  1. I have a 98 2.5L Outback built Jan 97. It has EGR. Is 95 the only 2.2L I can sub in? Thanks, Matt
  2. I believe after seeing just how little support the cylinder has from the rest of the block that vibration is the primary factor in gasket failure. In fact it makes perfect sense that the wear areas are caused by this. Graphite probably works very well as a polishing agent. The cylinders are in effect cantilevered with a different natural frequency than the rest of the head, which would move much less relative to the cylinder. I cant be the 1st to suggest that they need to support the cyl wall more; if they need to increase H2O pump capacity / cooler thermostat then so be it. This of course is academic. It would be interesting to see a block with a tounge and groove cut into the cyl face and head to lock it into place... if there is even enough real estate for that.
  3. I had used the latest OEM head gaskets. pn 11044AA610 heads didn't need to be milled.
  4. Hi all, I own a 98 OBW. I had my head gaskets replaced 50k ago and just found out that they are likely blown again. This was back in Jan '05. the car has 225k on it now. How long should I expect a set to last? Dumping $1000 every 2 years is rediculous!
  5. Hunting down causes for CEL's would be a lot easier if I knew what conditions from sensors caused the CEL. (Thankyou Mr. Obvious) Are there any diagrams / algorithms that a dealership or SOA have that show what the ECU checks each time at startup for CEL's? What a tool that would be!
  6. Got my OBW back yesterday. Runs better than ever! After 70-80 mi I got a CEL for EGR Flow malfunction (P0400) back again. The Headgasket replacement (and exhaust vlv replacement - large crack from edge to base) fixed the cyl 4 misfire. Are there any diagrams / algorithms that a dealership or SOA have that show what the ECU checks each time for CEL's? What a tool that would be!
  7. I suprisingly have a head gasket failure. The shop I have looking at it is Georges Foreign Car Service in Grand Rapids, MI they quoted me $850 in labor. I ordered parts from 1stsubaruparts.com for $150. long shot, I know, but does anyone have any experience dealing with any shops in West Michigan? I was refered to these guys from a friend, but I still wouldn't mind hearing where else people have gone... Is the antifreeze additive work for 98 MY as well?
  8. UPDATE: cyl 4 misfire caused by...drum roll..........head gasket failure! The shop I have looking at it is Georges Foreign Car Service in Grand Rapids, MI they quoted me $850 in labor. 9. I recently bought a 98 OBW 2.5L 5sp w/ 160k. It had a check engine light with the following faults: P0400 EGR flow malfunction P0304 Cyl 4 misfire It also idles low/rough once it is warmed up. I revved (sp) the engine to 3000 a few times and the EGR did actuate; also the diaphragm holds vacuum. I took the EGR off and cleaned it w/ carb cleaner and it still has the problem. My gas mileage is only 25mpg, but it drives great other than that. Before I go replacing parts, is there anything that I have overlooked? Is there a temp sensor in the circuit that I can check? The Haynes manual doesn't help much beyond what I have tried. (It's worth the $14 I payed for it, not much more...) Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions. -Matt
