2002 Legacy 3.0 - HG test
I believe I have a head gasket issue but was curious if it is possible for the cylinder pressure to leak into the cooling system causing the lower radiator hose to burst(which it did)?. I watched a video where a guy just had the radiator cap off, fuel and spark disabled and when he turned the car over the fluid would bubble or blow right out of the radiator cap opening. Thanks

2002 Outback VDC - 3.0
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSorry, what I meant was if I do need a tranny, is mine a standard 4EAT and if there are other compatible ones. I didn't know if the VCD is a special 4EAT version? Thanks again.

2002 Outback VDC - 3.0
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds good. Is the tranny just a standard 4EAT? Just wondering since it is A VDC. If the above doesn't work then I will be shopping for a trans and was wondering what I could use or what is compatible. Thanks!

2002 Outback VDC - 3.0
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIt has a brand new radiator so anything is possible at this point. I'm in discovery mode on what is wrong with the car. The engine runs good and quiet, just the head gasket issue. I checked the level cold and it looks overfilled. Thanks all for the quick responses - awesome board!

2002 Outback VDC - 3.0
Just bought this car for a bit over salvage price. It appears it needs head gaskets- black tar in coolant reservoir. Tranny is slipping on steep grades or I'm assuming when accelerating hard. The car is in great shape - interior awesome and only 2 tiny spots of rust and not in the normal Subaru areas. I've changed motors on these before but not a tranny. Looking for advice on things to try on the tranny before I pull the motor. If needed, I will try to find a low mileage trans and do the head gaskets. Any feedback, advice, ideas, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

2002-2003 Forester 2.5 SOHC
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThanks for the info on the motor. Will the 2003 trans work as well in the 2002?

xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI'm assuming a 2.5 DOHC would not work in a 2.5 SOHC vehicle or would it??? Thanks

Will the heads and intake from a 2002 Forester 2.5 SOHC bolt up on a 1999 Legacy 2.5 DOHC block? Thanks

1999 Subaru Legacy Gas Tank Removal
Filled up the tank about 3/4 full and now the left side(drivers) is leaking from the top. Any tips for removing it without dropping exhaust and driveline? Thanks!

Air filter box noise
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWill check as mentioned - most likely me cheap Oreilly filter not sealing. Thanks!

Air filter box noise
Just swapped out a 2.5 DOHC(99) for a 2.2 SOHC(95) Legacy. All went very well - no codes, runs good. I did notice that there is a loud air/high pitch frequency noise(hard to describe) coming from the air box. Not sure what it is - it has a brand new filter installed. Maybe something in the vent (inside fender) or an issue with the PCV? Thanks all - especially for the info on the engine swap. It went really well.

Engine Splash Guard
1999 Subaru SUS Limited 2.5 - Anyone have a part number for an under engine splash guard or isn't there one on this vehicle? I couldn't find one online and the local Subaru dealer couldn't find a part number either. Thanks!

Transmission Removal - 99 Legacy
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe engine has had a new metal separator plate installed, so hopefully it is not leaking. I think(hope) it is trans fluid.

Transmission Removal - 99 Legacy
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWhat ever it is it is leaking on the y-pipe just below the tranny. The tranny fluid is low. I did an engine swap and there was no sign of leakage in the bell housing. I have some detective work ahead to see if I can pinpoint the source.

Transmission Removal - 99 Legacy
There is trans oil on the small engine plate below the motorand on the front of the trans. The rack has oil on it too, so it could be the rack leaking. I'm going to place something just below bell housing opening to see if is coming out there. It seems leak when I drive but not at idle. So if I need to replace the front seal, do I just remove the flex plate bolts and motor/trans housing bolts and slide the trans back and down? I'm assuming no messing around with the engine? Any place else that it could be leaking trans fluid from? Thanks

99 Legacy 2.5 DOHC into a 2002 Legacy
Will a 99 2.5 DOHC work in a 2002 legacy with the same motor? Not sure if there are electronic or trans issues. I'm assuming the 2002 is non-EGR. Thanks!

2.5 to 2.2 Swap
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThere is no stud on the motor for the second fastener. I suppose you could use an insert in the bell housing hole or are they just running another bolt from The inside of the housing?

2.5 to 2.2 Swap
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDid you have 2 bolt holes on the motor side for your starter? It will work, just one bold holding the starter which I'm not comfortable with.

2.5 to 2.2 Swap
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI thought I did my homework... but failed!! I bought a low mileage 1995 2.2 SOHC to swap for my 2.5 DOHC in my 1999 SUS and there is only 1 bolt hole for the starter on the 2.2 along with a couple other non-issues(less engine/trans bolt holes). It appears that I would have to put in a tranny that matches the year of the older motor. Any work around?

Will my a/c compressor, alt and ps bolt up to the hardware on 95 2.2? Are the brackets the same between the two? Thanks

99 2.5 DOHC Timing Belt
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually, the bottom radiator hose/outlet had settled particles in them. I have been looking at threads that say to use citric acid (granular packets)mixed with hot water and dump it into the heater core hose and let it set for 15 or 20 minutes then flush it. Repeat as need until the water runs clear. Not sure how bad it would be to pull the little beasty. I have replaced heater cores on other vehicles and it its usually not fun. Thanks

99 2.5 DOHC Timing Belt
xyzb replied to xyzb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAny suggestions on what to put in the heater core to dissolve the junk and flush it out. I may shelve the motor and get another used one. I just hate to spend time on the heads, seals, timing belt kit on a questionable motor. Comments? Anyone have a motor they would like to sell? Thanks!
