I'm in East Greenville (right next to Pennsburg), I can scout Harry's Pennsburg if you guys think you'll come down that far (about 1/2 hour south of Allentown). That last time I was there, there were not many Subarus and the ones that were there were Legacy and later.

got to agree with morgan... you can't go wrong with a 2.2 unless the previous owner buggered it up real bad (like mine)
Slightly off topic...Driving through Phoenixville, PA today, I saw a first gen legacy sedan with a big tall wing on the back (the kind where the supports look like they came out of an errector set) and a cherry bomb muffler sticking out of the back. At least there was no coffee can tip on the exhaust.
That said, gotta love the 2.2.

As I stated - I could be mistaken (but it looks like I'm not the only one). I stand corrected.
Thanks for the clarification.

This may have been mentioned, but are the final drive ratios the same? I remember someone saying that the autos were 3.9 and the manuals 3.7 or something like that (or am I mistaken - it wouldn't be the first time). The rear needs to match the front or you'll have issues.

Along the lines of the "digital" compression tester, take the spark plug out, crank to '0' and stick a screwdriver in the spark plug hole. If you feel the piston at the top, you've found TDC. If the screwdriver goes way in, either you're 180 out or you've got a hole in your number 1 piston.

...two people two towels and a sixpack of pabst.
Ahh, beer muscles. Brings me back to yanking the 20R out of an 80 Celica. I believe it was 40's of Miller, though:drunk:

Looks like fun.
Did the system come with hearing aid discount coupons as well? :-p

When I had my 87 GL, I had good luck with Perky's in Warminster. They are right on County Line Road, so if you run across the street, you're in Hatboro. The owner, Danny, was pretty adept at fixing much of the goofy things that I had wrong with it. They are not specifically Subaru oriented, but I've never had a problem with them. They have worked on my Subaru, Pontiac, Isuzu and Volkswagon, always with good results and a fair price.
Which part of Montco are you in? I used to live in Hatboro (southeast montgomery county) but now I'm in East Greenville (northwest Montgomery County).

Got me, then. Maybe a bad gasket or other leak near the oil filter that only shows up under high pressure? The shop guys say they let it run and saw no leaks, did they rev it up and keep it at high RPMs for a bit in order to see if/where it was leaking?
-
Definately sounds like a vacuum modulator. $15 bucks for the part at your local auto store.
-
You say it's coming out the bottom. Are you sure that it's not leaking from somewhere else and it's just collecting and dripping from the bottom? I had a leak near the top on an EA82 rocker cover and it acted like the leak was on the underside, because it just ran around the gap between the head and the cover and dripped from the lowest point.
Gravity, what a pain, huh?

I saw one at the South Mall in Allentown, PA this past Saturday (7/23/2005). It was straight, forest green (didn't look like the original color) and had PA classic tags on it. Didn't have my camera with me, otherwise I would have snapped a pic or two.
-
How far down in northeast PA are you coming? I'm probably closer to being southeast PA (near Allentown). If that helps, let me know and I'll give you my contact info.

You can also order them from Haynes directly

Although it's a bit pricy ($20.95 plus $5 shipping) plus tax if you are in TN or CA.

As another point of referrence, my 87 GL Sedan, 3AT, SPFI got 25 MPG no matter how hard I flogged it. I couldn't get lower than 25 MPG. I got 32 on the highway once. My average was in the 25 to 27 MPG range in mixed driving.

And here is a link to an article on how to replace the vacuum modulator

reminds me of that time my crap little loyale smoked a camaro z28:grin:
of course it was going uphill
on ice
and i was in 4wd
but it did happen
Nothing to be ashamed about. I still talk about how I beat William Reed in the 600 meters when we were both in high school. Of course, I wasn't a sprinter (5K man) and was thrown into that race at the last minute. He pulled a hammy and didn't finish. I came in last in my heat, but I still beat him:brow:
For those of you who don't know who William Reed is, he was a track stud who holds the High School record for the 400 meters (46.84).

Well, I cruised over to the Pennsburg location of Harry's U Pull It this weekend for a couple items for my dail driver. Subie-wise there was not much there. No EA81's at all, but there were,
2 or 3 Standard Imprezzas (read not outback or WRX verstions) - good interiors (minus air bag deployment) with front end damage
1 Legacy wagon - front end damage, interior prettly well stripped, rear body in excellent shape.
1 EA82 Wagon - 4wd auto (rear diff and front axels gone) - gray interior in pretty good shape - severe body damage to driver's side but good passenger side and rear pannels. Wagon is red.
No Peugot's at all (that I saw) but plenty of Honda's and Toyota's
Anybody need anything from the above vehicles? I'd be glad to go back on 6/26 and look for what you need (they are closed by the time I get off work on weekdays). It takes me less than 10 minutes to arrive there. If you need seats from any of these, they are on special this week at this location - $10 each.
Mods, please feel free to put this wherever you feel it's appropriate.

No, I'm not sure where Faust is. I live about 25 minutes south of Allentown (just moved in November) and I only go to church (and Dorney Park) up in Allentown, so I'm not too familiar with every part of the area yet. I do know that my township (Upper Hanover) houses one of Harry's U-Pull It locations (Pennsburg) - I haven't been over there yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I can be there in 5 minutesEver go over to Faust in Allentown?I'm curious if the Gen I brat is stilll in the back corner. Was camo painted, has solid fenders.....was a couple of years ago now.
Looking at the specials board for that location, this week is $10 seats and next week is $60 engines. I don't currently need seats or an engine for anything, but it's worth a looksy anyway.
On that note, there is a black EA82 4WD wagon sitting on one of my neighbor's lawns here. Looks like he parked it right around Christmas time - no tags on it and the grass is growing up around it also. Not sure what the story is, but I keep meaning to check it out. From the street, it looks pretty good - no major dents or rust visible.
-
I was at the K-mart on Tilgman Street in Allentown on Sunday and saw a pretty clean white EA81 4WD wagon with Washington plates on it and a black bra on the front. The folks getting into it were probably in their 60s (perhaps early 70s). Was that any of you guys?

My 87 is carbed... but my RA in college had an 87 with SPFI... I think in 87 it was something along the lines of
A: CA models were EFI and 49 state were carbed
or
B: Carbed first half of the year, then the 87.5 was SPFI...
My guess is A though.
My 87 4 door 2WD was SPFI, not a california model either. I had a friend that had an 87 GL wagon, DR 4WD with a carb. Both PA cars (although I think mine originated in NY).

I know how it happened, he neglected to keep the wheels pointing down
Body work aside (can they even fix that? I doubt it - you've got yourself a parts car now) I hope that you're OK.
Anyone Know what happened to ausubaru fourums
in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
