  1. Aaahhhh, I gotcha. I only ran new wires to the front speakers. I got lazy and didn't run them to the rear, because I didn't think it was absolutely necessary. So I'll try that and see if that helps. Thanks.
  2. That link appears to be broken, but a wiring diagram would definately help.
  3. So what your saying is the negative wires from the two rear speakers shouldn't tie into the aftermarket stereo harness.
  4. Car: 1986 GL Wagon I've been experiencing some weird electrical problems lately. To the best of my memory they started when I installed my after-market stereo, but don't quote me on that. It started as a battery drain. I would come out to start my car in the morning and the voltage was too low to turn it over. I had to charge it up enough to get it started, then the alternator would take over from there. I tried several things to fix it then I unplugged the electric radiator fan and viola, no more battery drain. Another problem was my radio not turning off with the car. The radio would stay on with the key off and even out of the ignition. So I pulled it out of the console and got my digital multi-meter and found that the accessory wire carries voltage regaurdless of whether the key was on. Some other symptoms are: 1: Horn, mirrors, and windshield wipers/sprayers work with key off. 2: Windows go up and down with the key in the ON POSITION only. I tried better grounding from battery negative to the chassis.
  5. Well, I went out today and it wouldn't turn over at all. Yesterday it started about 8 times in a row. I thought I had it fixed by cleaning the cables. I put it a new negative battery cable and still no go. I guess i'll have to run that push button setup.
  6. That pushbutton setup sounds pretty neat. Is there detailed instructions on how to do that?
  7. I cleaned all the connections with sand paper. It seems to be helping. I've already started it at least 10 times in a row and it fired right up. Just to be on the safe side i'm gunna put some new battery cables on it because they seem pretty corroded.
  8. I'll try watching the lights to see if they dim. How do I measure the voltage to the solenoid. I'm not quite sure what that is to be honest or where its located.
  9. I've been having this problem for a while and I'm worried one day it'll get me stranded somewhere. When I turn the key to start nothing happens. I hear a loud CLICK from under the hood and thats it. It won't even turn over. I have to turn the key on and off what seems like 2 or 3 dozen times before it'll start. One thing I've been doing to help is open up the hood and turn the motor over by hand to get it off the compression hump. This helps a little bit but lately it doesn't seem to. I have a new battery, new alternator, and a newish starter from my parts car. I've also tried to clean up the wires at the battery terminal. Next I'll try replacing the starter cables entirely. Any advice if that doesn't help?
  10. Don't take this the wrong way, but you'd be better off using insolation-free butt connectors and not the twist-on types. Watch this:
  11. I guess I'll be running all new speaker wires then. I was hoping I only had to do the front ones though. While were on the subject of sound. How big of speakers could I put in this beast? Will 6.5" fit? I'm using insolation-less butt connectors with heat shrink tubing. I can solder I just don't feel like it.
  12. Its an aftermarket stereo. I've already got the dash kit and everything, i'm just a bit confused on the wiring. Behind the radio theres a really thick black wire, I assume this is the antenna. Is that correct? I have the color index for each wire on the new radio and I came across one for the harness in the car but can't find it now. When I use the search function sometimes I get a "database error" other times only a few results show up. I don't know if its a problem with my browser or what. My question now is why there is two blue wires coming out of the pink plug on the front passenger side? Should I just tie those into one wire then run it up to the stereo?
  13. I know this subject has been brought up on this forum 100's of times before, but theres still some questions I haven been able to find the answer to. 1. I'm having trouble understanding exactly what the issue is with the common ground setup. From what I understand the Right front/back and Left front/back each have their own circuit. Are they in series or parallel? Is there a diagram I could look at? 2. I've read that I need to run new speaker wires from the front speakers on each side up to the radio harness. Where and how do I tie this into the harness? 3. On the front passenger side one blue wire and one white wire goes into the pink connector and two blue and one white come out. Should I tie the two blue wires into one wire to run up to the radio? My car is an 86 GL wagon.
  14. The guy my dad bought the car off of was a Subaru Mechanic he said the transmission was totally shot, so I take his word for it. He had already rebuilt the engine and was probably going to rebuild or replace the tranny, but he must have lost interest or something. Hence why he got rid of the car. That being said, I didn't focus too hard on trying to fix that transmission and I've already removed the it from the car. I put brand new fluid in it before I took it out and it didn't help. When in drive, the car will not shift to 2nd or go into reverse even at redline, it just isn't there. It will go into and out of neutral and I think park did stop the car from moving.
  15. I'm real interested in that 4x4 3at tranny you have. If you could ship it to me I'll pay ya for it. My email is travisskeens@yahoo.com

  16. I'm definatly interested in that tranny. If you could ship it to me I'll pay ya for it:) The symptoms I'm having are that it won't shift out of 1st gear or go into reverse.
  17. It's automatic, I forgot to mention that. What do you mean by "generally no"? Can you be specific.
  18. I have an 86 GL wagon, 4WD that has a bad transmission. I've looked on Ebay and the only ones I could find are 2WD. So heres my questions: 1 Can I take the transfer case off the 4WD transmission and put it on the 2WD transmission? If not... 2 Could I convert the 4WD to 2WD?
  19. Yeah, I've already got one picked out. I just gotta go pick it up sometime. I really hit it lucky because it's the same car and same year with a manual transmission and a turbo:)
  20. Ok, so heres a little update. I checked the transmission fluid and it was almost empty. So I filled it up with fluid and it didn't help. Then I checked the vacuum line, there were no holes and it wasn't stopped up. So, I assume it's a bad transmission. Today, I removed the left front axle and will remove the right side as soon as I can. I'll then drop the transmission and replace it with a manual one along with everything else associated with the manual transmission.
  21. Thanks, that really helped. I'll keep you guys posted on how things are going.
  22. I recently totaled my 95' Legacy. I'm okay ,thankfully, but my subie went to car heaven. So I bought an 86' GL wagon off my dad for $200. The Car is in excellent condition with a newly rebuilt motor. However, it has transmission problems. It won't go in reverse or shift out of first gear(it's an automatic). So I went today to a junkyard to look for a new transmission. I found about 7-8 Subaru's that were all approximately the same year as mine. Some were automatic some were manual. So heres my questions: 1: Can I convert to manual? 2: If so, how hard would it be? 3: What models could I take the tranny out of and use in my 86 GL.
