You can get new washers at a Subaru dealership for about $10ea. (cone and spring). The spring washer will be marked "OUT" with green marks on one side. If yours doesn't have these marks or is real old, it wouldn't hurt to get a new one at $10.

The Cardone part number for that car should be 60-7008. You can use that to cross-reference if needed. If the hub is stripped you should at least inspect the axle splines to make sure they didn't get worn down bad as well. I'm not sure if this is a common problem or not, but just to be on the safe side.

noise while accelerating?
I wasn't trying to hi-jack his thread with answers to my problems, simply asking if he's really sure it's not drivetrain related. If we're all trying to diagnose an engine problem when it's a drivetrain problem nothing would get accomplished.

Hesitating when cold
I don't know anything about the stock carbs (I have a Weber) but turn the choke down (lean) a bit. Sounds like you're running too rich and the choke is only on (for a rich mixture) when it's cold.

If you get the MOMO one working, I may buy your old one if you want to sell it (if it's stock).

noise while accelerating?
I have almost the exact same sound, though I think mine is drivetrain related. Does it change when you turn to one side or the other? I think mine may have to do with the axle shafts.

Just installed weber...
My bet is on the accelerator pump if you've tuned the idle mixture pretty well and you're jetted correctly. You may have a vacuum leak though. Be sure you don't cause that will really mess with the carb tuning.

It sounds like you have either too big or too small accelerator pump shot. I'm not sure exactly how the Webers work as far as tuning that, but I'm sure the manual explains it. I know on my Holley there are different size shooters and cams. From what you describe I would guess you're getting too much fuel from the accelerator pump. If the stumble is immediate then I would say you're getting too little fuel from the acc. pump.

As far as the hesitation, does it happen when you suddenly step on the gas? Does it hesitate immediately like it wants to die or does it take a second or two for it to hesitate? If you have vacuum leaks then they are probably causing a lean stumble on acceleration.
