I believe I have a head gasket issue but was curious if it is possible for the cylinder pressure to leak into the cooling system causing the lower radiator hose to burst(which it did)?. I watched a video where a guy just had the radiator cap off, fuel and spark disabled and when he turned the car over the fluid would bubble or blow right out of the radiator cap opening. Thanks

Just bought this car for a bit over salvage price. It appears it needs head gaskets- black tar in coolant reservoir. Tranny is slipping on steep grades or I'm assuming when accelerating hard. The car is in great shape - interior awesome and only 2 tiny spots of rust and not in the normal Subaru areas. I've changed motors on these before but not a tranny. Looking for advice on things to try on the tranny before I pull the motor. If needed, I will try to find a low mileage trans and do the head gaskets. Any feedback, advice, ideas, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just swapped out a 2.5 DOHC(99) for a 2.2 SOHC(95) Legacy. All went very well - no codes, runs good. I did notice that there is a loud air/high pitch frequency noise(hard to describe) coming from the air box. Not sure what it is - it has a brand new filter installed. Maybe something in the vent (inside fender) or an issue with the PCV? Thanks all - especially for the info on the engine swap. It went really well.

There is trans oil on the small engine plate below the motorand on the front of the trans. The rack has oil on it too, so it could be the rack leaking. I'm going to place something just below bell housing opening to see if is coming out there. It seems leak when I drive but not at idle. So if I need to replace the front seal, do I just remove the flex plate bolts and motor/trans housing bolts and slide the trans back and down? I'm assuming no messing around with the engine? Any place else that it could be leaking trans fluid from? Thanks

2.5 to 2.2 Swap

There is no stud on the motor for the second fastener. I suppose you could use an insert in the bell housing hole or are they just running another bolt from The inside of the housing? -

Did you have 2 bolt holes on the motor side for your starter? It will work, just one bold holding the starter which I'm not comfortable with. -
2.5 to 2.2 Swap

I thought I did my homework... but failed!! I bought a low mileage 1995 2.2 SOHC to swap for my 2.5 DOHC in my 1999 SUS and there is only 1 bolt hole for the starter on the 2.2 along with a couple other non-issues(less engine/trans bolt holes). It appears that I would have to put in a tranny that matches the year of the older motor. Any work around? -
EJ25 DOHC Engine

Will my a/c compressor, alt and ps bolt up to the hardware on 95 2.2? Are the brackets the same from a 95 2.2. 99 2.5 motor? thanks -
Actually, the bottom radiator hose/outlet had settled particles in them. I have been looking at threads that say to use citric acid (granular packets)mixed with hot water and dump it into the heater core hose and let it set for 15 or 20 minutes then flush it. Repeat as need until the water runs clear. Not sure how bad it would be to pull the little beasty. I have replaced heater cores on other vehicles and it its usually not fun. Thanks
