  1. Hi, I have an 05 outback with the 3.0 EZ30 D, R model. I just did a head gasket job, but now it's time to do the timing and I can't figure out the marks on how to do it. Everything I have read online is vary vague, IE, line up the timing marks to top dead center. Which marks are the timing marks???
  2. Well, I swapped intake manifolds but other than that it was smooth and a direct drop in. Motor knocked really hard though, so brought it back... Anyone want to buy a clean 2003 forester? Haha...
  3. Well, my EJ251 through a rod through the top of the motor. Pretty exiting. Managed to get an EJ253 out of a 1999 forester from the yard, only thing that is good. Is this a drop in fit where I trade off intake manifolds and go? Or is it a more involved process? Thanks!
  4. Howdy, I am looking to put cruise control into my 93 impreza. I plan on pulling the parts from a car at the scrap yard, but I have no idea what models or years are compatible. Can anyone lend assistance? I plan on pulling an EJ25D from the yard here sometime soon, so if I could do it all in one fell swoop it would be nice.
  5. From my research phase 2 has to go with phase 2, and phase 1 has to go with phase 1, without having to rewire or go the frankenmotor route. Not sure if the 99 is a phase 2 or not, I have read it is and is not. Someone else might be able to chime in. No clue on transmission. I have a ej251 that will work with that year. It will need the heads put back on it, but have them too. It's pretty easy taking the engine and tyranny apart and back together again.
  6. Hi there everyone. For those who don't know, a few weeks ago I swapped a 1995 ej22 (about 200k miles) out of a Legacy into my 1993 impreza L. Put in a 2.5rs clutch at the same time. I have developed a leak from my valve cover gaskets. I needed a car asap and lacked money to do a correct reseal. Also, the "plate of doom" was plastic on it, cracked at that, and I could not find a metal one locally and I needed the car on the road. So I put some gasket maker over the cracks. It has held up, or so I think so far. But I don't feel like having to change it in winter with 3 feet of snow, outside. So that should probably be done to. My questions: Is there a particular method for resealing these engines that needs to be adhered to? Should I buy anything specific? Anything else I should replace while I am in there? Should I replace the headgaskets (can it be done without a trip to the machine shop?)? I have been reading about Delta cams and how they make life awesome. This car is my daily driver, so I do like good gas mileage, but power is also important too. I have heard that 220's (It uses this kind right?) are the best option. I am new to this mechanical world though so can anyone tell me exactly what cams are going to do? HP gains, Mpg gains/losses, anything else they do? I appreciate the help!
  7. So in taking out the 1.8 in my 93 impreza L and replacing it with the 2.2, I could not get the 2.2 in. It was in, but just lacking a quarter of an inch. So pulled the engine to examine what was going on. After alast ditch effort before just going inside and crying myself to sleep, I looked at all the holes. And low and behold, in one of the holes, the index/allignment pin was stuck in there from the last engine. Enter punch and hammer. Beat that sucker out. Mine was in there really tight. I hit it so the pin came out the back, tranny side. Thought I would share for all those who are having troublesome engines not going in. Could save you hours of monkeying around.
  8. So I have a 1993 impreza L. It has no roof rack. I want a roof rack. Is it possible and/or has anyone put a roof rack from other 90's imprezas on an impreza that didnt come stock with one? I don't want to go ahead and buy the roof rack to put it on and not work. I plan on using said roof rack for stuff like, Snow boards, kayaks and other stuff that might end up scratching the roof which I don't want. Thanks
  9. Hi everyone, I got the job done. Swapped in a ej22 and threw a 2.5rs clutch in it too. Thanks for the help, I wouldnt have been able to do this without your help!
  10. Got the engine out. It is a 24 spline. The clutch o.d. is just below 8-1/2". Is this the standard awd size? If not can I swap in a awd clutch flywheel and maybe starter?
  11. tried adjusting the cable but to no aval. Helped in regards to the pedal being depresed more when clutch engages howevr it is still slipping while driving. Not as bad I can get going faster but I'm prob gonna pull the engine today and post the clutch flywheel info here.
  12. Hi thanks for more of the information, but I did not get a bugeye, i bought a 93 impreza which I will be swapping a 2.2 into.
  13. Hi everyone. I just bought a 1993 impreza L, 5mt 1.8L AWD. There is pretty much no clutch, it engages only when the pedal is all the way out and slips really bad whilst driving. I was looking at new clutches but I stumbled upon a few posts mentioning early 1.8L awd's having a fwd clutch. Can I put a regular 1.8/2.2/2.5 clutch in it and not have to worry about it? Or will I have to put in another 1.8? Any way to tell if it has this "odd" clutch in it? I was thinking about using a 2.5 rs clutch due to it's better specs, clamping force and whatnot. Resurfacing the flywheel because it is lighter than the others, stock. The 1.8 is only a temp motor, 2.2 is being dropped in eventually. I can't find any posts elaborating on the 1.8 clutch differences just the people have ran into trouble. Thanks
  14. Thanks for the information everyone! I ended up not getting the bug eye. I bought a 93 impreza L awd 1.8 today though. I will be swapping in a phase 1 2.2 eventually but I need to get this one running and driving first. The clutch is shot, hardcore. Foot off of the pedal before it engages and slippage while driving. So I will be doing a clutch/flywheel job first and run it in the 1.8 for a while. I will be asking a question about this in a separate topic. 1. For the 2.2 swap, I have read that I just swap the intake manifold and it's a direct swap. Is this correct? 2.Anything else that needs to be done? 3. Do the 1.8 and 2.2 flywheel weigh the same and if the 1.8 is lighter should I use that instead of the 2.2? (will ask this question in other post) Thanks again!
  15. Thanks for the welcome! Funny story on the wheels situation. I was driving a MK3 Supra, but the gas mileage is killing me and I need to start looking for a set of winter/work wheels so I'm actually looking at buy an impreza tomorrow. It is a bugeye, with a popped headgasket that I want to transplant a 2.2 into
  16. Ahhh, okay, so probably be best to use a phase 2 one then. Thanks! Can I use the same flywheel from 2.5 on the 2.2?
  17. I have been doing some looking around and I am a little confused and have some questions. I am looking to buy an 02 impreza with an ej251 with a blown headgasket, oil in coolant and white smoke out of exhaust. I would like to swap in a 2.2. This won't be my first engine swap. Whichever engine I get will be coming out of the junk yard. I want the 2.2 because of the better gas mileage, and I don't want to have to deal with changing out a 2.5 headgasket. 1. Does the engine ej22 have to be phase 2? 2. I have read that I will need to keep the 2.5 intake manifold. Do I tranplant in the 2.2 sensors and stuff into the 2.5 manifold? If I have to use the 2.5 sensors and stuff on the manifold will I still get 2.5 gas mileage or will it automatically adjust to the 2.2? 3. I have read that I may need to change the cam and crank sensors. Are those internal sensors where I will have to break the engine down and get more gaskets or external and just swap? 4. Will it use the 2.5 wiring harness? 5. Do I need to swap ECU and if so will the 2.2 plug right in place and function with the 2.5 manifold? 6. Anything else? It will be going into a NY car, so I can't throw a check engine light in order to get it inspected.
