  1. My brat has 2 headlights- one on each side and a center light under a flip up door in the middle of the grill. t-tops, sliding back glass, dual range 4wd, air conditioning (the guy said he had that installed by the dealer about a year after he bought the brat)
  2. Thanks for the help!! I was wrong about the 5 speed. I looked at it again and it is a 4 speed trans. It also has t-tops.
  3. This is my first brat and I need a little help. What is the difference in a brat DL and a brat GL. I do not see any badges or decals on the little brat. Also, how do I figure out what size engine is in it. It is a 5 speed with high and low range 4 wheel drive. Also, the hood is bashed in, What other vintage soobies would have the same hood? Thank
  4. another question--- You typed "if the belt broke". I pulled the cover off, behind the overflow tank on the battery side of the car and the belt seems fine (old and needing to be replaced, but still intact and tight). So, are you thinking that the belt could still be broken, even though it looks fine?
  5. do I need to cover the entire area of the tailpipe for this paper test? I think the starting sound is rur, rur, rur, rur. I will double check when I do the paper test.
  6. I also hooked the jumper cables from the running car directly to the suby's starter. That did not seem to change anything either.
  7. OK, starter tested good at Auto-Zone I picked up a new positive power cable while I was there. Put starter and new cable on - no change- still cranking over slow. I then tested the voltage at the starter while attempting to start the car. (this is with another car jumpered to the suby also). 13+ volts before turning the key, down to 9 1/2 volts during cranking????? What next?????
  8. OK, here is a update. I load tested the battery- tested good. I unhooked the positive cable at the starter and tested the voltage- it has 12 volts at the starter. I tried starting the car again with another car jumped to it- still turns over slow and the dash lights dim. I watched the tach while trying to start the car and it does not move? I moved from park to neutral while trying to start- no change. I pulled the timing belt cover off, behind the overflow tank, near the battery- belt is on, but looks like it should be replaced. I have removed the starter and will take it to be tested tomorrow. Any other thoughts???
  9. I will check the starter today. Mine is a automatic, so I am stuck for now.
  10. last timing belt change was at about 150000 miles, so I am sure I am overdue on that. I will check voltage at starter and repost later, trying to round up tools to go back and work on car at other persons house. The starter just seems to be turning the engine over slow, like it is loaded or something. Not really sure- this suby has been super reliable, never had this type of problem before???? It has a hair less than a 1/4 tank of gas. I have not tested for any air/fuel problems yet.
  11. car has been running fine, drove it this morning to drop kids off, (45 minute drive), shut car off for 20 minutes, went back out to car to leave and it will not start. It is trying to turn over, but seems very slow. Hooked another car to it via jumper cables, no change. Still turns over slow and will not start. Never had this problem before. Suby has 275000 miles on it. No repairs have been made to the car recently. Positive cable had some corrosion on it, cleaned it all off- still nothing. please help
  12. Thanks for all the info. Got the pm from ruparts- deal in progress:banana: thanks!
  13. Are there no aftermarket supply places that sell older suby parts?????
  14. Need more help! I have called all the local junk yards here in Virginia. Nobody has any suby parts. Is there a aftermarket website that would have lights/signals/accessories for older subys?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  15. I have a 85 GL-10. I have a broken marker light/turn signal on the drivers side. I do not have a spare parts car and I cannot find this item at any of my local junk yards. Will another suby model car have the same light to bolt up? It is almost time for inspection! Is there a online parts house that has older model lights for suby's?
  16. so the gear on the end of the governor is fixed and is not supposed to turn on the end of the shaft?
  17. 3AT trans governor question- should the gear on the end of the governor assembly turn or does the whole assembly spin under the domed cover all the time? If I hold the plunger end of the assembly---I cannot turn the gear. Is this the way it should be or is something screwed up inside?
  18. OK, I have pulled the governor and the gear looks good, all teeth seem sharp with no signs of major wear. I took the clips/snap rings off and pulled the plunger out (it seemed to be hanging-but not sure since this is the first one I have taken apart). There seems to be some shiney small flakes mixed in the atf. My question is: Should the gear on the end of the governor turn if you are holding the shaft? If so then it is stuck. It will not turn at all. I did not attempt to force it since I am not sure what it should be doing. But I would not think that the whole governor assembly should be spinning around under the domed housing? Please help.
  19. So, should I inspect/replace the governor gear and plan to replace the vaccum modulator also?
  20. Here is a update on the problem now that I have tested it a little more. The car will shift manually up through the gears and back down through the gears. Occasionally when up-shifting from 2nd to drive, it jumps into neutral and you have to take it back to 2nd and then back to drive again or you can bump it into the neutral position and back to drive and it will usually go into drive then. If you are in drive and up to speed and then slow down, the car will not shift down on its own, you must manually downshift to keep any sort of power. Maybe this extra info will help everyone diagnose my problems. Thanks in advance for all the help. I am so glad I found this forum, it is awesome!
  21. I recently bought a 85 GL-10 2wd. I am a newb on this model of subaru! The car has tons of miles (285,000 or so). The transmission will not upshift (automatic trans) Its like its hung in first??? The fluid looks fresh and to the correct level. It shifted ok for the last month that I have been driving it. Now all of the sudden it is acting up. Previous owner says he has never had a trans problem. Please help
