  1. Tried this again, car is started. Push clutch in and put in 1st gear. Let off clutch and car acted like it wants to move forward but doesn't. Also Tried reverse, let out on clutch and acted like it wants to move but doesn't. Back when I had a bad seal I had to add gear fluid to drive, they smoke smell doesn't smell like that. And the smoke doesn't appear until I give it gas. The smell isn't as filthy smelling as oil, it's more of a light bitter smell. I don't know how else to describe it. Side note, 2nd 3rd and 4th gears don't give me the impression the car wants to move like 1st and reverse. When I put it in 5th, the engine shakes.
  2. Since I parked it, I've left the e-brake off and in 1st gear. I'm able to move it by pushing back and forth. Just started it and had it in 1st gear, let off the clutch and nothing happened. I thought maybe it would stall but it acted as tho I had my foot on the accelerator. When I gave it gas, that's when a slight grinding noise started (was very slight) and the white smoke appeared where the trans meets the engine. It will go into gear and the clutch works fine. Yes, when I put fluid in the trans yesterday it seemed to be completely dry. I added about 2 qts before the level on the dip stick came up. Today I don't have time to drain the fluid as I'm trying to get my truck going. I'll have more time tomorrow.
  3. 93 Impreza L wagon: I drove to Chicago a couple months ago and had no trouble. Came back and the next day, driving 50 mph the stick popped out of gear and would not get back into gear. When my timing belt broke a few years ago, the same thing happened. Ordered the water pump kit through rockauto and have had it for a while. Haven't fixed my car because I also have a truck. Truck is broke down so I decided to change the belt. After taking everything apart, the belt was still in tact so I changed it anyway. Put everything back together, started it and tried to drive. Light smoke and burning smell came from above the transmission area. I checked the trans fluid and was dry. About 6 years ago, my trans had a fluid leak so my buddy and I opened up the transmission and replaced the seal along with something else (I can't remember). I filled the transmission fluid, using 90w gear oil. Gears still won't engage, more light smoke and burning smell. Please tell me I didn't "F" my transmission, any help is appreciated.
  4. My 93 Impreza has a whining noise that gets louder the fast I go, only in 3rd gear. I tried googling the problem and most of the answers pointed towards the throwout bearing. What do you all think? It's been years since I've had to post anything here and I'm eternally grateful for any and all help! Thanks
  5. When my buddy replaced the rack and pinion I don't think he connected all the parts back correctly. The line was 'resting' on a section of the inside body. From normal road vibrations, the line wore down enough to produce a hole/leak. I've already secured the line away from possible future problems. I'll look into replacing it because replacing just the damaged section will require the entire line to be removed anyway. Thanks for the help! I'm proud of my Suby and I'm known for it around town
  6. Apparently one of my power steering lines on my 93 Impreza has been rubbing against the inside engine wall for some time now. I found the leak however it is on one of the steel lines and I'm having trouble figuring out what it is called in order to buy the correct item. (I hate going to a parts store to discover the name only to purchase elsewhere) If anyone has the Chilton manual the line is #4 of figure 147 on page 8-34. It is labeled as "Pipe D" For everyone else, it's one of the long pipes under the car that connect to the steering fixture that is attached to the rack and pinion. Not the power steering pressure hose, that is the one that connects to the pump. The one I need is after the power steering pressure hose. Thanks in advance!
  7. Oops, posted in wrong place! And I have a 93 Impreza L

  9. Thanks, I did a search and found a lot of useful information. The info I found described the front driver and rear passenger wheels associated with the hill holder, those were the wheels that locked (when put on the flat bed, only two that didn't spin). I am now almost convinced the clutch replacement will fix the problem. Thanks again for responding
  10. Other than simple fixes I don't do much work on my vehicle. My buddy who is a mechanic does it all and my "radio flyer" is the first and only Subaru he's worked on. He's replaced the clutch, rack and pinion, starter, alternator, calipers, timing belt, brakes and pads and shoes. He even opened my transmission when the front seal leaked. My car has been a long list of firsts for him. My clutch dropped to the floor on Sunday and because he had never adjusted it since he last changed it he added play to it so it could last til next Sunday. I have the clutch kit from rockauto. The day after (yesterday) my brakes seized and had tow to his place. He doesn't believe me when I say the clutch is tied into the brakes. I explained, at an incline all I have to do is have the clutch in and don't have to have the brake pedal down nor have in gear and the car won't roll back. I think when he adjusted the clutch he also adjusted the brakes? To correct the brake seize he disconnected the vacuum hose from the brake sensor and capped it off. Though I have manual brakes (non abs) I can still drive until next Sunday when he can replace the clutch. I think when the clutch is replaced it will fix the brake problems. My questions are: 1, am I correct in my thinking? 2, is there a way I can explain to him how the clutch corresponds to the brakes? 1993 Subaru Impreza L 1.8 Any help will be greatly appreciated, my Suby is pushing 340k and have yet to have major issues that couldn't be fixed.
  11. Hi, yesterday my speedometer stopped working on my 93 Impreza. I downloaded an app for another vehicle that has worked well. Since last year sometime I've noticed when I start out from a stop the needle lags around 20 mph and then jumps to 30 when I get there. That really only happened like twice a week when I payed attention. So today I removed the dash cluster and found its controlled by a cable. I removed the cable, cleaned the contacts best I could without removing much of the grease and the problem still exists. I went under the hood and cleaned the connections from the speed sensor I remember replacing when the transmission was removed for repair. Does anyone have any ideas? I checked oreilyauto.com and rockauto.com to see if I could simply purchase a new cable, sadly I cannot. I've gone about 25 miles since it stopped (according to the app) and my mileage sits on 314238. I'd truly like to get this fixed not only cuz I deliver pizza for a living but also I'd like to hit the big 500k with the speedometer. I look forward to your help
  12. First off, my timing belt was replaced in August, my fuel pump (though O'Reily's sold me a smaller one than my car requires) was replaced in December, my bearing and front seal was replaced on my transmission in January and I also had my starter rebuilt in February. When I start my manual 5 speed 1993 Subaru Impreza L wagon, most of the time the idle stays high for the first hour or two of driving after a night of being parked. If I rev the engine in neutral, sometimes that will cause the idle to go to normal. I'm wondering if there is anything anyone thinks may be causing this? Also, when I'm in first just starting out and I've tried giving more gas or less gas, there is what sounds like a sheep saying "baaahh" which sounds like one of the gears in the transmission. It sometimes also makes this sound in the change into second gear, however I've noticed my idle tends to be high at these moments as well. But its happened when the idle is low as well. I regularly check all my fluids when I put fuel in my vehicle and they seem to keep at a reasonable level. My transmission is running with full synthetic 75w90 gear lubricant, as I recently researched to be best for my Subaru. Any ideas on what I can check or what this horrible sound may be? Any and all thoughts are extremely useful and I appreciate and thank you in advance!
  13. Which of the following do I need to purchace? Input Shaft Bearing Input Shaft Bearing Input Shaft Repair Sleeve Input Shaft Repair Sleeve Input Shaft Seal Input Shaft Seal Output Shaft Repair Sleeve Output Shaft Repair Sleeve Output Shaft Seal Output Shaft Seal Shift Shaft Repair Sleeve Shift Shaft Repair Sleeve Shift Shaft Seal Shift Shaft Seal I'm on rockauto and I'm not getting very far with the lists I am offered. Thank you for all your help!
  14. I took my Suby to a shop where they used a lift. They informed me the front main seal only leaks when accelerating and also think it is a bearing issue. I'm more than likely going to buy the parts via rockauto, based on the diagnosis does anyone know exactly which parts I will need?
  15. My mistake, I should have said its a manual transmission but I will run your answers by my mechanic to see what he says. Any ideas for the manual transmission?
  16. My 93 Impreza L wagon has a bad tranny leak. My regular mechanic doesnt have the neccesary means to do a diagnostic to see exactly where the leak is coming from. I have an appointment Tuesday to have another shop due the test. However my question is this: has anyone heard of a tranny going bad? I have know about the leak for some time, about two years when I put a new clutch in. Since then it has become one of my regular "checks" when I put fuel in; oil, power stearing, antifreeze, wiper fluid. I would only have to add fluid maybe once a month until now. Because of the intensity of the leak, I have to add fluid everytime I start the vehicle. My regular mechanic thinks the leak is originating from inside the tranny due to the fact he cannot find the leak by looking under the hood, behind the passenger front wheel nor underneath. Can anyone offer suggestions or anything else that may help me? Anything is greatly appreciated!
  17. I pruchased my Suby from a gentleman in Kentucky with 100k already on it. So not being sure whether he ever changed it out, I have 285k now. Thanks for posting.

  19. I will try car-part.com, thanks. And being that its an older Suby and the starter hasnt been replaced in the last 185k I think a new starter is in order. Also because of the job I have of constantly starting. Thanks for all your help!
  20. The clicking is only every so often. I deliver pizza for a living as to why I thought it would be the starter itself. (The constant on/off) My buddy owns his own shop and whenever I need tools I dont have or questions, he allows me access. We cleaned and professionally sanded all the connections, battery and ground and this has not helped. That is the reason we both think it is the starter itself. Also, due to my job I cannot take the starter off, rebuild it and have it replaced by the time I need the car again. Does this help explain?
  21. Rockauto.com shows the starter for my 93 Impreza L wagon to be a Remy 16889. Ebay also suggests this part. Can anyone tell me if it is the right one? My car is manual and I have noticed some starters specify whether they are for an automatic. Are the starters interchangable? My starter is just beginning to go, I am afraid I only have another week or so before it goes completely. Thanks!
  22. My 93 Impreza originally had 13" tires. I bought the car with 16" tires and when it came time to purchase new, due to the width of the tires they were expensive. I was given Legacy wheels size 15 and they have worked well for the past three years. I hope that helps.
  23. Thanks for the help everyone! I didnt have time to wait for rockauto or ebay to ship the parts. I went with oreillys who price matched autozone. Just over $300 for the belt, pulleys, tensioners and water pump but well worth the cost as now I am back on the road and back at both of my jobs. The car is actually riding smoother than it was before the belt broke so I would say something other than the belt definitely was the cause of the belt failing. So far so good, as most of my local mechanics all said the valves would be bent due to the belt snapping while the car was on. They were wrong and I am happy with the results. Just proves to me I can trust a subaru owner more than I can guys who dont usually work on Subarus. Southern Illinois has many Subarus however mostly newer, in the future you can bet any problems I have will be asked on here first! Thanks again for all your help! I will post a picture on my little red wagon "Radio Flyer" soon enough.
