  1. Hello all,

'85 GL Wagon, 1.8 liter, carb. I have an exhaust bolt that has vibrated out twice now... in 19 years (with locktite). So I think I need to drill out and heli-coil the threads. Does anyone know the drill size, tap size, thread size, hole depth for the exhaust bolts?

I have a line on some heli-coils (maybe not that brand). And I have drill bits and metric taps. So I don't want to buy a kit.

One other thing, why is there one stud and one bolt on the exhaust? Is this for ease of installation? Has anyone just installed with 2 bolts?

  2. Thank you for your replies. GD, I will probably contact Philbin and UPS my disty to them for a rebuild. Then swap out alternator with my spare to see if the lights go off. Meanwhile, I'll look for the 90 amp Maxima alt.

Will I have to change pulleys on that alternator. ie., remove the pulley from existing Subaru, and then put that on the Maxima?

I found a 92-94 Nissan Maxima alt. at partsgeek.com. Part #A2889 for $107. Will that work?

Have you suspended the sentence on Blanco yet?

  3. Hello all,

    Subject: 1985 GL wagon 1.8 , weberized, 5mt, d/r 4wd.

Situation: The tach was bouncing between 2700 and 3300 rpm when the engine was running in that range. There was serious hesitation (hicups) at low rpms, but ran pretty good above 3500 rpm. So I swapped out coils and coil wire... no change. Then swapped out the disty... and it fixed the problem. However, when this problem started, I noticed a few dash lights coming on ever so dim. Specifically the EGR, the Charge and the Brake Fluid. The dash lights would go out when the engine was above 3000 rpm.

Questions: What is the best source for a new disty? New or Used? And what year/model of Subie uses the same disty?

Next... what's up with the dash lights? Is this related to the disty? Or maybe the alternator? And how do I check the output of my alternator (the volt guage reads about 13-14v).

Last... what is that condensor looking thing wired to the positive side of the coil and then going to engine block ground?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give me.

    Ron W.

  4. Hello all,

my 85 1.8l mpfi has the chocolate milk oil syndrone. I'm assuming the head gaskets are shot... any help would be appreciated. The car is front wheel drive and automatic transmission.

What are the steps to replacing the head gaskets? Where is a good source to buy the gasket set? Do I need to pull the engine? Is the mpfi going to be impossible?

I would really like to fix the car. It only has 86k original miles. The body and interior are in great shape. The car was owned by the World Whale Foundation.

Or... should I sell it to the highest bidder?

  5. Thanks for the replies. But here's the deal. I bought the car last week, and the top lid of the air flow meter (4"x4") is missing. There is a spring that looks like what is used on an outdoor thermometer (you know, the round ones that look like a sun). I don't see any adjustment screws, and am assuming that this is just reading the outside air temperature and making an adjustment to the amount of 'real' air flow.

The idle at startup is 2400rpm. Then it eventually goes down to 1200. In stop and go traffic, the idle fluctuates between 1200 and 1800.

Any ideas on where to start searching. I'll check for vaccum leaks tonight and the idle adjustment. Am still unclear on where the adjustment is located on the Air Flow unit.

My other '85 wagon has a Weber. But I couldn't pass this one up. Only 86,000 miles. PW, PDL, mpfi, digital dash, AC, Cruise Control. The original owner was the World Whale Foundation in Santa Cruz. They towed it behind their motorhome most of the time.

    Thanks for the help.
