  1. I'm 50/50 on reman'd axles. Replaced my LF last year, and it blew up on me a few days later. I just had the RF replaced about a month ago and redid it this weekend because it was shaking so badly.
  2. Sorry about that. It's a 2.5L Phase I, DOHC...'98 Leg GT. Gunk and bubbling in the res. and the test for hydrocarbons was positive. I gather that means it's an internal HG. I'm sure I'm showing my ignorance by asking this, but will they replace both sides, or am I confusing the internal with the external HG? Thanks for the help so far.
  3. I know this has been covered ad-nauseum, but I have a couple quick things to clarify. Blew a head gasket (or a least discovered it today). Called a mechanic friend who suggested contact the dealership and ask about the "conditioner" before sporting for the tear-down. The guy at the dealership said they've had some luck stopping leaks w/ the conditioner. However the Phase I&II FAQ says very clearly that it does NOT. What's the word, is it even worth trying? Also, while I'd like to give my friend the business, everybody says to go to a specialist. He's done the job before, but I'm not sure that makes him a specialist. Is being a competent mechanic not enough?
  4. Thanks for the help everybody (PAezb, thanks for the link, not sure how I missed that one). A quick ODBII confirmed it was the vehicle speed sensor. Ordered the part from Jason...nice guy, very helpful.
  5. I thought they stopped using cables after '96...or do you mean electrical connection?
  6. '98 Legacy GT, 2.5, 5 Speed My speedo died on me on the way to work this morning. I had the cruise set and all the sudden the car stuttered, the speedo sorta flapped back and forth, then hit bottom and stayed. My cruise, speedo and odo no longer work...I can't be sure about the CEL cause it's been on and off for months, but it's on now. I plan on getting the code check this afternoon. Is this enough info to determine which of the 2 VSSs died on me, or do I need to get the code checked to be sure? Is there anywhere to get a new one for cheaper than dealer price? It looks to be a pretty easy swap, but is it something I can do w/ basic tools? Do these pants make my butt look big? Thanks
  7. Gas mileage is down a bit, and it runs a bit rough in the morning, just at first. color_blind: I had a feeling you'd post and tell me the cat is toast. What are the ramifications of running w/ a burned cat? Also, I've only replaced the plugs and wires, nothing else. Any suggestions on where to score a coil? Is this a necessary OEM purchase or can I go for a refurb or aftermarket part? Should I go ahead and replace the plugs again too? 15000 miles on a set of plugs doesn't seem like much. Thanks for the help so far.
  8. 98 Leg GT, 2.5 Litre. I had a misfire code (cyl 3) about this time last year, as a result I replaced the plugs w/ NGK and the wires w/ OEM. I reset the ECU and hadn't seen the CEL until a couple weeks ago (and about 15k miles after the plug/wire swap). Being a slacker, I've let it go until last week when I got the errors checked at Autozone. They guy read misfires on cylinders 3 and 4 and a P0420 catalyst inefficiency code. He said the P0420 was probably a result of the misfires and to address that first. I reset the ECU tonight, but I feel certain the light will come back. I think so because occasionally when the engine is cold and I'm on the interstate, the CEL flashes briefly before going back to solid. I've gone through numerous threads regarding these codes. Before I tackle the cat problem, I wanna take care of the misfires. Most problems seem to involve a single cylinder misfire, or a 1/3 misfire. Is there any connection between the 3/4 misfire, or am I double screwed? Any help is appreciated.
  9. I spent 3 months trying to find a Legacy GT Wagon w/ a standard trans. I finally found it on ebay of all places. The transaction was smooth as butter, and the guy let me test drive the car before I paid up. Might be worth a shot. Coincidentally, the guy was in Pittsburgh.
  10. All I can find is the plethora of different named/same inventory internet parts stores carrying Bosch plug wires. I'm a bit wary about the Bosch, given what I've read on here. Also, I can't afford to sport for the Magnecors. I've seen people recommend NGK plug wires, but I can't find them anywhere. I guess my other option is OEM. Does anybody have experience w/ the NGK before I go ahead and order OEM? Is 1st Subaru the place to go if I do order OEM? Thanks
