  1. The 1983 owner's manual has an item called Vehicle Posture Adjustment to adjust the front and the rear ground clearances (suspension ride heights). Apparently the adjustment requires a special wrench. The adjustment is too much to completely describe here. I can photocopy the pages if you want them.

Here is a link to a very good description of the hill holder

The 1983 owner's manual specifies 80W, 85W and 90 weight API classification GL-5 gear lube depending on temperature. It indicates a capacity of 3.2 US quarts for the 4WD manual transmission. Hopefully someone else here can give you more information.

  2. Thank you very much for the information, MorganM. Unfortunately, the link did not work, but I think I found Subaru Heaven, to wit:

I have read that the proprietor can be rather unpleasant, but sometimes I have a bad day, too.

Anyway, I'm struggling with parting with my wagon because I like it a lot. But at 208,000 miles, it has developed some transmission, front axle, and other problems and I can't see spending the money to get it fixed. The engine (except alternator) is good and the center lamp works. I would be very happy if my wagon could be a donor car to other enthusiasts.

    Thanks again!

  3. The four speed, dual range transmission in my 1982 GL 4wd station wagon has started to make a whining sound while under way. At 201,000 miles the tranny is showing its age. I had the car to the dealer today and he estimates 10 to 12 hours to repair plus, of course, parts. Probably about $2000 or $2500 to rebuild the transmission and front differential.

Am I nuts for even thinking about spending that kind of money? I am nuts because in the last 20 months I have spent about $6000 on the car (front half shafts, carburetor, alternator, water pump, oil pump, transmission mounts, etc).

Should I quit now and give it up? Drive it until the transmission totally fails? Part it out? I really like the car and it otherwise runs well, but it's getting way rusty and expensive to fix.

Well, thanks for reading this and thanks in advance for any advice. By the way, I am located in north-eastern Illinois.

  4. I have been reading with great interest the recent discussions of the GL10 and Gen1 and Gen2 Subarus. The discussions lead me to a question: is the Loyale considered Gen3? The Loyale seems much larger than my 1982 GL, which I think is a Gen2.

I would like to thank all of you for your insight about these vehicles. It has helped me a lot in making decisions about parts and repairs for my twenty-one year old station wagon!

P.S. would my WRX be considered Gen X? Gen Y? Oh well... Thanks again!
