  1. yup...my tire pressure is fine...putting all the tires at equal pressure helped a litte..but there are still issues thanks
  2. Hey everyone..thanks for taking the time to read this.. I have a 93 subaru legacy...Been real good to me..a little expensive at times...but I still love it..And now I am having more problems... My steering wheel doesnt feel right...Turning the wheel is weird...When I take a turn, as I turn the wheel, there is unusual resistance and the steering seems "floppy" (if that makes any sense) also, I notice when pulling out of a parking space..or pulling into one...I can turn my wheel either way and basically let go of the wheel and the car will not straighten out without me helping the steering wheel back...(as long as Im going less than 3mph or less...and from time to time, if i have my wheels are turned all the way and start to back out of a parking space it seem like my cars front end "shifts" slightly... i hope this makes sense to someone... thanks for any help! Chris
  3. Hey everyone...I havent had to post here in awhile because Ive been having good luck with my car...But now..the inevitable...I need to fix my strut assembly.. I know this for sure, because the stut is no longer attached to the car, and you can see the top of the strut poking through into the car (near the speaker) Probably not to safe to drive..but I have no choice... and to explain..I live in the middle of nowhere..all the roads around me for 20 miles are dirt roads..and I am not gentle on my wonderful subaru!! ok..to the point.. I need to fix that as soon as I can...I am in the process of getting a strut assemebly from the local junkyard...What I need to know..Is how to install it..From what I can see..it seems to be 2 lower nuts that need to be loosened, and the 3 nuts at the top of the mounting plate...Then replace strut, put throw 3 holes and tighten down...and then tighten 2 bolts at the bottom.?? Is it that easy...and if not...what else is involved! thanks for listening! and any advice would be great...Im going with the smoke a bone, undue a few bolts and see what happens theory! have a great day! Chris
  4. Hey everyone As nice as it is to see everyones post again, it could only mean one thing...My car is on its way to being on the side of the road some thursday morning on my way to work... So, I need to fix the problem..Hopefull, you guys can help me solve it... I was driving down the hellish road I live on the other day...Dirt road..potholes as big as dogs, and somedays, mud 8 inches deep...And the winter was torture on the car... ok..sorry...Im babbling.. While I was driving the other day...suddenly, I started to hear a swoosh swoosh sound that was coming from the passenger side of the car...sounded like the front but not sure..Up untl this...the only problems I had were a shaking when I would apply my brakes at a high speed... Oddly enough..now, when I brake, not only does the sound go away..but there is no shaking...and when I turn lefft the sound also goes away... I am to assume from what I have read that it is the wheel bearing.. Does that sound like a correct assesment? thanks...any other comments would be greatly appreciated Chris
  5. Hey everyone... It warmed up to almost 38 degrees today...so I decided to give my car another go...After almost 45 minutes of trying to start the car...It puttered enough to start running...Sounded and smelled like ************ for awhile...but at least its running...I filled the tank, added a little more dry gas, and a little bit of fuel injection cleaner....seems to be doing ok... But tomorrows another day...and it is supposed to be 10 degrees tonite..so Im hoping for the best!! thanks for all the help! Chris
  6. Oh...well, I guess that isnt the problem with my car not starting then... And I guess I've never heard it before because I never listened for it...It is an automatic...thanks..at least I know that isnt a problem..but now I guess I have to start somewhere else... thanks
  7. Hey everyone I read in another post that there is a "Fuel pump fuse" is that true..and if so, where do I find it in a 93 legacy? thanks Chris
  8. Hey...I discovered that the buzzing, humming sound I am hearing is coming from the area of the starter...I originally thought the starter was buzzing when I pushed the gas pedal...But I dont think that is possible..So I am figuring that it is another part that is in the area of the starter...and the sound is just traveling to the starter... I hope someone can help me on this..I have no idea what it could be Buzzing, humming sound when I push the gas pedal more than half way to the floor while the car is not running and the key is on...My car wont start..just turns over and over with an occasional putter...The sounds seems to be coming from the area of the starter on my 93 subaru legacy... please help!!! Chris
  9. hey, that would make it a little easier, I guess it is a 1993 subaru legacy 4x4 non turbo thanks
  10. Hey there... Was wondering if someone could help me identify a part in my car... All I can tell you for sure as of now is that is is cylinder shaped and has a nut fastened to the top of it with a rubber cover over it...it sits behind the multiport fuel injection system(near the firewall..) and I believe it has a few lines going to or from it... I will take a picture in the morning if I can and post it.. the reason I ask is that today when I tried to start my car and it didnt start, I noticed a "buzzing" type sound coming from that part...It only happens when I push the gas pedal more than 1/4 of the way to the floor...but a distinct buzzing, humming type sound starts...and I can not get my car to do anything but turn over and over and over and over and over... any help would be nice...maybe we can do this without a picture, otherwise Ill try to post one tomorrow... thanks Chris
  11. Hi everyone...thanks for all the help so far... It is now warmer out and the car wont start so I have decided that it is something more involved than just the cold weather... I noticed something new today...as I was hooking up the battery charger to the battery, I heard a slight buzzing, humming sound...I determined that it was coming from somewhere behind the multipoint fuel injector thingy...Not sure what it is...but I've never heard it before...very soft noise...anyone have any idea what that might be?!?! and also...now when I push the gas pedal..I can hear a buzzing type of sound coming from under the hood...I cant determine where it is coming from because I am alone...hope this helps figure out what is wrong thanks and I will get back to you with everything I try..thanks for the help!! Chris
  12. Hey...I tried a few times...but not for very long..I wasnt sure if it was something that I should do... At least a few times I let the engine turn over at least a minute or so...but never held the pedal to the floor for longer than that...I now have a dead battery, so I have to jump it... by the way, It is a 93 legacy...non turbo...160 thousand miles... and I have had no problems in a long time...My cam shaft sensor was replaced a few months ago..so Im wondering if it may be radiator thermal sensor(something like that)...if you know what I am talking about...Please let me know where I can find it in my car...I can start with replacing that... thanks Chris
  13. Hey there...its been awhile since Ive had to come onto this message board to ask for help...But as my life always goes...my car is giving me trouble... Let me explain... I was driving home from work last night..it was snowing like hell out...(normal stuff here in vermont)...but it was a wet snow...almost slushy...Fun driving now that Im in a subaru...But back to the point...A few minutes before I got home, my check engine light came on...I figured I'd finish the ride home and deal with it in the morning...(figuring it just needed oil or something simple like that)... Well...to add to the problems...Over night the temperture dropped almost 30 degrees and the wind chill made it about -50 degree F...causing all the slush on the bottom of my car to freeze solid... This morning, my day off, I was going to go enjoy some nice foot deep powder on the mountain I live near...only to find out that my car wouldnt start... I turned the key...the engine cranked, and kinda fired, but when I released the key, as I normally would, the car died...And I have now had to hook up jumper cables tto my car, and after trying on and off for a few hours, I have had no luck!! The engine cranks and cranks and occasionally throws a little putter...I thought maybe the engine was to cold...so earlier I put a heating pad on my engine to warm it up..but no luck...I figure it must be a sensor somewhere or maybe my fuel pump...But what Im wondering is if maybe it is becuase I have about a inch thick layer of frozen slush on the underside of my car... Any advice would be appreciated!! It is 20 degrees right now and my car has been in the sun all afternoon...I figure at this point if it had been cold, it would have started...There have been many days this winter where the temp was as cold if not colder, and I had no problem with my car starting... someone please help! Chris
  14. Hey... I could be your cv joint...I think if you climb under the car and look where the cv joint is...If it is shiny, it most likely needs to be replaced... other options.... Ball joint, or axel rods.... Lift the front of the car and try to shake the tire...if it shakes...it is most likely a ball joint or axel rod.. On my friends truck that same thing happened..it ended up being the power steering pulley... I dont know...Im just stoned and bored!! good luck!! Chris
  15. Hey there For what its worth...When I got my 93 legacy, it happened to be raining...and I discovered the common occurance of a leaking sunroof (mine is on the drivers side mainly...) After weeks of dealing with a wet rump roast...which sucks!! I grabbed a caulking gun and a tube of silicon...My sunroof only opened a bit, so I opened it as much as I could...put silicon all along the edges, and close the sunroof! Then with a sponge and warm water, you clean up the mess.... (for most effectiveness, obviously take off the sunroof shield...) but I havent had a problem since...other than not being able to open my sunroof...But Id rather deal with that than sitting in a puddle everytime I go somewhere... Chris! good luck!! I guess the option of fixing it it lengthy and expensive!! But a tube of caulk costs 5 bux!
  16. Hey....I am trying to replace the rear cat and the muffler assembly on my 1993 subaru legacy...4wd, non turbo....My friend has a 1989 subaru legacy, 4wd, but I am not sure if that exhaust will fit on my car... What I have read online says that it wont...it is a different engine and a different chasis...Does anyone know if I would be able to find a way to adapt it to my car? I would appreciate any input!! thank you! Chris..
  17. Thanks for the advice...no problems with emmisions in my state...So I am thinking Ill just try to get a pipe and do what you said... Silly question..what is a pipe expander..I assume it will help make the pipe ends fit together...(or am I incorrect?) I just hope I can figure out how to connect the new pipe to the front cat... hopefull Ill find out tomorrow! thanks Chris any other advice will still be appreciated, just in case I cant get this to work...
  18. Hey everyone!! I noticed the other day that my exhaust started to get loud..and at about that moment I hit a bump going around a corner and my exhaust seperated! It seems to have broken at the 2nd catalytic converter... My questions are as follows: The suburu exhaust system is 3 pieces? Front cat, rear cat and muffler.. Is that correct... And, the "regular" subaru 2nd cat's are more than 200 dollars...But I also cam across a "universal" one...for 60 dollars...As far as anyone knows..is it ok to use the universal one? I just have a hard time spending 200 dollars on a 3 foot piece of muffler... Or, can I bypass that 2nd cat..and just put a straight pipe in? I'm in Vermont, and there are no emmisions standards for cars here...They just make sure there are no leaks in the exhaust... any advice would be great...basically, I am looking for the cheapest way to replace the 2nd cat in my 1993 subaru Legacy, wagon, non turbo, 4x4.. and I dont have a welder, and I dont know how to use one! so welding is out of the question unless someone wants to take a trip to Vermont to help me! thanks for reading!! Chris
  19. Hey thanks, Ill give it a try tomorrow...thanks for the help!! I hope it helps! Chris
  20. I had no idea there was such a thing...Would I still be able to take the pads off and add the grease?? thanks! Chris
  21. Hey everyone... I replaced my front brakes to see if I could get rid of the chirping sound... The sound is still there, but is definately not as bad as it was... Idling my engine up or speeding up does not seem to make a difference in the sound....it happens around 45 mph most of the time, but has occurred at other speeds... How else would I be able to determine if it were the u joint?? any advice would be great, thanks!!! Chris
  22. Hey...I was driving home today and noticed a sound I hadnt heard before...It was weird...It happened when I would coast at any speed...A sound similar to what brakes would sound like when they are on their way out...But the sound would chirp in a repititious fashion...But the sound would stop when i applied the brakes...and would also stop when i turned the wheel, even a tiny bit...In park..I dont hear it..and stopped at a stop sign, in drive, i dont hear it... I know I have a few problems with the car that may be the cause...a/c compressor's bushings are gone, alternator is on its way out... And a few days ago I had my Water pump, timing belt, cam shaft pulley and harmonic balancer replaced...the day I got my car back, I had a small oil leak from what seemed to be the cam shaft...But after a day of driving it...the leak stopped, and none of my fluids are any lower...(Cool, I have a self fixing car!) (I wish) And today, i for some reason pumped my brake pedal when I was at a red light, and my idle got all screwy...Am i to assume that I have a vacuum leak?? any thoughts would be appreciated... thanks
  23. Hey guys...Ive been reading for hours now and although I have come across a butload of useful information, none of it has lead me in the right direction with respect to my car..so I figure I may as well leave a post and hope someone can help me.. I have a 93 Legacy Wagon I recently replaced my air filter, due to severe idle problems..Upon pulling the old air filter, I discovered a shredded and dirty air filter...After putting in a nice new one, everything was fine.. I decided to take a road trip to visit my parents 150 miles away and about 3/4 the way here, my "CHECK ENGINE" light came on...I pulled over and did as the car said...I checked the engine...(and to my non-mechanic eyes, I found nothing wrong), but did hear an interesting sound, which seemed to be coming from my WATERPUMP or TIMING BELT...I cant really describe the sound..Like a rattling...So I shut the engine off and made sure that everything was tight in that area..all seemed fine So, with no choice, I continued on my way, hoping for the best...When I got in the car and started it again..I had no problems at all... Today, after driving about 30 miles, the car sputtered a little and the check engine light came on again..This time I continued to drive it so I could see what happens to the car (sounds silly I know..) At around 2,000 RPM's my car would kick or sputter a little...So I pulled into a store, parked and waited a few minutes, then restarted the car, and all was fine... Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I was going to go to a dealership around here and have them plug their computer into the car to get a read out, but it is going to cost 60 dollars to do it...Im hoping I can solve the problem myself,(well with all of you too, of course) I also came across somewhere something about being able to cross 2 wires under the dash to get a LED readout of blinking lights or something...Anyone know if I can do that with a 93 subaru?!? thanks for listening!! hope you can help Chris, stranded in Mass, wanting to get back to Vermont!!!!
  24. Hey, I had the same problem for awhile and ended up changing my air filter...Solved the problem...May want to try checking it before you do anything else...easiest solution
