1987 EA82 carbureted
Having a difficult time extracting the broken bolt. I can't get a good look at it and I'm trying to avoid putting it back together with only 2 bolts in the camshaft cog and rolling the dice... Any advice? Without pulling the front end off, preferably. I need to get it on the road ASAP.

Okay... I have (had) everything back in place for reassembly, and I broke one of the bolts for the passenger-side camshaft cog. Now it looks like I need to get new hardware and extract the broken bolt from the camshaft. Always something...

Battery is dead. Although, I might be able to get a jump from my roommate later.

Finally getting around to this... I can't get the crank pully off and bumping the starter isn't an option. Any ideas? Just keep trying?

Is the kit you're speaking of the one that's going for $1K + on ebay? For that money, I'd rather do an EJ swap.

I've heard that about the water pump. I'm assuming if you're from NJ that your advice about leaving the covers off isn't a bad idea for the PNW. What is this "TOD" of which you speak? Tick Of Death? I'm new to Subaru, and I'm definitely not mechanically, or technically inept. That being said, I need to to be able to do the work on nothing more than jackstands, outside. Is it doable?

Turns out that I broke the timing belt. The mechanic quoted me ~$650 to repair it. He also mentioned that the oil pump may need replaced, too. I'm probably going to just bring it home and either replace the belt myself or look into an EJ swap. What do you think?

1987 EA82 carbureted
Driving up to Wahtum Lake this afternoon and the car died. No prior indication of anything wrong. The car was running absolutely fine. I was just cruising along the paved forest service road. I crested a small hill, and saw a small branch across the road. I downshifted, 4th to 3rd (did not overrev), saw that the branch had already been run over and was broken. I pressed the gas pedal to proceed and no throttle. I downshifted to 2nd, tried it again and realized that the engine had stopped. I tried restarting while rolling. Plenty of cranking, no start. Rolled to a stop, tried again, same. Again, no indication of any problem, car was running as normal (not great, but good), and I didn't overrev. I opened the hood to a faint smell of oil. Faint like a dirty engine smells when it's hot. I opened the air filter to an emulification of what looks like oil and gasoline coming from one of the tubes in the air filter canister. Did I blow the head gasket?

Grill swap
Are the front corners in good shape? I would at least like to get a PS headlight. If the corners hold the bulbs properly (mine don't), I'd be interested in those, too. Also, if you have some random dash parts (HVAC controls, radio bezel, fog light switch, working dash clock, etc.) could you take a couple pictures of the instrument panel (and surround) and the lower console?

Grill swap
Gotcha. Thanks again. I'm planning on rewiring the headlights to have the outer pair hi/lo and the inner pair hi-beam only. So if my car isn't red and the front end isn't wrecked, you don't have the parts? ;-)

Grill swap
Thanks for the responses. When you say "light fixture," do you mean the headlight buckets, or is there more? I don't have a DL handy for comparison and still haven't gotten a repair manual. Also, can I use any EA81 or EA82 with the correct setup as a donor?

Grill swap
Hi there. I'm interested in swapping my 87 GL wagon from composite headlights to the 4 rectangle headlight setup. Do I need to swap radiator core support or can I just get the grill, buckets, and lights and bolt them on?

New guy here
I just got it back from the shop. New plugs and wires, filters, oil, gear lube (apparently, there was NONE in it), and v-belts. Back in the day with Volkswagens, we had this incredible resource called a Bentley manual. Does anything comparable exist for Subaru? The Haynes and Chilton manuals never really had the content of the Bentley. I'm excited to get into this car, and I need to get some stuff fixed in a hurry. It has no exhaust behind the (presumably clogged) cat, the passenger CV has no boot to speak of, and the passenger headlight could be the home of tadpoles. I'm heading to the junkyard soonish.

I'm probably going to try to find another stock carb and rebuild it to put on. Where is a good source for aftermarket exhaust systems? The wheels are only 13's. ????

After a bit more research, it seems that I have the carbureted EA82. As I understand it, EA81 is pushrod and mine looks OHC. I'm definitely not trying to get into engine swap territory right off the bat. Maybe after I get it closer to what I want, but right now I just want a well-oiled machine that I can get into the woods with.

New guy here
Hey there! Just today, I acquired a genuine 1987 GL Wagon 4wd! I've been waiting for this day for several months. I've been watching them lately and today I pulled the trigger. I have a faint history with 80's and 90's VW's, so a Subaru seems like a good fit. Plus, it will get me into the backcountry! I'm planning to give it a 4" lift and put it on 27" BFG's, and put all sorts of tubes around the outside (bumpers, racks, etc.). I definitely need to get some more power out of it, though. Any links to start with for general info regarding engines? EA81=carburetor right? See you around!

What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
I bought mine today 1987 GL Wagon 4wd. Needs some things. Planning to go +4" with 27" BFG's. I have lots of questions for everyone willing to listen. I'll be on the boards over time. See you around!
