I know this isn't the for sale section, so I'm sorry if this is out of line. I looked in those topics and didn't find anything so I thought I would at least try here once. I need a new EA81 in good running condition, hopefully with low-ish miles. I have cash, and I live in Portland. I could drive some distance to come pick it up if the price is right. If you, or anybody you know has one lying around I'd love to hear from you. Thanks a bunch. -Scotty

GOT IT!!! Thanks everybody. This one was really getting pretty frustrating. After new fuel pump, wires, plugs and ignition module, I was still without spark and fuel. Put in a new coil and ran a new wire from negative coil to dist just in case, even though the whole thing looked fine. That gave me fuel and spark! Then just a matter of cranking till I was back in action! So it's hard to say what it was since I changed the coil and negative wire at the same time, but the wire looked fine with good connections, so I'm thinking it was actually the coil. Either way, now I have a new everything so I should be set for a while. Now I just need to have the motor rebuilt.

All my fuses in the fuse box and fuse-able links (that I know of) are all good. Are there others out of the ordinary that I should be looking for? Thanks a bunch for your, and everybody's insight. Let me know if I'm missing a fuse or something that I might not know about.

Wow. Thanks everybody for all the info. Kayoteq, sorry to hear that you feel my pain. Problem is that most people think its the ignition module, and sounds like that should definitely be it, considering the symptoms. I have replaced: plugs, wires, fuel pump, AND IGNITION MODULE. and still NO spark and NO fuel. I'm waiting for a new coil to be at the parts store this afternoon and I guess I'll try that next. I've checked all my wires and everything. I'm getting power where I should. If a new coil doesn't work, I'm just going to have to get it towed to SSI and let Rick do his magic.

I don't have a multi-meter with me either to test both sides of the coil. (that, along with most my other tools are in my wrecked truck that is having the frame pulled out right now). Not having the best luck with my automobiles lately. So if the coil does NOT pulse when cranking, does that mean the coil is bad? or is it not grounding out in the distributer? I could buy a new hitachi coil for $40 to try it, but I can't return it then if it's not the problem. I could get a cheapo for $22. But again, I don't mind spending that either way if its really the problem. Is there a way to test all this without buying a new one? Thanks again. I just don't know where to go from here.

Both sides I the coil stay lit when cranking. What's that mean? Sorry I just don't know enough about these to know what that tells me.

Sorry forgot to add: 85 brat, EA81, Weber, and a ton of miles

Sorry to start a new post when I know there is a bunch of info on here about this kind of stuff, but I just couldn't find anything for this exact situation. I'll try to keep it short. I'm not getting power to the fuel pump, and therefore no fuel. No spark if I hold a plug to metal either. I have new wires and power on both sides of coil, BUT a tester light does NOT pulse when cranking engine. Does this mean the coil is bad? Could this mean something else? Thanks a bunch for any help. This issue is making me

Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Forgot to add that the FPCU I got looked exactly like mine. I think it was an 86 with an EA81. I actually just took the circuit board out and put it in my plastic housing. the circuit board looked the same as mine anyway so I'm pretty sure it's the right one. -
Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The tach just has a little bump right as i first begin to crank it, but then as I keep cranking it it just lays flat. I'm not sure what is normal though. Maybe you can help me out with that. If that's the issue. what is next? coil? Also, I should mention that at this point the battery is barely cranking it. It's been cold and hasn't started in a week now but I keep cranking it to check other things. I don't know how much that would effect how much the tach moves at this point. It's time to have it jumped for any more testing I think. Thanks again, let me know what you think. -
Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah I've checked most of that stuff. Is there another relay that would effect the fuel pump OTHER than the FPCU? and is there a fuse specific for the fuel pump other than in the fuse box? This is what I've checked: No blown fuses, FPCU is good, and fuel pump is good. Thanks for the reply's -
Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, I tried a different FPCU form a junkyard and still the same thing. I'm (sorta) ruling that out now, as well as the fuel pump itself. Any other ideas of what could be going on? It hasn't had any fuel or starting problems at all. Just didn't start one day. No fuel at the inline filter/vapor separator under the hood. No power with a light tester at the connection by the fuel pump back by the tank. (all tested while cranking engine.) Any ideas? Thanks a bunch -
Sorry to start another post about something that already had a post going, but I couldn't get an answer for this specifically. How can I tell if a fuel pump control unit is bad? How do I test it? I'm not getting power to my fuel pump all of a sudden and I've been told that it could be the FPCU. How do I tell if its toast or not? Or if this might be something else causing this, please feel free to chime in. Thanks a bunch.

Does anybody know how to tell if this fuel pump control unit is bad or not? Thanks -
Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Perfect thanks. I have the 6 wire black box as well it looks like. So, how to tell if it's bad or not? numbering the posts 1 through 6, left to right, top to bottom: With the key in the on position I get (with a test light) light on 2,4,and 5. When I crank it, 3 flickers a couple times. that's it. nothing out of 1 or 6. Sorry for the lousy explanation. If you follow that at all, let me know what you think. I'm guessing its bad. Thanks again. Sorry for all the questions on such a basic operation. -
Fuel pump not getting power
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Awesome, thanks. That is exactly the info that I need. Yeah, I had someone cranking the engine when I was checking everything. Is that something that goes out often? Is it kind of its own fuse or something? Roughy how big is it (to know exactly what I'm looking for). Thanks again. I really appreciate it. -
Hi there, I have a question about the wiring to the fuel pump on an 85 Brat with an EA81, carburated. It just didn't start one day and I THINK I've traced it to lack of power to the fuel pump. The Pump should be good. I tried putting another pump in and still wasn't getting fuel to the secondary filter under the hood. So I'm thinking it just isn't getting power. With a tester light, I'm not getting anything at the wiring connection at the pump, so I assume the only issue is it's just not getting power. I have no idea where the wiring goes for the fuel pump. No other electrical issues that I've noticed, so I assume it is isolated to the fuel pump wiring only, but I don't know that for sure. What and where can I check wiring, fuses, anything? Thanks a bunch.

Weber carb secondary not opening
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ferox, thanks for the reply. I have cleaned it a couple times over 4 years or so. Is it common for those to go out in just a few years? I'll take a look and see if that's it. Thanks again for the reply. Let me know if there is anything else you think it could be too. -
I have an EA81 with a weber carb that I put on it years ago. It worked great for a long time. It even has a 5sp tranny now and worked great after that instal, but now the secondary doesn't open up, so it has zero power on hills. It's fine in stop and go traffic around town, just won't go when you need a bit more power. I don't think it is sticking. I can open easily with my hand. I put a new pulley on it to the cable pull (I think) is correct now. what else could it be? Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

I have an 85 brat, with the original four bolt wheels. The rims are old and they have a fair bit of rust on them. I tried wire wheeling them down but the tires still aren't fully seating on a couple of the rims. Does anybody have an old set of wheels they don't want any more, or know of anyplace that I should be looking for some new ones? I don't care what they look like, I just need to get something working soon, and hopefully without spending a ton of money on it. Also, I don't think I want to change the size or drill out other rims, cause I have tires already that still have some life left in them, unless I could get some of those older, smaller tacoma rims for free or something. Any ideas, tips, or leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch. -scotty

Heater blower motor odd symptoms
bratlife replied to bratlife's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. Well the only new motor I could find at the local parts stores was from napa. Everything I feel like I've ever gotten from them is total crap and before I cut the wires to fit the one from napa I was hoping somebody might have some more knowlage about these than me. How are the napa motors? Any experience with them? I don't wanna put a $50 hunk of crap in there that I'm just gonna have to replace again in a few months. Thanks a bunch for all your help. -
I have an EA81 85 brat and the heater blower stopped working. So I took it out but left everything hooked up to it still so I could check the ground connection and make sure I wasn't just getting a loose connection somewhere. What I found out was that if I turned it upside down it worked fine, and then when I oriented it in the way it would bolt back in, it sputtered and stopped turning the little fan in there. I redid this experiment over and over again to make sure I wasn't just pulling or pushing a wire somewhere that had a bad connection. It just matters which side is up. Does this just mean the motor is out? Is this a normal thing for when the motor starts going out or does this just sound completely ridiculous? I would much appreciate any insight into this. I need to get this fixed asap, my feet are getting very cold. Thanks a lot.

well I finally got it to budge. It was pretty silly what I had to do, but it worked. I can twist it back and forth a little turn each way, but it is still really hard to twist it. It takes quite a bit of force to move it. I moved it back and forth for about ten minutes strait and nothing has changed though. its not getting any looser at all. I guess i'll just keep doing this unless somebody knows some sort of trick to this. thanks for all the replys.

well, I put the oil filter back on, tightened in down, and tried to turn the oil pump clockwise. It stripped the threads right out of the filter. The pump didn't even budge. I'm not sure what else to do here, anybody have any other ideas?

thanks, good idea. I'll go try that right now.
