  1. If this thread is still alive i have 1 more question. My 02 with the 2.5 is Cali emissions. Does the donor EJ22 Phase 2 have to come from a Cali emission car?
  2. Thanks a lot for the help... I really appreciate it. I have a few U-Pullit yards around me i frequent for parts. I am going to start hunting around and am going to get one. The 2.5 does not like me... lol... When i do it i will document and take pics. And will post when done. I know i wont be the last person to ask about this... Thanks again..
  3. Just a brief history as to why i may swap motors. I have owned many Subaru's over the years and did many extensive repairs. I like working on them because they are pretty easy if you ask me. So when i had the opportunity to by an 02 outback loaded up for $1200 and 300,000 miles on it i grabbed it assuming i would probably have to rebuild the motor. No big deal.. Well motor apart the bores looked good, they measured in spec. Crank as well. pistons were worn and rings as well. Head gasket was blown. It was eating oil. So i honed it our replaced pistons and rings and bearings with stock size. Milled the heads, re-seated the valves (surprisingly they looked very good for the miles) I put it all together and it was Zen, for 3000 miles. Not a drop of oil was missing from the car. Then all hell broke loose. It turns out when separating the motor it was a bit tough to get apart. so i was using a 3 lb. hammer and a block of wood. At one point i missed the wood and hit a glancing blow to the mount for the top idler pulley just before the belt goes back to the drive sprocket. My fault. So i filed down the damage as best i could thinking it was ok. Well it was not. It turns out it was not completely flat and it tipped the idler upward in the front by a couple degree's. enough to make it want ride up the side of the harmonic balancer. Which acted like sand paper and slowly wore the belt away until SNAP. So i took the heads off. all 16 valves were bent, No visible piston damage (belt broke at around 2000 rpm) so off to the shop with the heads to check for cracks, all was good. So new valves and head gaskets and start it up. Corrected my idler issue. And from the time i started it until now it sounds like i am getting a bearing knock. Rod bearing i am assuming. I am wondering if the collision with the valves didn't damage one or more of them. It is not that loud but if it gets worse and i believe it will then this motor will become scrap metal. Also I am now loosing oil again, I believe it is a cursed engine. At the very least a learning expeience.
  4. Thank you very much. I understand the phase 1 abd 2 motors and that i can't just grab any 2.2 out of the bone yard. Yes the 99 is a phase 2 EJ rngine. My problem may be finding one. I could always steal the one from my sisters car The Y pipe exhaust is a single port and it looks as simple as just moving the Y pipe with the motor. My concern and i may just have to burn that bridge when i get there is the flywheel and clutch. If you go to Rockauto and look up a flywheel for the 2.5 there is only 1 available and it's expensive. If you look up one for a 2.2 from "99" to "01" there are several listed and are only around $60 Not sure why there is a difference.
  5. I have a 2.5 i am considering making a project and would like to swap the 2.5 for a 2.2. I have found lots of info hear and thanks to all who contribute. Most of my questions were answered by poking around the site. My sister has a 99 legacy with a 2.2. I have them parked side by side and it looks like i can take the short block out of that car and drop it in mine. And hook all the externals (intake, alt, ps pump) from my 2.5 right up to it. Except the exhaust manifold. I would need the y pipe from the 2.2. Am I correct? Also my 02 is a standard, will i have any issue bolting my flywheel and tranny up to this? That is my main question. I am thinking i need a flywheel and clutch from a 2.2? Any help would be great. TIA
  6. It's been a while and I know there is a lot of knowledge in these forums so I figured I’d ask. I have a 93 Impreza, 310,000 miles. Well maintained and working great until today. I was on the highway (pouring rain) and it seemed to sputter like I had a fouled plug, it then would not rev past 4000 rpm, and then stalled out. I pulled over and tried starting it but it would just start/sputter at 1000 rpm then stall after a few seconds. I called for help and while it was on the way I kept trying. I opened the hood and checked the wires and electrical plugs that where accessible for a good connection. I thought maybe something got wet. It still would not start. I decided to try spraying the Mass Airflow Sensor with brake parts cleaner to see if it would help. After a couple tries it started and I drove it 60 miles home without a problem. The only code stored in the ECU was 24, the IACV. Could the idle air control valve cause something like this to happen? Or maybe water made its way through the air cleaner and got the MAS wet? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  7. I am planning on trying the band adjustment this week as soon as i find some time. I cleared the codes after the TPS install and VSS check. Like i said it still slipped, so i checked today to see if any codes were present and there were none. That would (at least i think) point to a mechanical problem like a band adjustment. And I tried to manually put the car in 3rd gear when it’s hung up and that does not work it will rev like it's in neutral untill you slow down to around 60 or under and then you can accelerate. Just like using your foot. Also if it’s any help it does it more when temp outside is cold. Even after warm-up. I guess what I’m trying to determine is if it is a Mechanical or Electrical problem like a bad sensor or TCU. Worse case I could get a Trans and swap it out but don’t want to do all that work and still have the same problem because it’s not in the Trans. Thanks for replying. And anymore help would be welcome.
  8. First I would like to thank all those who post here; I have 2 Subaru's and probably would have given up by now if not for the wealth of info you guys have posted here. My current problem is on ongoing battle, I have a 93 Impreza with a 4EAT Trans. It has been slipping now for about 45,000 miles. The slipping is a major annoyance at times. It occurs when I’m driving on the highway between 60 and 75 MPH, if I want to accelerate to pass and hit the gas the Trans comes out of gear and is for a lack of better terms is stuck between gears. If I let off the gas it will go back in high gear, if i let my speed go down to under 60 it will let me kick in passing gear and go. It only does this in the 60 to 75 range, if i keep my speed above 80 it works fine, hit the gas and it will downshift fine. (Easy way to get a ticket) I read the codes in the TCU and received a code 31, 32, and 33. I replaced the throttle body with a good TPS on it and that helped with some other problems i was having like a dead spot in the acceleration but it still slips. Also just checked the VSS 1 with an OHM meter and it was good. Checked the wiring harness and it also looked ok. This week I’m going to hit up the junkyard again and get a TCU unit just for the hell of it and see if it helps. I still have to test the VSS 2 in the dash but somehow i don't think that can be causing all my grief. And also basic stuff like Trans filter and fluid have been changed several times. When they are changed it seems to work ok for a few days and right back to its old tricks. Doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but annoying as hell. Can anyone who has knows what my problem is or has any ideas please help. Thank You all in advance.
  9. I would also like to find somewhere to buy one instead of the junkyard. I have a 93 Impreza with a TPS problem also. Just have to keep looking i guess.
