  1. Excellent. You all are the best! I thought these things were going to be a fortune.
  2. Hi all, My fuel consumption has been running a bit high and my check engine light came on. I checked it out and it says that both o2 filters are dead. Could this be the cause of the higher consumption? And, how much do these cost to replace? Thanks - you all have been very helpfull to me in the past. Gideon.
  3. Thanks guys. I'll bring it to the shop on Monday. These were good descriptions of possible causes.
  4. I tried pinching the sides - won't come out. Either I am an idiot or this thing is jammed.
  5. My 96 legacy shifts real hard when going from idle to about 20-25 mph. It really thuds into next gear. I've heard that the Legacy GT has one of the hardest shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. I read that one on cartalk.com I think it's just inherent in the Subaru line.
  6. Ugh, were at 8 degrees and snow piling up. I'll do it as I warm up the car when I head home. Boy do I love driving my Subaru in the snow and mud and rain and sleet but not on sunny days
  7. Yeah, I can't possible make repairs to it at this point. I sneak a peak at other people who have my model SUbaru and Outbacks - most have this problem. 96 models have it pretty bad. I tried pulling from a few junkers but if it's an east coat car it has the same rust pattern. I tried ordering the part from a junker on the westcoast but they wanted to send me the entire rear hatch. In my studio apartment I share with girlfriend and greyhound dog - you know.
  8. And seems to go on and off intermitently . Is this due to the temperature outside? When I test the brakes before I begin driving, If I've just turned the car on in this cold weather, the brakes will not depress all the way. I just wait until the car is warm and the brakes operate normally. So why doesn't the brake light turn off? It does after some number of starts but then it stays on again. This is for a 96 legacy.
  9. I have a 96 legacy. I looked at the manual and it looks simple enough but when I go to do the deed the bulb just will not come out. The manual doesn't do a good job telling me how to replace the bulb and there a "push" marked on the piece holding the bulb. What do I do here? THanks for any help you can provide. I kinda feel stupid asking but I gotta change the bulb.
  10. The timing belt was replaced. In fact, they said the timing stretching is part of what caused the problem. They replaced quite a number of parts but I did not get the old parts back. I didn't even think of that. What should I be asking of the mechanic I normally go to? I now understand what the key/woodruff thing is (thank you very much). Should I have them check to see if the other parts on the list were in fact replaced? The whole thing happened pretty fast and I just wasn't prepared to ask the proper questions.
  11. This used to happen to me a lot. I was told by a Subaru tech that it takes something like 15-30 starts for the light to go off.
  12. The whole panel on my rear hatch is rusted and in bad shape. I have to bring the handle back into position because the spring no longer works. I'd love to replace the part but I can't seem to find it here.
  13. Hi all. THis is my first post here. Here is what happened to my 96 Legacy 2.2L. The last repair before my water pump went was to have the crankshaft pulley replaced in September. About two/three weeks ago I was driving in upstate NY and my waterpump went, the engine overheated, etc. I called AAA, the tow truck guy looked at the problem and said he wasn't comfortable working on it - that it would be better to take the car to a dealership. Dropped the car off on Friday night and heard back on Monday. They replaced the water pump, thermostat and associated parts for a total of $756.58. I thought this price was excessive but I was stranded. They told me, and this is reflected on the invoice, that the crank pulley was loose and this damaged the "woodruff" and that the "key crank sprocket" was jammed on the crank. I have tried in vain to search these parts and/or problems with no success. Are these guys playing me? Are these actual parts and is this an actual problem??? Did they over charge me? Wasit appropriate that the AAA guy tow me to the dealership? I am taking the car back to the mechanic who changed my crankshaft pulley to discuss this but I just don't who to trust. Looking to some folks on the board to help me determine if I was ripped off by the dealership. Thanks so much.
