I am not letting it get very hot a couple minutes running then shut it down restart then off restart then off, so far today it is starting right up but i have not tel it run. either does nothing not even a pop,i tried it a couple times, i can smell gas with the no start ,so maybe a no spark condition after it gets warm. im going out now to install the T-stat, Ill come back here, for your Opinion, i got to get the coolant system back together then clear the codes, i have a sears hand held scanner. thanks
  2. I reset the belt because the timing woodruff key,gear and pulley were chewed up. I replaced those parts. put on the T-belt and it started right up,i thought the no start problem was fixed. shut off and no restart. i thought the T-belt was jumping i reset it along with a good T-belt tensioner. it started right up,shut it of it restarted a few times then no start. several hours later before bed i tried it and it fired up. This morning i turned the crank by hand and lined up the timing marks ,they are correct, turned the key and fired right up. throttle response is good engine is not vibrating and appears good, i have to install the thermostat put the fans in and run the car.. previous owner said overheating after the cam seal change , i am pretty sure the HG are fine , they did not take the time to get the air out of the coolant system. i was looking in the Haynes book and a bad coolant temp censer could cause hard hot starts. and read on here that a bad cam censer could cause intermittent starts so i am thinking about whats next. Also the fuel tank filler neck has a whole in it, i have a new one but did not install it yet, previous owner black taped the hose i did not see it leak when i added gas to the tank, If the tank is sucking air could that create the no hot start problems ?   3. before bed i turned the key and she fire wright up, i am sure the timing belt did not jump and is correct. what would cause intermittent not start? thanks
  4. Reset timing belt several times in the past 2 days, it starts and runs . shut it off and no start reset the belt and it starts, here is the weird part i am 98% sure the T belt is rite. But what would make it not start, the last time i reset the belt it restarted about 10 times i said its fixed and took the dogs for a walk. tried it when i got home and no start. alld the pulleys woodruff key tiing gear and tensioner has been changed. I am stuck any help would be great. Thanks
  5. same thing with the 96 ej22 i am working on. previous owner took it apart to change cam seals put it back together and wont start. it will start after resetting the T belt. everything has been changed. I smell gas when its turning over. either in the intake does nothing. did you fix yours ? thanks

The crank was ground a little to get the exploded parts off at some point, looks like they tried to reuse old parts and the t-belt jumps a tooth, i got used suby crank gear and pulley.good ones tho. my local dealer has the woodruff key. Im going to fix it right . If the t-belt tensioner piston still moves after the pulley stop wobbling i will replace that. next is she said it was overheating, the kid did not get the air out. i am 98% sure the head gaskets are good.. and if that works out. the mounting bolts are mix matched for the t-belt tensioner,fans and timing covers. i hate to see the wrong bolts! i bought this car for $350 it is easy $2,500 car when i fix it. thanks
  7. where can i buy the correct crankshaft pulley key way for my ej2.2 ?. nappa had one that fit the slot but was to tall, i could grind it but i would like the right one. Thanks

THANKS the tensioner was replaced by the last kid it looks new i compressed it slow 2 times i just put it together again and its running. looking at he tensioner when the car is running the piston is bouncing around, this time the engine starts repeatedly but I will still change it and the pulleys and try again. if the key is half moon then the wrong one is in there becaise it has the top ground off. thanks

I just got this car and trying to figure out whats wrong. the owner sold it to me out of frustration. looks like some kid was in there and messed it up..96 legacy ej2.2 engine 115k miles i thought 127 but its 115. Any way. I reset the timing belt and it fired right up, was ticking i checked oil gees over 2 quarts low. put oil in turn key and no start just like before. I turn the crank bolt with a ratchet and line up the marks and they moved . the timing crank sprocket and alt belt pulley are wobbly the key way is boogerd up. IS THE KEY HALF MOON OR LONG SQUARE ? some one cut a 1/2 moon key to fit but its not right and ruined the gear and pulley. can any one post maybe a picture of what the key should look like ? The teeth on the crank gear look warn odd for a car with 115k but if the key is not right maybe premature were thanks
  10. im going to start a new thread, but i retime the belt and it fired right up mint. but the timing crank gear and pulley are messed up .
  11. Just bought a Subaru . With issues. Guy said to start it have to purge the full line . How , why. And what's wrong with it? Is the fuel line pressurized and is sucking air ? Thanks for the help !
  12. thanks for the quick help. I also have to put the belt on using the marks on the belt correct? something like 40 teeth on 1 side and 44.5 the other from the crank ? thanks

I bought a legacy with a ej2.2 it needs some work. great shape otherwise 127k miles The story i got when i bought it was. the cam seal was leaking, the boyfriend said hey i am going to fix it, supposedly the timing belt tensioner water pump was changed. puts it together and it rattles and overheats....... he messes with it some more. then get tired and sells to me. i change 2 timing belts on 2.2`s in the past but its been a wile. i takie it apart and here are pics. why would the crank be ground and the end . is this going to be ok ? also please look at the drivers cam pully looks off 1 or 2 teeth, also belt was not put on using the marks i think. THE KEYWAY ON THE CRANK SHOULD BE AT 6OCLOCK WHEN INSTALLING THE TB ? any insite would be great. thanks
