  1. Ah, maybe it is more of a click than a knock. I tried adding video to flickr, hopefully this works: https://www.flickr.com/photos/158343911@N05/27396832117/in/dateposted-public/
  2. Thanks Dee2 for the advice. If it gets noisy again I'll try the ATF but the noise quieted way down to what I expect. Maybe that noise was due to a lifter. When I had it apart, one of hydraulic lash adjuster dropped out while I had it tilted on the engine stand and it lost some oil. Not sure, maybe it needed a while to pump that back up? Anyway, feeling much better, everything seems to be working at the moment. Will take it for a spin tomorrow hopefully and after that I'll teach my kid how to drive a clutch
  3. Ok, looks like I can't upload a video. I do think the noise is quieting so maybe it was just lack of oil!
  4. Not sure if this will work or not, attaching a short video of noise it is making
  5. Pulled the engine, replaced head gaskets, sealed up the engine, put it back in the car and it started right up. yay! Bad news is that I hear a knock while it is running. First thought it would go away after oil started distributed around the engine but still there after 10 minutes. It is actually fairly loud. Louder than the rest of the normal engine noise. Any ideas what may be causing that? Thanks for any help!
  6. My bad, threads were fine. A trip to Napa and purchased a 6mm x 1.0 tap and chased the threads. That did the trick.
  7. time to vent... bought a apdi 8019305 radiator, suppose to be an exact fit. Went to install and couldn't get the top bolt holes to line up. Radiator sat about a 1/4 inch too high. Finally, after many hours was able to get it installed, then went to install the a/c fan and fan shroud and the damn threads don't match the original. What a pita!
  8. Ok, probably just leave it then. A little worried because after reading more, I didn't remove the fire ring, so there is a bit of a gouge in a few places.
  9. Got the genuine subaru head gasket for the ea82 engine. Does that gasket get crushed when you torque that down? Reason I ask, was thinking about removing the head after I already installed the new gasket and doing some work to try and flatten that head surface more. Was wondering if that gasket would still be good to use or if I would need a brand new one.
  10. That is great info! Thanks so much!
  11. Oh cool, I was hoping to hear that!
  12. So spec says .002 tolerance for head surface. Anyone try head gasket repair with larger tolerance or is that a must to follow? Well the heads seem to be ok it is actual block surface that seems to be out on the .002 tolerance. So hard to get anything in there to get it flat with the alignment pins.

  14. Thanks for the replies! Gonna think a little about this one. Actually lifter tick wasn't too bad before I took it apart. Would hear it at first start up and then it would go away after a few minutes. Maybe after oil pump re-seal and the new o-ring in cam tower it will be better. Crossing fingers anyway.
  15. Ugh, worse off than I originally thought. Thought only one was bad, not 7 out of 8. Damn. Is this something that is an easy fix for a dyi'er? Looks like those lifter buckets are pressed in? Any tips on getting the old HLA's out if they are stuck. My only thought was to use pliers to pull them out but would probably mar em up pretty good.
  16. Ok, replacing head gasket so I have head removed from engine. If I turn the head upside down one lash adjuster will fall out. The others I can't even pull out (Not sure how I would get those other 3 out if I wanted to). Is it ok for the lash adjuster to be such a loose fit?
  17. Hmm, think it may be related to bad ground or something. Had alternator tested and it tested good. When I took off starter I noticed the wire connection to that wasn't real tight, wasn't loose but didn't take much to spin the nut off. Maybe a bad connection there. I'll check out the other suggestions listed here too. How do you check for parasitic draw?
  18. Anyone with a suggestion on an after market radiator for a non-turbo 93 loyale? I put a hole in mine pulling my engine, ugh. Anyway, as I look at the pictures for radiators they say direct fit but the screw holes for ac fan and fan shroud don't look like they line up. Thanks for any help!
  19. Haven't driven my Loyale in a while because it has been sitting while I find the time to replace head gaskets. The battery was dead but didn't think anything of it because it has been sitting. Just took it in to get it tested (really just wanted to charge it up) and the result is that it is a bad battery. Going to get the alternator tested next. I do have a lifetime warranty on the alternator which is good but the battery that was tested was only 2 years old. I have been fighting this for years now. Been replacing batteries and alternators way too often. Think this is now the 3rd or 4th alternator I have replaced and it is taking out batteries with it. Anyone else have this issue on this car or is it just my bad luck?
  20. Ah ok, that makes sense!. Thanks everyone for all your advice! Now I have enough info to continue with this project!
  21. Cool, thanks for the response idosubaru! I did a search, is HLA = "hydraulic lash adjustment"? What is mizpah?
  22. ok Jono, I'll ask, how much for gaskets and orings? Shipping must be really expensive though from AUS to US? How long would something like that even take to ship?
  23. That's what I was thinking, but just wanted to check if others had good luck with after market. So I would need head gasket, valve cover gasket, and intake manifold gasket? Oh and there is that o-ring in the cam tower.
