  1. I don't quite understand why the bolt would loosen, we have owned our Legacy for about 5 years and no problem until Saturday night. Luckily it happened while my quite large stepson was driving it and he was able to drive it the mile or so back to the house with arm power alone. The harmonic balancer doesn't appear to be damaged either from flopping about or the rubber deteriorated so I am going to put it back on with loctite 242 on the bolt and torquing it down to about 140 pdft. I'm thankful for USMB, you guys have saved me a gob of money by posting simple fixes.
  2. I hope you guys are right, I'm going to try Loctite 242 and smokin' that bolt on there really tight and get on with the rest of my life.
  3. Maybe fixed at zero dollars and not much labor. Here's how I did it, thanks to "Woods Wagon" (4 Oct 2007), I held the lever up so I could get a decent view, took a small pair of needle nose pliers and a small pair of forceps to get the remainder of the button and the tiny broken bits out. While the handle is pulled up, grab the rod with the pliers, give it a slight pull, and it will stay up on its' own. Then I put the spring back in and screwed the button back on and gave it an extra couple of twists with the pliers but didn't get it honking tight. Works as advertised thus far but knowing that I can modify something else to work instead of buying a "new" old button or a handle from a scrap yard or ebay if it breaks again is comforting. Any Subie owners round my neck of the woods? I would like meeting some people who appreciate the little beasties.
  4. Thanks for that post DerFahrer, it will help me if I have to remove the console from my Legacy.
  5. Like your no dollar fix! I don't understand how the button can come off in the first place. Mine doesn't look broken and I can't find any other pieces of it lying about. I wouldn't think that they can just un-screw themselves.
  6. Never saw that before. The wife was going to let the car roll forward a bit and when she pushed the release button it came out in her hand. Appears, to me, to be unscrewed but I could be mistaken. Now, no "clicky clicky" , so the parking brake doesn't work at all. I haven't figured out how to take the console apart so that I can have a peek at what might be the matter but I suspect PART of the problem is that the rear brakes need some attention. Any ideas?
  7. We have a shot at a 2005 Legacy 2.5 GT limited for 10K at the dealer where we bought our '93 Legacy. It's a gorgeous car, absolutely. I trust this guy which makes him the first used car guy I've ever trusted but when it comes to forking over 10K I have some reservations. What specifically should we look for/at to determine whether it would be a good deal or disaster in the making. We are still noobs when it comes to Subies so your input and opinions are very much appreciated.
  8. Wow, that little bugger is hard to get at if you're not fairly flexible. It would be a snap if I could figure out how to get the lower portion of the "dash surround" out of the way. Doing it with one hand and no light is really fun! Well, it's in there and functions proper. I hope that fixes the intermittent problem. By the way the Car Quest p/n for that relay is: 56-1692.
  9. We bought our first Subaru, a '93 Legacy sedan, a couple of years ago and we like it. Actually my wife likes it better than I, I'm old and not as flexible anymore so getting in and out is rough on the hips and back. However once I'm in I love driving it especially since I got shifter bushings installed. We have had had a few problems but considering the age and miles; not so bad. Currently I need to replace the front struts (replaced the rears this past spring) and fix a couple of irritating intermittent electical problems. One is the radio speakers, sometimes they work; sometimes they don't and the other is the heat and A/C blower has decided it will work whenever it wants to as well. I read a post from 2011 "Intermittent blower" and I think that will help me out a bunch but will take any tips I can get. All in all I like the little beastie enough to consider looking for a wagon, Forester, or Outback to replace my aging Crown Vic police cruiser.
