  1. One thing not discussed is dishonesty. Many years ago my son was a mechanic at an auto dealer (not Subaru) and was pressured to do repairs that were not really needed. He finally quit and went to work for an honest independant shop. I am anxious to hear from you dealer people, Greg
  2. I would think that amount of money is too high. There are a LOT of Foresters and Outbacks running around in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan...you might try a Google search for that region...(Subaru, sale, Michigan), or something similar, just to see what's available. I know that Subies are running around with hi-milage, but I wouldn't consider it a given that every Subaru is going to last that long, especially in harsh climates and conditions. I would try for a lower mileage vehicle at a higher price...might be cheaper in the long run. Good luck.
  3. If the battery cranks the engine over ok, but car is slow to start, you may have a fuel pump problem...car is not getting fuel fast enough. I agree about the ancient age of the battery. I hate to spend money, but a new battery can help avoid tow truck fees. A seasonal check of all hoses helps to cut down on service calls also. -19 below in the state of Yooper (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) last month and our 99 Legacy kicked over like it was new.
  4. My wife has had two Legacy wagons with the 2.2 engine. Both used on her mail route with a lot of stop-start, dirt roads, blasting through snow drifts (most of the time ) and just all around rough wear. They performed like a champ! We just went thru a minor blizzard this evening in the '99 Legacy wagon and it sure gives a great sense of security.
  5. My wife has had two Legacy wagons--91 and 99--both right hand drive, and both automatic transmissions, that she used on her mail route. They were very reliable. We are still using the 99 in northern Michigan to play around in the snow. Great car.
  6. I have read that almost all wheel sizes on Subaru's are interchangeable, and I am thinking of getting larger wheels for my '99 Legacy wagon. My question is about fender clearance with larger tires. Has anyone who has gone to larger wheels experienced any problems with clearance...or maybe more importantly, with steering? Thanks for any help.
