  1. I assume you are talking about drilling new holes in the rims and... You are talking about drilling new holes in the hubs. I have a set of steel rims. I figured I might give drilling the hubs a go since I have a drill press and considering some of the other things you've all mentioned. But I haven't really looked at every thing too hard yet. Thanks for the info. It all makes sense.
  2. When drilling either rims or hubs, I'm wondering what people are doing about the difference in bolt diameter. I got some 6-lug toyota wheels. The bolt hole diameter is larger than the stock soob wheels. Is it possible to get wider lug nuts for the stock stud size or is everyone drilling all of the holes out to a larger diameter than stock?
  3. Thanks so much for the info. That worked like a charm. And it was all so simple. That is, once I figured out that the wire colours in my repair manual were different from the actual wire colours. Reverse lights work and I was able to get it to turn over! That's the first time since I bought it last fall. Time to go get some gas.
  4. I have an '87 GL (Loyale) with an EA82 and it used to have an AT. I put a MT with Dual Range (from an '85) into it. I need help with the wiring. There are the 3 plugs for the AT: (Plug colour: wire colour + wire colour) Black: black + blue/red White: green/yellow + blue/yellow Yellowish: black + green/black And the 1 plug for the MT that later splits into 2 plugs One white plug: green + green/white + black + blue red The Green + Green/White wires go to a white plug on the MT (I assume this to be the back up light switch). The Black + Blue/Red wires go to a plug on the top of the very back of the MT and I'm not too sure what this is for (maybe 4wd indicator). What I need to know is, which wires from the AT wiring harness (coming from the car) do I connect to the 4 wires going to the MT? My repair manual only speaks of these plugs but doesn't give any specific details about them. In addition to these wires, I am looking for my Neutral Start Switch (because the car will not even pretend to start, I hope this is the solution). My manual says it will either be above the clutch pedal or just behind the Back Up Light Switch. It appears in neither place. I have the pedals and wiring harnesses (and many, many other parts) from the '85 donor vehicle. On the '87 AT harness, there is a white, 2-prong plug for the brake pedal and a black one for the gas pedal. On the '85 MT harness, there is no black plug but there is a white one for the brake pedal. The clutch pedal area has no mounting for a switch. Could that other set of wires that disappear to the top, back of the MT be the switch I'm looking for? (I didn't take note of the appearance of this plug before mounting up the MT. Thanks.
  5. I should have checked back sooner. I could have saved a little confusion... but you got it. I was talking about the mounts that connect the MT to the crossmember. I'll need a new one. After putting everything together, I noticed that I'll need longer bolts to mount the crossmember to the chassis. (As well as a rubber washer/vibration dampener since one is missing.) Thanks for all of the help. I'll make more use of the search function. Now let's see if I can get it the engine all hooked up...
  6. Wow. Good thing I asked. That's a lot easier. One side of the MT crossmember has it's washer. Might have to hit the junk yard. Also, one of the rubber dampener things that connects the MT to the crossmember has separated. Is there any way to re-adhere the rubber to the metal that it has separated from? Thanks.
  7. I've got an '87 GL wagon with an AT and I'm planning on swapping in a d/r MT from an '85 wagon. The MT is shorter. I've got the longer drive shaft and all of the otehr transmission related bits. My problem is the transmission crossmembers are completely different. And the mounting points on the car for the AT are further back. I plan to keep the MT crossmember on the MT and the AT crossmember on the car frame, then fab something that connects the two crossmembers. I assume I'm not the first to do this swap. Can anyone tell/show me what they have done in this case? Much appreciated.
  8. Thanks for the info. I just picked up a set of used 15" steel rims. 6 x 140mm from a 4Runner. I was thinking of drilling the rims as it seems easier than drilling the hubs. Is that so? I have a drill press and little to no previously acquired machining skills. The wheel mounting nuts are smaller on the Subaru than the ones the rims are designed for. Can I get wider nuts for the bolts already in the hubs of my Soob or will I have to fit thicker bolts into the hubs (creating a need for hub drilling anyways)? These rims also conveniently came with some 235/75/r15s, which I believe is somewhere around 28". I have not trial mounted them up to my wagon yet to see what kind of lift I will need to clear them. Will a 2" lift work? Again, thanks for your expertise.
  9. So I've been through every post here and have a pretty good idea of what I'd like to do to my newly acquired 87 GL wagon (EA82) 4x4 with a 5 speed d/r trans. I would like a bit of input before I get serious though. What are the max tire sizes for different lift sizes for the GLs? (I don't mind doing some cutting.) I thought 30" tires would be nice. The Offroo'd sticky said that a 4" lift would be appropriate with cutting. With the stock 1.8 engine, what tire size will not tax the engine too much. I'd like to use this around town as well as wheeling. Is 30" a bit big? Will I need to extend brake lines for any of the lift sizes? I understand the steering linkage needs extending in a lift but what about the shifters for the trans? Thanks for all of the help. I'm loving all of the Soobs I see in your posts. I'm stoked to get mine a little closer to that.
