Thanks for the replies! I'll do as advised tomorrow. I've been ignoring it for awhile but I think I better figure out what it is before I get a hundred miles out in the desert from any town and break down. I just did a major tune up including installing new front springs, mounts and struts. I figure I might as well get this noise fixed also. I need another 18,000 miles to hit 300,000 and I need something to get me out in the middle of the desert and back for another year. Subarian, I guess you would call it central Utah. It is about two hours south of Orem. I get to off road in some pretty rough stuff in any direction just minutes from town. Red rock country, but not as close to Moab as I would like. I moved from Provo last spring, I was sick of that place, the traffic, and the stupid drivers. The only thing I like about that area was Van Wangenens pawn shop. You might have seen my Soob. An 83 red wgn with black Por15 on the rust over rear wheels. I never saw another one like it in Utah county... Or the rest of the state for several years now.

EA81 wgn 4wd I've got this knocking sound coming from the rear. I can only hear it at low speed like 5 mph. Could it be the universal joint? If so where would I find a new one? At an autoparts store like Napa or would I have to go to a dealer?

Thanks for the replies! Will a flush work if there is hard build up in core? I was thinking of getting a new core and doing the simple replacement by cutting a hole in the side of heater box as written by someone on the forum. But I wanted to try everything else before it came to that. I never thought of checking the cable that keeps the cold air out. That just might be it. If not then I'll reverse flush and if that does not work then replace the core.

What year and model are you talking about? If it is after 84 I can't help you.

Run a jumper wire from pos to the tab on starter.

On cold days the heater air goes cold about 10 seconds after I turn on the fan. Instead of getting a new heater core I put in a new thermostat and added new coolant after flushing. But it didn't solve the problem. Anyone?

I am interested in the push bar... I am also interested in just driving up there to take a look at what is left and what will work with my wgn.

That is my wgn... There is a lot of rock and steep rough roads that a stock Soob can have fun crawling over. Then if you have a Soob with at least a 6inch lift then there is some pretty cool rock to play on. The great part about it is that is it soooo close to the SLC and Provo area. The down side is that if you show up at the wrong time it can be much too crowded. I had a lot of people laughing at me for even just showing up with an old Soob, but I would like to think they were impressed with what it could do as long as I had clearance. I have to be careful since it is my ride to work and everything else. The week before I put a big dent in the oil pan shield with a rock that jumped out of the ground. I would love to see other Soobs show up for a try at it. I hear the jacked up yellow hatch from Orem plays out there sometimes.

Looking north, northwest. Little Moab is just left of center under the white mountain in the at the bottom of the saddle. Also the rocky point near the center left is at the bottom right corner of Little Moab.

I am guessing you already know which dirt road off of redwood road takes you to the nutty putty caves. If not it is about 7 miles north of Elberta. If you are heading south then it will be the well used dirt road to the right just before you get to a dump with really high fences around it. Some call the dump the "baseball park." So you head west into the hills several miles till you see the first little spot of rock off to the left close to the road on the east side of a hill. Keep going west and around the hill on the other side is another very little spot. All along you should be able to see the largest spot to the right or the north off in the distance. From the road it just looks like a bald bump on the south face of those small mountains and it stands out because of its lighter color. Once you see them you will know from all the tire marks and gouges all over the rock. If you are on your way to nutty putty then you will pass right by all three spots and then you head north a few miles. If you have gone over the pass and find yourself looking into a very desolate valley then you have gone too far, but I doubt that will happen they are very easy to see. I have some pics, but can't post them yet. Hope to see some Soobs up there sometime.

Found little moab yesterday... Crawled around it some... If I had a jacked up soob it would be pretty fun. I now know why they say it is easy to dent your ride, it is a rough patch of rock. There were a lot of jacked up jeeps and trucks all over that place. I was hoping to see another Soob but none showed up.

I've heard of Little Moab but I had no idea of where it was. It is funny that you mentioned Bald Knoll above Heber. I spend a lot of time up in that area in the summers with my Soob. Sat night during the snow storm I was out running around in the snow till 1am, what a blast! It was so funny to watch everyone getting stuck in inches of snow or sliding all over the place.

Had the afternoon off so I ran out and explored the nutty putty area to try out my new mud and snow tires. I've never been there before so it was pretty cool. Only about 6 inches of snow on the ground and no mud so I wasn't too woried about getting stuck out there by myself. The sky was clear and the air was clean unlike the Salt Lake and Utah county areas. My old 83Wgn was pretty happy to crawl around in 4 low. Seems like there are roads all over that place as far as I could see. I think I'll head back up there Sunday if the storm has passed by then.

Still a lot of snow once you get near Eureka and then beyond. A lot more than I thought. Just west of Utah lake most of the snow is gone and the roads are pretty muddy and fun! I stayed out of the deep snow and mud since I was out by myself. Anyone in Utah got any wheels they want to sale for 80s Soob? I need two.

I plan to head out west to the topaz mountain area this spring and do a little exploring through out the vernon hills just beyond Eureka. In the summer the Soob will spend alot of time east of Heber and beyond up into the Uintas as far as the roads go. I am surprised I have not yet beat my Soob to death. I took my Subaru up many nasty roads, one of the worst was up the north side of Notch Peak. It was me and a bunch of ATVs, they all looked at me like I was crazy. When I find time to head out west this spring I'll post the date and time or at least an email. I am interested in seeing this SubaruHummer. I think tomorrow will be a good day for a drive out west of Utah lake. I know where the jacked up yellow hatch lives, maybe I'll stop by and mention the message board. I understand that car came from EZAP up there in the north west if I remember right. It used to be a beautiful dark forest green.

I'm in Utah county... My 83Wgn spends quite a bit of time in the mountains east of Heber and in the desert west and southwest of Utah lake. Its been awhile since I've been to the message board, I had to take a break. I am sure I have seen some of you other utah Soob nutts on the road and you probably saw me staring back at your Subaru. I would be interested if any outings actually get planned and executed here in Utah. I finally found the bright yellow jacked up Hatch in Orem. Yes, all my Soobs rust and without some major body work they all will keep on rusting. Too much salt on the roads.
