  1. let me intrude and ask another noobish q... I saw in the subaru EA "performance" (lol i know) post (here) about replacing w/ a lower temp Tstat - to open it sooner. I'm not really chasing HP (i know better), but like it running cooler when possible. So to my point and Q - anyone know parts numbers for the 170 or 180* Tstat's? The relevant info from that site: Thanks!! rob
  2. Will do for sure. What years will the doors match up - regardless of auto/manual windows? Thanks! rob
  3. crap - sorry! That's great to know though, because the rest of the panel is nearly perfect. As for speakers - i happen to have the 6 3/4's already (project truck was getting two pair). Since i figure w/ 150w RMS going to them i don't need a rear pair in either truck/wagon I have sets for both now. Moneys already spent so basically free at this point. My brain is broken it seems - so much going on! Thanks for helping sort me out again! rob
  4. Mike - i'll check those out if i haven't been lurking there already... I got impatient and ordered one of the slim pioneer subs. I know the SI BM MK3's will show up eventually, but this way i can get some minor bump to the soobie. I'd like to reserver them for hte FJ60 ideally, but may end up swapping back and forth at least to compare. Should be no comparison though. I think biggest improvement will be just getting decent speakers in it. And a new HU, and new wires, and and and... hehehe. anyway - i'll make sure and post up progress. On topic - if anyone knows good door panels that are a swap in please let me know. Years that are compatible? Is it difficult to modify auto to fit my manual panels? Can you swap just the top vinyl somehow? alrighty... Nite! rob
  5. Congrats! I just got a 88 DL wagon in a similar fashion (old person - low miles). She's a keeper (wife... well both actually)! What are your plans with your wagon? rob
  6. OH, and as far as audio forums... I've been on SSA and DIYMA on and off. Mostly lurking and soaking up info, reviews on this and that, etc. Avoid most of the other ones since they just end up being a bunch of trash talking kids. IMO.
  7. hehehe - i'm just a gadget geek... so not necessarily mr audiophile. Though they should sound SWEET from everything i've heard. Hey - i even stumped the local audio installer guy who's been doing it since i was born. SI is a cool little shop, it's a bummer they can't sort out production delays. Seems like every time it's delay...delay...delay. At least reading up on old sub releases it was same deal. Nick's a good guy and we've chatted at length about random stereo crap (helping me figure out what i want to do). THe pre-order is on hold until he catches up, which kinda sucks because I think a .5 cu box would be perfect in the back w/o taking up valuable dog/hauling space. At this point i'm tempted to do some if not all of the install myself and save $ for another BM mk3... hmm... You are absolutely welcome to hook up and give it a listen when it's all done! Be great to meet another soobie guy. My main delay right now is finding good panels to do the install for both front doors. What years are the doors themselves the same? Can i easily use auto doors for my crank/manual doors? Maybe just swap in the nice vinyl top from a pair that's otherwise beat up? I'm looking 85-89 right now as that seems to be the range I'm 95% positive everything should fit. I'm going back and forth trying to decide if i want to dynamat (i have some second skin extras) the doors before I install... dammit... this is supposed to be the cheap car! My 60 is a bit over the top (still in process). Anyway - thanks man! hopefully we can hook up sometime over a beer. Would like to see some folks setups. rob
  8. Thanks man! That's what i was thinking of doing - at least those 3 (oil pressure, volts, temp (coolant or oil?)) The only other thing i wanted to do was get a tach to see where my RPMs are at. Appreciate the pics - did you go electric or mechanical? rob
  9. Thanks for the link! I tried PM'ing Scooby, but his box is full... If anyone has another way to reach them please let me know. email? Phone? A real bummer to see a soobie specific place close down. rob
  10. Hey guys - i've called Aarons a couple times and went by this last weekend - no reply and nobody was there on Sat. Website says open 10-4 or some such, but door locked... Are they still open? They are just over from my house which would be cool, but if i need to go to PNP up in Lynnwood i guess i will. I'm looking for Door Panels, intermittent wiper column assembly and relay, and misc parts for rear security curtain install for my 88 DL. On a side note - hit 11,111 miles last night going to help a buddy out at like 1am on the freeway. I've put just short of 250 miles on the soobie since it's been resurrected from the lichen! Thanks for any info on Aarons or other parts places around here! rob
  11. Sounds nice! Could you post up pics and more info on your gauges and setup? I'm thinking of doing the same on my 88 DL, but surprisingly there isn't a lot of detail. Most everyone seems to recommend it, but not many write-ups on their install. Post pics of your GL as well - love to see what 29's would look like on one! (crap my landcruiser has 33's which is a nice step up from stock - though i aspire to 35's!) GL! rob
  12. You're right. I bought the hi/low set x2. so all 4 from two sets. The autopal ebay store had them in lows or highs as sets, this was just both (1 of ea). Here's a link to the ones i got. I got the "crystal" sets for a purpose. May look a little out of place on an 80's wagon, but the HID's are not very directional, so this *should* help prevent a lot of the light bleed. They have that inside cap dealio which should block the forward projection from the bulb, limiting it back into the reflector. I'll let you guys know when i get them and pics of how they look. Maybe a bit "fast and furious" looking, but if the pattern and brightness is there - i don't particularly care. :-\ rob
  13. thanks guys. I ordered the AutoPal ones like Jacob - just too much for the DS Cibies... I also ordered the h4 adapters - i'm not going to mess with rewiring if i can help it. I took some crummy cell phone pics of low's and high's last night when i got home. I'll try to take better ones from the same location to compare (with my nice camera). The kit i got has both low and high lenses - basically all 4 for the price of one Cibie lens. Honestly I think i may have gone a bit off the deep end (i do that sometimes)... I also ordered the same HID kit i got on my Buell - 55w goodness. I'd like to have pics of stock, h4 w/ ecode lenses, and HID w/ ecode lenses. Should be entertaining. The advantage of HID (besides more output) i think will be also getting power from the battery like doing the relay wiring. I'll keep this updated of course. Hopefully will be helpful to the next noobie. rob
  14. Not a typo. Yep - Basically! I guess the old man who bought it got sick/hospice - neighbor drove it every several weeks around the block. daughter got it when he died... then left it to sit since 07. only a nick on the bumper, some cracked vinyl on right side top of door panels. Total score for me - my new CAV (commuter assault vehicle). Runs and looks like new minus some faded bits, and lichen corrosion spots on paint. It was totally covered/green when we found it. Edit: A late night run to help out a buddy from work... kicked over 11,111! was trying to grab a pic while on freeway (don't do this at home) at almost 1am so no traffic... missed 11,111.1
  15. Cool. I did some more digging and found some useful info on the h4656 vs h4666 bulbs: From a forum guy called G-Man on bobistheoilguy forum (i have no idea...) - regardless it seems to help sort it out for me. That and Osram/Sylvania bulb guide confirmed my 88 DL uses h4656 bulbs. So... this sorts out which is what, and which i will need. A bonus here is that I know i have two 35w hi/low's vs two 60/55 hi/low's. So simply going to the h4's will be a big increase in light output. Paired with a decent lens/reflector (i'm going e-code i hope) should give a really nice pattern for all that extra output! I will take some pics before i do any swaps (be a while w/ shipping anyway). I'll definitely update this thread so someone else can find it later. Thanks guys! rob
  16. Dammit... twice... i'm typing slow today it looks like!
  17. Thanks Jacob! I was typing slow i guess... I'm looking at some of the AutoPal lenses on ebay - do you have any pics of yours installed? Any comparison shots vs stock? I'd love the Cibie's, but damn they are $$$. Seems a bit ridiculous to spend $200+ on lenses for this wagon. so i'll definitely need an adapter to use h4's w/ stock plug right? I'll see if i can find ones that aren't $15 ea. I appreciate the help and info! rob
  18. I pinged Renob123 to see what he says and any suggestions he has since he's done this already. I'm looking at some fleabay lenses w/ h4 and h1 bulbs (low/hi h4, hi h1) - can you help me clarify the connector type on the stock sealed bulbs? Hi/Low's - h4666 or h4656? Hi's - h4651? Is that correct? thx! rob
  19. Thanks man - so you are running the silverstar sealed beams as upgrades vs stock? That's my fallback plan i think. I ran silverstars previously in my cruiser. Much better than stock, BUT honestly nowhere near the output of the upgraded h4's (i ran just slightly higher wattage bulbs to be fair). output aside (though obviously important) - my biggest improvement seemed to come from the better light pattern. Found an old pic when i compared the Cibie's with non silverstar stock bulb: The pattern is much more flat and wider overall, plus has a defined cutoff at the top. The small "kick" up and to the right also seemed to be nice for the right side w/o blinding folks oncoming. I'm hoping to have similar luck w/ some equivalent square e-code lenses for the 88 DL - think that's doable or am i dreaming? Thanks guys! rob
  20. Thanks GD! Mine is an 88. I'll make sure and post that next time. I'll do some searches for renob123's posts to see if he put it online somewhere i haven't looked yet. Then if i that doesn't turn up anything, i'll PM him and post it up for the next DL owner's info. so pinout means it's not a H4 plug right? See i'm a total noob... just got it licensed yesterday after work and didn't think to throw the brights on to see if they were hi/lo or just low w/ high's in the center bulbs... :-\ Drove it to Alki for volleyball and then rode the bike into work today. h4's it is - i'll keep digging for more info. Thanks!!!
  21. I'm new... I'm posting up a bunch of questions (typically after also searching) - so first off - thanks for all the help!!! I really like the 4 headlights on the DL, but have run upgraded lenses/bulbs on my landcruisers for years and it's one of my "must have" upgrades. That should be able to apply to the DL... i think. I know I have the 165mm x 100mm or 6.5" x 4" lenses (stock = sealed). Correct so far? Daniel Stern has some 165x100 Cibie's (have the round cibies in my 60 = ). I really like the e-code light pattern (flat horizontal cutoff and good side coverage), but again am unsure if it applies. So to get to the point: The 6.5" x 4" lenses should be a swap in w/o issue right? Not seeing much besides Daniel Stern that are 165x100. h4 or h1 swap? I currently have just outside low, inside high right? So no need for dual filament h4? I've found some on fleabay (link) that are still $, but not like $$$ @ Daniel Stern. Where i really start to get lost is the different bulbs... the kit above has some adapter for 9007's, where DS has h4/h1's. Though mine are sealed - is the plug the same/compatible w/ h4 or h1? or 9007? I'm reading up on the relay "upgrade", but am pretty sure just new lens/bulbs would probably help a lot. OK - i'll quit rambling. I would like to swap/upgrade my lows for daily driving, without too much trouble. I *can* save $$ for DS's cibies which i'm pretty sure would be nice, or maybe something similar to the ebay ones? h1 vs 9007? Someone out there will know - thanks for the help! rob
  22. New to me 1988 DL - 11,05x miles just licensed it yesterday! Runs like new (practically is...)
  23. Thanks guys! I'd like to go original, but definitely don't want to swap the entire dash to get it. So - what guages do you run and where do you put them? Definitely want tach, guessing oil pressure, volts, temp? Anything else? Appreciate any pics to help me figure out where and what. rob
  24. thread revival... sorry. anyone find an aftermarket one you can mount up like those BCS f1/f2 from a few years back? Any stock'ish options for pop out holders?
  25. I just got my new 88 DL - and would really like to add the more informative guages from a Loyale or GL. Specifically I'd like to get a tach again. The volts guage would be nice. (better than just gas and temp i got now). Thanks for helping me sort it out! I've got a passenger mirror on it's way, and looking for the rear security curtain. Thx! rob
