  1. I'm replacing the stereo and speakers in my legacy but I have hit a few snags. I don't know what size speakers to get as I have read in some places that they need to be shallow mount speakers to accommodate for the manual windows going down. The car only has front speakers I just replaced the climate control unit so I know how to take apart the console and get to the receiver. Unfortunately the new climate control unit has blown bulbs so I will replace those when I open it up for the stereo. 1997 legacy Brighton wagon with manual windows and front door speakers only Here are my questions: What size speakers ( 6.5 inch i think) and do they need to be shallow mounts? Is there anything tricky about replacing the stereo receiver/head unit? Does anyone know of a good step by step to removing the door panel, especially the window crank? I have a pair of nice 7 x 10 inch speakers. Can they be fit into the back doors somehow? Thanks for the help. This site has been keeping my car running and passing inspection for a while now.
  2. Conclusion We test drove the Impreza and it was a bit funny. The steering wheel center piece and the passenger airbag both looked newer than the rest of the dash and there were a lot of brand new parts under the hood at the front of the car that seems to be more than what one would replace when dining the head gasket. It didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling and everyone who had any dealings with this used car dealer did not have very nice things to say. So...... We ended up with a 2009 forester that was very cheap for what it is and my wife is happier. That's what really matters in the end. Thanks for all the help and advice.
  3. I'll get it to a mechanic after hearing everyone's thoughts. I was thinking the price seemed a little low also but all of their cars seem to be priced a little low. We are going to go check out some newish foresters and imprezas at the subaru dealer this afternoon but the 2004 Impreza would keep me from having to take a loan. We are going to check it out Tuesday afternoon and I'll report back. Maybe I can get some pics. I didn't know carfax and auto check used the same sources. My wishful thinking for some good news I suppose. Thanks for all the info. It is appreciated.
  4. Thanks for the torque bind description. I'll be sure to check that out. I saw the auto check report that is posted but it seems vague. There are big gaps in the mileage readings and no service records like I see on carfax reports through dealer websites. Can anyone run the vin through carfax and send it to me or fill me in on any interesting details? I guess I may just have to pony up the $30. Thanks for all the help.
  5. Thanks for all the info. I know about he cronic head gasket failure in subarus as my legacy is starting to leak so the replacement seemed to make the car worth a lot more. I did not think about the quality of parts though so thanks for the insight. The price seemed a little too cheap but if the title is clean then maybe it is just a good deal. Unfortunately Maine used car dealers are closed by law on Sundays? Who knew? I "had" to sell my civic si hatch since we have a baby girl coming in the spring and the lack of doors was going to be inconvenient (and my wife can but won't drive a standard). It sold rather suddenly yesterday. Money talks. We have been in the market for another subaru since the one we have is a tank. How do I check for torque bind? I think I heard to crank the wheel all the way and let it run at idle in drive and see if it jumps. Correct? Thanks again and any other hints, tips or insight into what I should ask about is greatly appreciated. I am handy and resourceful but I am not a mechanic.
  6. I sold my Civic suddenly yesterday and need a car. I saw this Impreza and I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to what I should look for when I go check it out. The new timing belt and head gasket seems promising. Also, can anyone run a vin check for me please? JF1GG68544H814484 Thanks in advance for all the help everyone provides. This site is great because of all the great people who help each other out. http://www.autolandmaine.com/detailAutoland.php?id=96680&qURL=%2Finventory.php%3FdealerID%3D%24dealerID%26year%3D%24year%26make%3D%24make%26model%3D%24model%26submit%3Dsubmit%26page%3D%24page[/url]
  7. Does anyone know of a good step by step instruction to recharging your a/c? I see lots of what not to do so hopefully I won't make those mistakes. I'm going to replace some o rings and then try to recharge the system. A good how-to link for the common man would be appreciated. thanks
  8. Just thought I would mention that cutting the wire to the ignition micro switch has successfully stopped the beeping for a few months now. The one downside is it has disabled the "shifter lock" on my automatic transmission so that I can take the key out of the car while it is in drive/ reverse/ etc. Not really a big deal except my wife has a mini fit when the car won't start because I left it in drive. I have a standard so I often forget to put it in park. She always manages to figure it out but I catch hell for it.
  9. The L shaped fitting looks nice. My only concern would be whether there is enough space for the sensor to fit. Of the two sensors I recently work with I think the back would not fit and the front would but only if the L was pointing in the right direction. I think it would be worth a good look at your sensor locations before ordering. I replaced the front with a new Bosch sensor but I don't think a non fouler would have fit in that space so the L would have to be the right fitting there. I don't know if it would do anything on the front sensor though. Also, the non fouler I used must have been aluminum because it drilled like butter. Took all of a minute.
  10. In my 97 legacy they looked like exactly the same sensors just different shaped plugs at the electrical connectors. The upstream connector that I did today was a triangle plug and the downstream had a square plug. Otherwise exactly the same. I used a 1/2 inch bit and it worked perfect just a week or two ago. Good luck
  11. I went to advanced auto and they said they are not allowed to clear codes so I did the old disconnect the battery for a while and turn the key a few times trick. It worked this time and the light has not come back on yet. My wife is taking the car for a 3 hour trip tomorrow so that will be the true test. I also just replaced the front o2 sensor with a new Bosch sensor I found on amazon fo $50. The sensor that came out of the car was a bosch so i stuck with that brand. I was able get at it through the open hood and did not have to lift the car. This one was tougher to get out. I ended up running the car for 2-3 minutes to heat it up and it came loose. The whole job took all of 25 minutes. Hopefully the car will be happy and continue to go for years. Thanks to all for the help with this little job. I'm learning new stuff all the time.
  12. The car sold last night before i could get there. You snooze you lose I guess. Thanks for the help regardless.
  13. Thanks for all the quick tips. I'll try to answer some questions and hopefully get some more feedback. -The carfax shows very meticulous, regular service at a subaru dealer and one owner. -the listing claims new tires -It is being sold by a reputable Honda dealership so I "assume" no leaks and fluids should be good but I will hopefully be checking it out in the next few days. It's an hour away. On the other hand, we bought my wife's legacy at *harlies Subaru in ME and they had replaced one tire with a different size which burned up the transmission some how. I took weeks to get them to fess up to it and pay for the massive repair. I'll look close at things. -Yes it seems expensive for a 2006 but to make a comparison I just saw a listed 2006 with 236000 miles listed for $7500. Half the price but 20x the miles. Imprezas are like gold up here with the rough winters and the ever rising price of gas. A 2007 with 80k is going for nearly $11k in another listing. Any other advice is certainly appreciated and thanks.
  14. I found a 2006 Impreza ob special edition with just 12000 miles for approx $15000. The car fax looks legit and it is at a Honda dealer. Is there any red flag for a car with such few miles and will this lead to future problems? I have a baby coming in the spring and I'm looking for something safer and more reliable for my wife. I'll be selling my 2005 civic si (if anyone is interested let me know) and I will keep her 97 legacy since it really isn't worth much to sell/trade. It will be fun to have a beater to tinker with. Anyway, any advice on the Impreza is appreciated. We have been considering a new one with the improved mpgs but the price is deterrent. Also, I have the typical rust behind the wheel wells on the legacy. Any good tutorials on a decent repair procedure. Thanks to all. I have been on this forum for a short time and gotten mountains of good info and advice.
  15. I replaced the front pads, rotors and calipers this past summer but did not know about the diaphragm until recently. Pushing it back in seems to have solved the problem as the light is still off and has been for a while. The fluid has been steady and full since the service this past summer. Thanks for the info.
  16. I just finished installing the anti fouler on the down stream sensor in my 97 legacy brighton. Some tips that I wish I knew before. -The sensor requires a 22mm wrench to remove/reinstall. I didn't trust my adjustable at the weird angle so I went and bought 3 different sizes 20-22mm. I got lucky that i got the right one and saved another trip. -a little penetrant and it came right off. Lucky me I guess. My Tacoma o2 sensor was not that easy a few years ago -After I got it loose i went to unplug from under the hood and saw that I could reach the sensor easy as could be from above instead of wrapping my arm around the exhaust pipe. Shame on me for not looking. It went back in a lot easier. I have a drill press and the anti fouler was cake to drill through. I'm driving to MA for a wedding tomorrow so we'll see if it worked. I'll update with the results and thanks for all the help Update: I started the car a few hours after posting the above and check engine light was on. I had the negative terminal disconnected for about 10 minutes. Shouldn't the computer reset and clear all the codes? Did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.
  17. I searched through all the sensors on the Autozone website and found a few that listed the thread width as 18mm. I guess I'll go with that since it agrees with the sentiment here. Thanks for the help and if it turns out to be a different size I will certainly post it here.
  18. I'm about to set this up on my 97 legacy this weekend. Does anyone know what size anti fouler to get? I can't tell without taking the sensor out and I would like to do this in one swoop. Thanks for any help
  19. I read in another thread that the rubber piece on the bottom of the brake fluid cap needs to be pushed In so it is concave. It worked and the light has been off for a few weeks now. It took about 1 minute. Thanks for all the suggestions, my next project is the o2 sensors since the check engine light is on.
  20. The parking brake light in the dash that says "brake" in my 97 Legacy has been intermittently going on and off for some time now. I read in other threads that low brake fluid could cause this but the fluid is full. The front brakes are new last summer, a large amount of the fluid was drained/replaced, and the light will go on off regardless of temp and driving time. Seems totally random. When I started the car and put the brake down the other day the light went off with the parking brake lever going down as it should and then went back on when I pulled the parking brake lever up later. I'm thinking it might be the sensor (if there is one). Does anyone know where the parking brake sensor is and if it can be cleaned, repaired, replaced or disabled? I am probably trading in for new Impreza soon and trying to get the car tuned up so they don't nickel and dime me to death. Thanks
  21. I'm having a similar problem. The car beeps not stop on some trips and sometimes not more than usual. It seems to be worse when raining or really humid but that is justa theory. The door switch is working fine showing the open door on the dash indicator and the dome light turns on and off as it should. I read in another post that it could be the ignition key sensor that senses the key in the ignition. I'm looking at the 2 wires coming from the switch on top of the ignition assembly and I'm debating cutting the black or the black with white stripe. I'm shooting for the ground. Is there anything else that would set off the chime? Any advice or thoughts are always welcome. Thanks
  22. Hi, I read your post about stopping the malfunctioning chime caused by the ignition microswitch malfunction. I'm going to give it shot tomorrow afternoon. If you h ave any advise I would love to hear it. Thanks for the great info

    Nick

  23. My 97 legacy is doing this recently. Incredibly annoying and non stop from start till arrival. The door sensor seems to be ok since the light I the dash is not showing an open door. I'm going to try cutting the Mocroswitch/sensor in the ignition like legacy2.5 described. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks and I'll relay my progress on this thread. Update: I cut the solid black wire on top of the ignition and drove around for 20 minutes of errands and all seems well. I think the key lock that disables the key from being removed while in gear has been disabled but the horrible, non stop beeping has stopped. I'm calling it a success.
