  1. I know it is an old thread, but I want to thank everyone who helped me get stuff done on this thread and a few others. The project has gone as far as it can go.....used it for a back-up driver this summer and it is running okay...it needs someone else to take it to the next level though. I have posted it on the Subarus for sale portion of this site. Please take a look if anyone is interested in a car mostly done.

  2. Okay...my project is running....not well but running:banana:. There are some things I need to address.

Having a lot of movement with the engine. The motor mounts are not adequate and are not perfectly there. I have heard of shimming this??? Was wondering if anyone had any pictures of how this looks. Also is there another motor mount that could work?

There is a lot of lift in the front end when hardcore accelerating (laying serious rubber). Part of this is, the entire suspension is shot. Also the suspension is showing the 207k miles that the chassis has. I was wondering if I do replace the suspension all the way around, what should I put on there. It currently is not lifted and not slated for that until spring of next year and I just want to rod it around town for the next 6 months. So suggestions are welcome.

The clutch is adequate for now, but I will definitely need a new clutch soon. I have seen lots of "xt6" clutches and they range so far in price. What is the best economy/performance option for this?

In addition to this I of course had the front seal and oil pump seals go out in the first 20 mile trip. Of course these are a couple of the only seals I didn't replace when building the motor. Major lesson learned there, and now I know I can expect the rear main seal to blow soon too. Lesson learned....replace ALL seals while it is on an engine stand.

  3. My niece is having some issues with her suspension/steering column and is going to school in Vancouver BC. This is too far for us to come fix it. Does anyone know of or is a Subaru Mechanic that can take a look at her car and will be fair. She is a poor college student who just turned 21 and she needs a good break on finding someone that is quality. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  4. WooHoo:banana::banana::banana::banana:

Thanks GD for the advice. Rewired through the ECM....in the process found a broken wire and fixed it. Don't know which helped, but.......IT"S RUNNING!!!!!

In fact laid down rubber in 2nd gear. DANG!

Still have a bunch of stuff to clean up. The exhaust has a rattle that I need to correct. The suspension is toast and needs a sport suspension anyway. The brakes are a little squishy, but I have pads ready to go. But.....I think she is good to go! Thanks for the help everyone. I am sure I will have more questions, but for now I am reveling!...and revving!

Next up. Suspension and getting the 14" pugs powder coated and put on....and getting all the tools out of it.lol

  5. Got everything installed, and powered, ('92 EJ22 in an 85 GL-10) the engine will start and run for about 15 - 20 seconds and then dies. Throttle causes it to die quicker. I have the fuel pump relay powered directly off the ignition switch so the pump comes on and stays on in crank and run. I have checked all vacuum connections. Swapped out known good MAF, TPS, IAC, crank position sensor, tried 2 different ECU's and made sure that the ECU gets a start signal from the ign. switch, checked all grounds, and added some redundant grounds to be sure. I was able to keep it running for longer by spraying starting fluid into the air intake tube, but nothing else seems to be presenting itself as a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  6. I need a mechanic familiar with swaps.

Okay....so I don't want to end up one of the guys who didn't finish his swap. The buddy that was doing a swap with me has to move out of state and cannot help me anymore and it is nearly done, but it is still beyond my skill level.

The engine is in, along with the adapter plate and the engine side of the wiring compartment. It has even been started successfully. There are a bunch of loose ends though that need to be addressed. I have a list, but any mechanic would likely like to have a look at it for themselves. I do not have the deepest pockets, but have some dollars for this work. I cannot afford shop prices and any shop because of it being a bit of a frankenmotor would like not be interested in it anyway.

I am in the Portland OR area and could have you do the work at my house or yours. I have some tools, but my buddy took all of his and cannot leave them. He is a professional mechanic. I have some things I would be willing to trade for this project as partial payment, such as a 2 ton engine hoist, A low mileage ej22 with fresh bolts and gasket kit as well as some personal stuff. Email me if you are interested in this project and I will call you to discuss. This car is so close I would hate to have to sell it at this stage and join the hall of shame.

  7. Get some "pugs" aka Peugeot wheels. The recessed spoke alloys look incredible on these cars.

Since you said you had the suspension maxed out, Im assuming this either has a bumpy road to tackle, or youre going to find it some? If thats the case, many people do the re-drilled wheels as the spoke alloys, are well, alloys and youll damage them and for a 150-300 set of rims... thats no good.

You can find a set on here occasionally or someone in your area might be able to do it (if you have a Subaru master in the area). One thing to look out for... My friend had an 86 GL-10 sedan with re-drilled Chevy 6 lugs... 4 tire places we tried wouldnt touch the wheels. Said they could take them off, but not put them back on as "re-drilling wheels is a safety hazard" and blah blah blah. Ended up taking his car back to my house, removing all 4 tires (and slapping 13s onto a car with maxed suspension and cut fenders which looked hilarious  ) and taking the wheels back in for new tires.

I have a set of 6 pugs that are 14" that would work. I think I am deciding to not use them. If you are interested, you can PM me. Robert

  8. WooHoo....got the adapter plate and flywheel for the Swap....Thanks HighGuys! Okay....I guess its time to buy a fan now. What is the best reasonable price fan out there for this conversion? If anyone has a link to a good one I would appreciate it. Wish it was ready now....good wheelin weather is upon us!

  9. The frankenmotor brat had a genuine Subaru XT6 clutch plate and about 190 HP going into a standard 5 speed D/R and never had any issues. As i said you won't get a true XT6 plate unless you get it from the dealer. The aftermarket are just EA82 plates and they suck.

    GD

Yeah......gonna replace this one with true XT6 and spend the money. Just gotta wait until funds appear. Gonna go easy on the clutch til I can afford it. Thanks GD!

  10. if you drive it hard at all you will need that xt6 pressure plate. just because the discs are the same dont mean nothing. The regular plate is very weak and does not put nowhere near enough pressure on the disc. You will fry your clutch. IMHO.

An XT6 pressure plate is definitely on the list when this one wears out, we will replace both clutch and pressure plate. I have this project going on and trying to save money to convert my legacy to an H6 before the end of fall. So, saving money where I can in the short term, is what I got to do.

  11. Does anyone know of a Portland or surrounding area business to get an adapter kit for the EJ22 Swap. I need to get one this weekend. Been trying to buy one locally and having a hard time getting to talk to anyone about it. I see that SJR makes one, but they do not quote shipping on their site and 2-3 weeks turn around for the order is longer than I have to wait. I will drive as far as Eugene to get one. Please email me with a phone number or email address of anyone who produces these. Thanks

  12. use the clutch and flywheel for the trans you are using. the xt6 flywheel is lighter, and the PP is stronger, but ther than that, the disc is the same, and everything else fits any other ea82 the same

Thanks Miles for breaking it down for me.....probably just gonna go with the one I have got then....It has several thousand miles on it before needing to be replaced. I am already dumping way more money into this car than I intended.

  13. The only way you will get a *true* XT6 pressure plate is to buy it at the dealer. All the aftermarket one's are just EA82 clutch kits with the same pressure plate, etc (cross-reference the part numbers if you like - I already did). Unfortunately the OEM one's are about $160 for *just* the pressure plate.... but you can't beat them for holding power.

    GD

Thanks.....so it sounds like unless I really want to step up in costs....there is basically no difference. Really good to know. So if I go the cheap route....its all the same except for price. Right?

  14. okay I have hopefully made arrangements to get an adapter kit for the swap (waiting for info from Gloyale). It is being done to XT6 specs (recommended). Now with that said, what clutch kit do I need? What is the difference between XT and XT6. Any money I can save is good, but with all invested in the swap can't afford to not put in what is needed. Peoples opinions on the various clutch kits available.

  15. Hey thanks for the reply.....even though I would like to sell all this stuff, I am not sure he wants to do all this work and still end up with an EA82....with that said....Gloyale....when and how can I get a hold of you? I want one of the adapter kits. I will drive down to Corvallis anytime I need to to pick one up....was also wondering if you will drill the flywheel I have. I have a few questions too. Please email me robcor2@gmail.com. Thanks
