  1. Perfect! Thank you so much. Now, I hope I can get this all hooked up without getting any grease on my laptop!
  2. OK. Here's some pics. I'll type my questions below each image: Here's my carb. There aren't any vacuums hooked up to the Anti-Dieseling switch are there? I know this is the power brake booster. I just don't know where it connects. Is it possibly this in the next pic?: Is this where the brake booster goes? If not, what does? I suspect this is PCV. Does it connect to the breather? Is there supposed to be a valve? Is this the Air Conditioner idle controller? Again, where does it connect? The other end of this one is a little bit hard to see. It turns straight down and connects to the manifold right near the base of the carb. I know this is the vacuum advance. I suspect it connects directly to the carb. I just don't know which one. This one is the same size as the fuel line. It connects to the group of hard lines. Here's the other end of the hard lines. Do they all go to the vacuum canister? These appear to be connected to the linkage on the other end. OK, here's the ports I found on the carb. You can see all 3 here, but I put in 3 different pics with me identifying each one for clarification. I suspect this is where the timing advance goes. This one is tucked back in there a bit. This one already has a hose on it. I'm wondering if it goes to the breather to open the preheater line. That's all my pics. I think I covered them all. I really appreciate the help. I want to get this right. I would rather not be chasing vacuum problems after we get this thing running. Thank you so much, chris
  3. Thanks for the corrected info. I'll get a photo and post it. chris
  4. Sorry, I just re-read your post. The EA71 Fat-Case didn't come out of a DL? I read something that said the DL was the 1600 and the GL was the 1800. Obviously, I need help with the 1600. Thanks, chris
  5. The engine I'm installing is an EA71 Fat Case. It has the manifold with it. I've bolted on the carb that I took off of the old EA71. I don't have pictures or a diagram showing which ports on the carb are connected to which tubes. I think everything is connected to the manifold, but I'm not completely sure. I know that the Fat Case came from a DL from somewhere between 84 & 87. I'm just hoping someone has a vacuum diagram from one of those vehicles to help me get this right. Thanks, chris
  6. I'm putting an EA71 Fat Case in a '78 brat. My research shows that the EA71 Fat Case must have come out of an 84-87 DL. I have books for the '78, but nothing for the later years. Can anyone help me find the vacuum diagrams for this engine? Thanks, chris
  7. I'm putting an EA71 Fat in a 78 brat. I have the manuals for the 78, but I don't have anything on the Fat. Does anyone have a vacuum diagram for the EA71 Fat? Thanks, chris
  8. Check with cawain. He's building SubaTrikes too.
  9. Thanks to cawain I have been working today with my son installing a fat EA71 in his '78 Brat. The main part of the swap out has gone pretty well. Now we need to study the vacuum diagrams to see how to best install and route all those crazy tubes! We also seem to have misplaced our anti-dieseling switch. I'm sure we'll get there eventually.
  10. Actually, I did find one on Amazon. It's on its way!
  11. Wow! Great link. I loved his VW book. I used it for a frame off restoration of my bug. I didn't know he did a Subaru book. This is GREAT!
  12. I'm not dealing with any particular problem. We're waiting on an engine. While we do, we're going through the other systems to make sure the car is ready when the engine arrives. There are several user provided wires. There are also a lot of splices. I want to get it back as close to original as possible on the wiring. If you are able to dig out the old diagrams it would be a huge help! Thanks, chris
  13. You've hit on my strategy. It worked for me. I knew that if I broke it, I had to give up a weekend to fix it. I think I was in my thirty's before I ever took anything to a mechanic. I would laugh at the fools that paid someone to change their oil. I actually like that the carbs on these things require some tinkering to keep them running right. He needs that.
  14. The ones I got were in Mulberry for $800. I got them for 7. A couple of blown engines and a lot of rust, but for $700 it's some good projects for my 16 year old son & I to team up on.
  15. I've posted a few times and received some excellent answers. I like this message board. My name is Chris Thurstenson. I live in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. That's in the Northwest corner where highway 412 crosses over in to Oklahoma. I bought a 78 Brat off of Craigslist for my son who just turned 16. He and I are going to rebuild it and keep it running together so that he can learn to turn a wrench. The Brat (car not kid) came with a parts vehicle. I'm hoping to build that as a toy for me. I've always admired the Brats from a distance. My son thinks they're cool. I'm kind of a techie. I do home entertainment and home automation as a career. My son is very much of the same mind. When I was 17 my grandpa bought me a 78 Chevette. He told me that when it broke down I had to fix it or bring it to him so he could teach me to fix it. I learned a LOT on that car. Now when my vehicles break down or need maintenance I do it myself and save a bundle. I want the same for my boy. Glad to be here. I'm already enjoying the benefits of this forum. chris
  16. I have someone offering me an EA71 with the side starter. Can I just swap the bell housing from the center starter on to the engine with the side starter?
  17. OK, I know this is a few years after the original post, but I have the same problem with my EA71. It is burned on the driver's side between the cylinders. Is there a fix for that? I assumed the block was toast, but some of the discussion in this forum makes me wonder if there's hope. Any suggestions?
  18. Is it possible to do this to put an EA81 in to replace an EA71 (centered starter)?
