  1. Look, if your in a situation were you can spend the money to get it fixed, get er done, if you cant spend the money yet, just make sure you check the oil and dont let it get too low. If you do that you will be fine. I have a 93 legacy 2.2 oil burner/leaker and I put on 20k on it- since febuary. I have to add about 3 quarts a week with the miles i drive. I hope to get it fixed soon, but its doing fine. Just check the oil...
  2. Hello, my throwout bearing is making noise and my timing belt and water pump and gaskets need to be replaced, I am thinking about pulling the engine and doing the work on it and replaceing the clutch and throwout bearing... My question is what is the best clutch to use and where do I get one and how much? My car is a 1993 subaru legacy L AWD Wagon, ej22 engine, sohc I off road the subie and go through some snow every now and then... I drive the car 180 miles a day and need to get on it, as in drive like hell... (denver driving) the current clutch slips a little bit. any ideas?
  3. well i guess i am going to try and drive it and listen for the noise to change and hope for the finances for my 93 subaru legacy 5speed 2.2 wagon to come through quickly... buy another subaru or work on this one outside in the cold... hhmmm, i wanted a 5 speed anyway
  4. Ok, given all of the above, with it being the flex plate, and the head gaskets are prob gone, do you guys think i should park it, or could i get by driving it for work, (about 130 miles a day) until the 16th of febuary... about 1000 miles... it has good compression, and a visual inspection of the flex plate didnt look bad... let me know, im in a pickle here... (also i can be 30 miles from my house for the tow truck)
  5. i will be doing the work my self. I have the engine puller to pull the engine out with no problem. I think i am going to buy a 93 legacy 5spd and then take my time doing this job. I always wanted a 5 speed and then i could sell this one, or keep it as a backup...
  6. so about how many hours and how much would this job cost? should i pull the motor and leave the tranny since i have to do a head gasket job? anything else i should do besides timing belt/water pump?
  7. sorry, it has 183000 miles on it. I had an issue with the radiator cap about 2 months ago and it got pretty hot, just about to the red line. i went through alot of water then. Also, its never been over filled with oil. I drive about 150 miles a day and this is the first issue i have had with it since the over heating issue. Before the noise it would however hesitate in the range of 2-4 grand of rpm it would drop 200 rpm real quick and sometime it would do it a few times in a row.
  8. Hello, Yesturday when i was driving my car I noticed a wierd noise sounding like the hydrolic lifters only alot more severe... It only knocks from 1000 to 3000 rpms and expecally under load. I checked the oil in a parking lot and saw that it was low. It took 2 quarts to fill it up. So in 1 week i went through 2 quarts of oil. I filled it up then drove it home (about 50 miles) still making the noise. Checked the oil again, 1 quart low... Took it to a local subaru specailist and they listend to it in the parking lot then brought it up on the lift. after looking at it for about 20 minutes they pulled it out and said that I had 2 problems... A blown head gasket, and some plate is about to sheer off the torque converter. They said that the exhaust was leaking into the antifreeze. Now when this happens i thought that antifreeze would leak into the exhaust creating white smoke. My antifreeze level wast too bad, the overflow was empty but the main radiator was ok. So.... i was wondering if anyone had any ideas.
  9. well i needed a car and i wanted one quick, so i bought a 1990 subaru legacy ls with the 4eat awd with power/manual mode. I figured it would be nice for the traffic jams I am always in, service tech, denver co. trex is fun... anyway... after 3 months of having it i wish i would of got a 5mt instead. the tranny i have is nice with the manual mode that helps with the snow, and also off roading on colorado trails but it lacks low speed low rpm power and sucks the gas down. the 4eat uses bigger fuel injectors, or fuel injectors that inject more gas... (the part number is completely different and price difference of 30$ for new ones) Just like any auto tranny, they aren't as reliable as a manual. The home mechanic can change a clutch with no prob but cant rebuild the auto tranny. a rebuilt tranny from autozone for my car costs $2700, more than i paid for the car. The manual tranny isn't avalable because as long as you know how to drive stick, they dont go bad. The old GL series would have 2nd gear sync row issues but i havent heard that with the new one. When my tranny goes out, i am doing a 4eat to 5mt conversion since the car is paid for and i have a bunch of money in wheel bearings and other parts. I can get the parts to do a 5mt for about 700 where as the 4eat is 2700...
  10. i drive car for work today... and it never did it... did it last night when i shut the car off... now, will it do it again tomorrow
  11. I have a 1990 subaru legacy ls with the 2.2 and 4eat tranny with power/manual modes. Lately when i have been driving the car i have noticed a lag all of a sudden at highway speeds. i will watch the rpms and i will notice the engine will drop about 100 to 200 rpms quickly... kindof like someone pushed in the clutch on a manual tranny Today I checked the wires, coils and such, replaced the fuel and air filter, pvc valve, and also gave it an oil change. Today it was doing it like 3 or 4 pulsating times. I can always regain the rpms but its kindof a pain out here with some mountain driving or denver driving. I also notice it on normal driving, anytime the car is at 3000 to 4500 rpms The car is not throwing any codes and will do the same thing in manual mode, doesnt do it in power mode, but thats hard to get the car into that... I cannot drop the rpms by verying the gas that fast... I have not changed the timing belt since i have owned the car, bought it last year at 159,000 now at 180,000. any ideas?
  12. also make sure that the car has had a 4 wheel alignment lately and the tires are in good shape. if you have a manual button, use it for snow/ice driving
  13. well it all depends on what tranny you have... I think everyon here is correct about the manual tranny. I havent seen anyone post anything about a 4eat with manual/power mode on them. If your subaru has a manual button on it then that is the way you help lock your 4wd in. Under snowy or icy conditions without the manual button pushed in the subaru I have doesnt grip as well. When i put it in manual 2nd, i can go through anything.
  14. Does anyone know if it is possible to connect to the ecm using a laptop to control ignition timing and 4wd on a 1990 subaru ls auto?
