  1. Well, We have owned eight subarus, currently own an 87 gl wagon, and 85 sedan we're parting out, and I drive an 88 gl wagon. I am actually from Houston(AK). Sorry it took a while to reply, but we were gearing up for Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival, did you make it? It was a great one a bit dusty but the fireworks show Saturday night was the best I've seen Anywhere! NE way good to meet you! -lineofbirds
  2. We'll probably have our own section @ this group soon considering the astronomical rate of subarus/capita. Just wanted to see how many of you found your way here before me. soobeys ROCK in AK !!!
  3. Wow, I envy you guys a little... I grew up there. Graduated from Mt. Baker high in 1983, what a beautiful place! lived in Deming and Maple falls, as well as all over Whatcom County. post some pics would you for me when you get back? I fell in love with Subaru's about a mile past Bell's creek, up the old road to the left, just after the big left hand corner on Mt. Baker Hwy, and just before the north fork wayside on the right. (old memories flooding my mind...sorry) Have a GREAT time!!! & come see Alaska sometime, I love it even more.
  4. checked, double checked, and checked once more per your suggeston:) . new plugs and wires took care of the #1 cylinder problem. Set timing @ 20 degrees, and she starts right up, lots smoother idle now, much better running, but think she could use a fresh tank of gas. Heading to the station as soon as I get off line. Oh man, I've sure missed her! You wouldn't believe some of the rigs she's pulled out of mud holes, snowbanks and ditches! I've been told so many times "There's no way your little wagon's gonna get my truck outta here!" I just and say wanna bet? You people have all been so great! It sure is nice to know where to go to chat with other subie lovers. Thank you all again!
  5. Thank you everyone you have all been most helpful! Sorry it took a bit to get back to you all, It was a beautiful day so we had to get some time in out on the lake with the boats, (our season is pretty short, so we have to play when the weather lets us) To answer Q's; Yes, I did get a long block with same compression ratio, and it is single port fuel injected. Figured out today tho that she's not firing on the #1 cylinder, (no spark through #1 wire). New wires, plugs, cap, and rotor, before I can set the timing. Doesn't appear to be the wire itself as I tried another wire in it's place, to no avail. Of course everything's been sitting for a while. I'm sure she'll be on the road B4 next weekend, maybe she'll be in charge of pulling the boat down to the lake! I'll keep you all posted! Thank You again!
  6. Is that for Engine with electronic fuel injection, and overhead cam? Thank you so much for helping!
  7. I had the same sort of prob a few months ago w/my 88 gl wagon, then again in my daughter's '81 BMW320, and also in other Kid's 91 VW Fox, in all three cases it turned out to be tire wear. (new tires for everyone!) on mine it was bkoken cords. I could see the warp in the tire from the front of the car. Same thing on the BMW. We have some horrific potholes up here during break-up (spring thaw). Anyway, I also discovered worn ball joint on the side that had the front tire w/broken cords, and replaced both sides. Hopefully you won't have to go through that hassle.
  8. Just to give you a bit of confidence, I have replaced many timing belts myself, and even my daughters, ages 16, 17, and 19 can do the job themselves with the proper tools. - I even talked my oldest daughter's friend through the procedure over the phone. The girl had very little mechanical experience, but a lot of confidence, and had the car up and running in one afternoon. it's a piece of cake, You'll do fine.
  9. just finished engine swap in my '88 gl wagon, had to change out distributor, can someone tell me what the correct ignition timing should be? (my repair manual was accidentally destroyed recently)... Starts fine, running a little rougher than she used to. I really need my Baby running again. pulled the engine from '86 gl sedan, which, by the way I have available for parts, lots of good stuff left.
