was able to swerve out of the way, because he was a ways back when i pulled out.) i recently bought a maf adapter and put a haf filter on, but i don't think that would cause this problem. any ideas? i don't particularly want to die anytime soon.
  8. I am purchasing a 96 outback (manual) this week with 99k. Is there anything specific to this year and model that i might need to know. (besides the usual stuff, timming belt etc) like anything going out earlier than its supposed to?
  9. I have an 84 gl wagon and when I drive it the volts go way up when the rpms are high. if there is such a thing as a regulator could that be it? I also took out the alternator a few weeks ago and thought it could be the tension of the belt? anyone know what it could be?
  10. To: coloradosubarurules if you like fj40's, my family has one that has been completely redone and extremely packed with sh** and still has a little classic FJ feel to it. they have finally realized that they will never recoup the costs of all of the stuff on it so they are taking reasonably low offers on it but not advertising it. if you want to know more pm me.
  11. so get this, My battery died and I had to get someone to jump me and after that,,, It just started working??????? whats the deal with that? is it my battery?
  12. hey everyone, I just bought a 98 impreza and its factory cd player worked just fine for about 2 days and then quit. I haven't been able to get it to work since. The stereo/radio still works just not the cd player? any ideas
  13. in that case I would be willing to pay someone for a trade (: ha, (i'll probably have to find one wrecked at a junk yard, but if it was totaled, it would most likely have taken out the front end.) I have a feeling it might be a very long time before I find one.
  14. I want to put the 2.5 rs style hood (hood scoop and vents) and spoiler on my 98 impreza L. Would a hood from an rs fit on an L model? and if it does is it likely that ill ever find one? Also would a spoiler from an rs fit on an L model?
  15. I am buying a really awesome black 98 Impreza 4dr sedan on thursday and I want the RS looking hood and maybe the spoiler. does anyone know the how, what, where and possibilities of that are? Its has WRX rims on it and someone painted the rotors red,,,looks pretty sweet, im so excited. one weird thing about it is,,,the rear bearings, and rear sway bar need replacing, why would the sway bar go out? luckily im getting it for just under 4k because if the replacements. and since im getting a new subie im going to be unfortunately leaving the older generation club and fortunately joining the newer generation by selling my 84 gl wagon, the only reason anyone would want it is because it has the origional chrome rims, brand new 195 tires, and the engine has new heads and stuff. so be looking for it in the marketplace next month.
  16. After a long hard rain, I go to get in my 84 wagon and both the front seats are soaked. There was a leak in the moon roof and the ceiling linning is water-logged and dripping on everything! Well, I needed to get to my classes up at weber state and luckily was leaving a little early. So I cover the drivers seat with towels and the floor mat to sit on, and head out. A little ways out I notice my volts reading below normal in the red. Since its still raining I find a covered place to take a look at the battery/engine and stuff. well, the bolt on the back of the alternator that holds on the wire connecting to the battery had come loose. After turning it twice with a wrench, it completely broke off. I made it home and pardon my french but I was considering selling my subie and driving my toyota camry (which is currently for sale) I have been a subaru addict from day one. no one I have met in utah understands it. I just sold my old 85 hatchback to "spanky pete" and he wrote a story called 1700 miles of doom (or a story of addiction) and I printed it off and showed it to my friends and family to show them that there were other people like me. Chris, you rock! I bought my 84 wagon about 6 months ago in pitiful condition and have put a lot of work into it, taking a lot of parts off the 84 that I sold chris. It has always been my dream to have an old wagon and just pimp it out, (tried going on "pimp my ride", but you have to be from cali) and besides the fact that ive spray painted it (due to lack of funds) and it has significant rust damage it was starting to look pretty bad rump roast. I just can't afford to fix it very often, and if the alternator is screwed than I can't even afford to fix that right now. I have to be able to get to school and back and then to pay for school I have a full time job. I need my subie to work for me. any words of encouragment would be greatly appreciated, or advice. I heard once that "advice is something you ask for when you already know the answer but wish you didn't".................suck. -Tyler
  17. I'm glad that everything ended up going ok for you. That weekend i spent with my family in logan Utah, telling me how stupid I was to 1. drive the car up to Idaho for you and 2. trust you to leave the money in the mailbox. just goes to show, somebody who is willing to drive 1700 miles for an old subaru isn't only trustworthy, they're family.
  18. locking, meaning it locks,,, you would need a key to open it. and I guess if there is a one in an old subaru like you are saying that will fit. I could put a lock on it if it has a top on it that latches or something. That would be great. Ill check those models out and see if I can't make something work!!
  19. does anyone know of a LOCKING center console that would fit (or maybe be jimmy-rigged to fit) an 84 subaru GL wagon?
  20. ok, that might be a lot more simple than i thought, that is good! thanks for all of your help.
  21. ya, that is a little confusing.... its hard to explain. I will try once more. when "brights" switch is off (but headlights switch on), no beams are on. [not normal] [this is the problem] when "brights" switch is on, low and high beams (headlights) are on, toghether. [this is normal] so, the low beam headlights only work if the brights are on, this means i have to have my "brights" on for any/all headlights to work because my low beams don't work when the "brights" are off. sorry so confusing, im trying to make it understandable. any help on what could possibly be the problem would help a lot!
  22. I was driving my 84' subie home from getting registered in idaho (wouldn't pass E/I in my hometown) and my volts were shooting way up. All of my auxiliary lights and all outside/headlights would flare up as my volts fluctuated. My headlights blew out. I eventually realized that my battery was hitting some metal and I think that was the problem, but now my headlights only work when I have the brights on (all four lights work...) but when the brights are off my headlights don't work at all. I have disconnected my bright headlights and just dirve with my brights on (because the other ones work) I am thinking that I blew out a wire and wanted to know where the best place to start looking for that, or whatever might be the problem? p.s. I have checked the fuses Thanks, Steadman
