  1. 1999 legacy obw.

    194k, auto.

I have owned this car about a year, and I have not had to change stuff much. The big copper cable were corroded, and I have flushed all the fluids. Two days ago, I drove the car about forty miles on the highway, then turned it off for a few hours parked in the sun. When I came back to it, it took around five seconds to start up, a little long. Then I drove home, got out, then got right back in, it started right up. Then after that trip I parked it on the street in the sun for a whole day. This morning i cranked for 10-15 seconds before it caught. It has been hot here in Denver, but I wouldn't call it unseasonal. What should I look at first. It is parked in the shade while I run to work for a few hours, so we will see if that makes a dif. Thanks everyone!

  2. I do about 5-10k per change, but go more on the color and if I want to add the half quart or do a whole change. I use Mobil1 full syn, and usually add a little of the Lucas sticky stuff, subbing half a quart on the 2011 forester and a whole quart on the 99 leggy. The leggy is weeping oil from seals and the tranny, so I'm trying to slow that a little. I have changed the tranny fluid recently on the 99 as well. Both drive great, but want the most life out of both of these.

  3. So we bought this baby second hand with the hitch receiver installed, but as far as we could tell it didn't have the wiring. I had been tempted to buy the box several times but hesitated. So I got bored one day and decided to pull all of the trays out of the back cargo area, and lo and behold a factory trailer wiring harness still in the plastic bag sitting next to the spare. So now it's up to me to figure out the routing for the wires out of the passenger compartment for connecting to the trailer. The wires after the converter box has a boot that will fit in a knock out under the spare, but that leaves the wires sticking out ready for road rash. Drill a hole? Am I missing something? Thanks!

  4. Great thread so far. I have a follow up question about a 1999 legacy outback with 194xxx, I bought it 4k ago with non-working ac. I have charged it with the parts store stuff with leak detector and it worked for about a day. Obviously there is a leak, but I can't find it.... Should I do the procedure above: hoses, orings, charge, profit? Colorado gets hot in the summer....

  5. I drove through a drive-thru the other day and realized my driver window button didn't work. It was popped out a bit from the rest and didn't move up and down correctly, but more importantly the window didn't budge. I ended up taking the plate of the switches and saw smoke coming out of the switch when the car was turned on. I pulled a small metal piece out and the smoke ended. All good so far, but now I'm wondering what happened and if there is a fuse for the windows. Also should I junk yard this or will it just happen again?

PS, I love my subie, but also the community. I have been kept busy fixing things since getting this car (without a title) but couldn't have done it without this forum and love every minute of it

  6. The capacity is 12 qts. when filling a new transmission and torque converter. 8 qts. for a full fluid change. Also, considering what you're telling us, I suggest you also drain and fill the front diff. DON"T use 90W in a Subaru! Use 70W85 or whatever lower multi grade there is. They keep changing the weights: it's hard to keep up.

Dexron 3 is what's indicated for a Subaru ATF, incidentally.

  7. Sorry for the show reply. It is a 1999 legacy outback with 193xxx on it so I'm looking to get the most out of it. A little off the zmax topic, but the car has some hard shifting, a blown trailing arm bushing and I'm assuming blown struts. I recently acquired this case so I have no info on history, it didn't even come with a title. I love to work on this car and may even rebuild the engine if I have trouble down the road so based on the response so far I should just leave it alone and do regular maintenance... Right?

    Once again, thank you everybody!

  8. OK, so I did it. Drained almost 7 quarts of black atf and replaced the spin on and filled with 7 quarts of red fluid. For clarification, I have a 2.5. I was very ssurprised to drain so much fluid, but I did need to pop out to the parts store and left the plug and filter off so it could drain. What is the total capacity of this tranny? How many more times should I do this? Should I change the filter each time? Thanks so much for all you guys help!
