  1. Yea I currently have a Magnaflow muffler on the car. I like the muffler, but with the rear cat delete and the stock resonator, headers and hi flow cat its a bit too loud. I'm looking at an sti muffler and resonator for 50 bucks. Just wondering about the flow of these. I want the car a bit quieter, but still deep. I'm at 2.25 pipe all the way back to the stock resonator. I'm gonna go go 2.25 back from there once I figure out what resonator to go with.

  2. Resonators are non-restrictive. They typically have a straight through pipe that has holes in the sides, surrounded by fiberglass. The major consideration for restriction is the diameter of the pipe.

Alright gotcha. Need to replace the resonator on my 97 obs. Have full exhaust now, but with rear cat delete it is too loud with the glasspack muffler. Looking at an 04 sti resonator. I just don't want it too quiet haha!
  3. I need some advice/knowledge on resonators for my 97 OBS. I had a plugged rear cat and replaced it with a 2.5 inch test pipe. The car runs much better!! But now it is very loud with the headers, high flow front cat and Magnaflow muffler. The stock resonator is very short, maybe 12 inches top. I want to run 2.5 inch from there back to the muffler. Will a stock WRX cat back work? Is it 2.5 inch? I dont want the car to be stock sound, just a bit quieter and less raspy.

  4. They'll bolt on just fine. If you have phase 1 heads get in touch with Cometic gaskets and have them make a 2.2 head gasket to match the heads, but with the proper bore size for the 2.0 bore.

The normal head gaskets for the 2.0 will block coolant ports on the 2.2 heads.

I have the 97 single port heads. These are phase 1 IIRC. So I would get HG's for this setup from Cometic? Just with the correct bore size.

  5. This is what Im thinking....I have a pair of 2.2 heads that are ported, new valves, springs, seals, phenolic spacers and Deltas. Will these heads bolt up to the 2.0 block? Id probably be running small boost sometime in the future. Is this a good idea, or no? What kind of problems might I be looking at? Mainly looking for a short block that I can rebuild and use my 2.2 heads and intake manifold with.

  6. 96-98 2.2 heads are single port.

97-98 have solid (screw type) lash adjusters. That's the only difference. 2.2 heads are otherwise the same from 90-98.

So the valves will be the same no matter the year? What about the 99 2.2? Does that engine have the same valves? Just curious. These heads do have the solid lash adjusters. Cool. As long as the valves and other parts are the same im good to move forward. Thanks for the info Fairtax!!

  7.  Hey everyone Im back. Had a problem with connecting to the site. Couldnt access for the last few months. Anyways I bought a used EJ22 that is supposed to be a 97 MY. It does have single port heads, but that doesnt mean its a 97. Im rebuilding the heads and need a couple new intake valves, valve seals, and springs. Already have the Deltas :) I took the numbers off the block, from the drivers side where it bolts to the trans, and called the dealership. They couldnt tell me and they even called subaru and still couldnt tell me. So how do I determine the year? I need to get these parts so I can finish the heads. Any help would be appreciated!

  8. What you are describing is lapping, not grinding.  Good for freshing up old vavle seats.....but won't cut it for seating new.  No matter how much compound you use.

Grinding is done with a special tool/bit that matches the seat and valve......but doesn't do them "toghether".  It's got a guide rod that slips into the valve guide and then grinds the seat while slipped over said guide rod, ensuring the centering.

If you need new vavles installed I would recommend having them installed by a machine shop that can truely "grind" the new valve and seat to the proper match.  It's a real downer to put a "new" engine toghether and have it suffer missing and poor compression.

. Thank you! I guess this is the info I was looking for. Wouldnt want missing and low comp! I'll take it to a machine shop then.
  9. Hey everyone I have question on a valve job. Doing a valve job on a pair of 2.2 heads, 97 single port. Both intake valves in # 3 combustion chamber are slightly bent. The piston tops have no indication the they came in contact with the valves. I'm wondering what would cause this? Obviously these two are being replaced, but I still need to grind the seats. Since I can't use the bent valves to grind the seats will using the new valves to grind the seats be ok? Plus would the bent valves have caused any issues with the guides? I'm installing some deltas, and putting these heads on a rebuilt block so I want to make sure its gonna be all good. Thanks for any advice!

  10. If you are just replacing the cams, all you'll need are new cam seals, sealant and assembly lube

Probably valve cover gaskets and maybe new grommets for the vc bolts.

If you are dismantling the valve train then add valve lapping materials.

An accurate torque wrench as the cam bolts are very low torque.

    Patience

    O.

Im replacing springs, retainers, cams, seals, valve seals. Not sure if I need new lifters.
