  1. Well, for those that don't know, the STi type RA geat set is the Homoligated FIA racing gear set for Subaru. That means it is what is used in all FIA group N rally cars around the world. These cars routinely put out over 300ft. lbs. of torque to the wheels and the gears never complain. Not saying the 6mt isn't stong, but the 5mt with the type RA gear set will take a whole lot of power.

The new Group Ns use the 6mt. And in group N i thought you really dident put out that much power, besids those guys are basicly always in dirt theres no traction to blow the trannie up. Look on Nasioc most will say about 275 whp is the max on RA gear sets.

  2. why?

I would post on http://www.subaru-svx.net there all obesed with SVXs and know about any thing you could imagine.

All the modle year SVXs are pretty much the same, 92 they dident have a speed limiter 144MPH tho :brow: and iam pround of that for mine. The svxs prety much slowly gained weight throught the time it was in production so genrally the leather 92 AWD will weigh less than a leather 97 AWD. The trannie wasent really improved in latter modles they just came without a screen in the auto cooloer which could clog and cause over heating problems, and the they came with a extra external fileter which should already have been put on a any SVX you buy, since there was a recall for it. In 97 suabru gave the SVX a diffrent grill which most people think made it look better and i agree and would buy one if i had some extra money and put it on my car. I think in 97 they reduced the width of the wheels .5 inches to 7 i think, or made the stock tires 215, instead of 225. The strut top mounts were improved on latter ones, i think 94 and later becasue the earlier ones would wear out faster and cause a thunk sound over hard bumps. Its worth getting one that has been taken care of becasue replacment parts are expensive and harder to find then some cars. They also started to paint the rear deck lid in latter years, not sure which year they started the diffrent paint cheme tho. The 97 are the most desirable to a colector, genraly lowest mileage, and better condtion becasue of the lower milage. If i were to get another one i would get a good contion 92, there cheap and basicly the same car as the newer ones with out the huge price.

When looking for a SVX i would definitly pay attention to:

1.Brakes they can warp, but this is due to the pads suposibley. Ive upgarded my pads to metal masters and they havent wapred yet.

2.The power sterring rack can go out, becasue of leaks so check for that. Mine has aleak out the HP line that i need to fix, it may jsut be a the low presure line and that is fairley easy to replace and is cheap tho so check.

    3. Rear wheel bearings go out fairly easy and are expensive to replace so check those.

    4. The trannie will start to slip becasue of over heating the fluid so check for slow shifts and a sliping trannie. Or one that just doesent feel good.

  3. The new 6mt is a very, very beefey trannie by far the beefist manule trannie that is stock from subaru, even a 5mt with the RA gear set cant come close to the 6my beefiness. I have read over on nasioc that a couple members say subaru has rated it 550 ft pounds of torq, and there are alot of 400whp+ STi with no trannie problems what ever to make that 550 ft pound of torq rating seem plasusable. If you want a drag trannie i wouldent go with the 6mt, the gear ratios are to close and you will be shifting to many times in the quarter, but if your looking at a track day, every day driver i would definitly go with the 6mt if you have the money, you can pick them up for about $5000 used in good contdtion. If you want a purpose built drag trannie i would maybe look into a built 4eat, its a extremely strong automatic stock, you just need to keep it cool, but if your draging it shouldent be a problem. If your going to be putting out a huge amount of power (over 300whp) and want the 5spd to hold it i would get a beefier gear set that the RA one and have the case reinforced because it spose to twist under alot of load, althought the brand new 05 5mt has a gridle to help with the flex. Ive heard that the 5eat is a very light weight trannie for a 5spd auto which scares me beacause you need weight to have a strong trannie unless using extremely exotic materials which i dought subaru did, and it shares the typical 4eat oiver heating problem under extended hard use so i would go with a built 4eat out of the autos its cheap and its been proven.

  4. Yes or not marketed the WRX as a fast car for launches. AWD does have alot of advantages, but it also puts alot more stress on the drivtrain which should be taken into account when building it. I think subaru shoiuld just put there 6spd, and r180 rear end into the turbo vehicles, and the 6spd could just use the VC center diff to keep cost down, it would add probley less than 1grand to the price of the car, but then it would have a unbeakble drivtrain.

  5. Exactly. When Ford sells an excursion, or when chevy sells a suburban, they tell you along with the tow rating, the 0-60 times. Does that mean that they are selling a race truck? No. It means that they are telling you how long it takes for it to reach 60mph, because apparently that impresses people, and it is a SELLING POINT. Any car sold, go search and i guarentee you can find the 0-60 times. So why the bitching. Subaru didnt sell the WRX as a drag car they simply told you what the car can do, and if it can go 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, then why not tell the consumer. Sure racing arround is not good for the car, but that goes for ALL cars. Subaru advertized, but it is COMPLETELY up to the consumer to know that dumping the clutch will hurt the car.

Besides why do you think on all television comercials, at the bottom it says, "Do not attempt, professional driver on closed course."

If someone blows up there tranny by racing, and complaion because it couldnt handle it, simply, they're stupid.

The thing is many sports cars have a drivtrain that can hanld the power the engine puts out and the possible streses from use. I bet if could be as violet as you wanted with a ford excusion for a 0-60 tme and it would last many more than the WRX. Since its a fast car subaru should of designed it for it would see in the world, they said it could go 0-60 in 5.4 secs thats a quality that it has, a point, they should also have a drivtrain behind it that can handle the 5.4 sec 0-60 time sicne they braged about.

  6. (must resist the urge to flame...............aghhhhhhhhh...............stupidity abounds..................................) if you think that Subaru it selling the WRX as a drag car then fine, go ahead and think that. but don't argue the retarded conclusion on the interweb, please. and the WRX tranny is not weak, its all from the drivers doing stupid stuff like this, I mean drop the clutch in any car that has the grip of AWD and see what happens.

    (ps DIAFT)

I agree but subaru shouldent of sold the WRX becasue of its 0-60 times. They should of sold it as a rally car, which it is.

  7. again...I've never seen a Subaru ad that touted it's "straight line" capability. Have an example? Every car that is sporty in any way has it's 0-60 times published. Read a car review in any mag however stoic and see if it isn't there. As far as Subaru changing the times, I think that is a red herring. They changed the US spec plans several times before the car appeared stateside...that isn't suprising, we'd been waiting for this car for a decade.

Well if every sprts car toughts it 0-60 time it should be able to ahndle it if you do it. Theres a diffrence between what a car mag syas is its 0-60 time and the time the company continuasly uses and brags about, to help sell the car.

This is from a subaru add for the WRX in the october 2002 sport compact car magazine, pg.49

"Earth shaking power. Ground Shreding traction. Be careful wherer you point it."

Further in the add. "The rusalts is 0-60 in 5.4secs, along with the ability to turn a twisted mountain road into your own personal roller coaster."

This add seems to really be pusing the traction and power of the WRX 2 key componets to a drag racer.

Another add december 2001 sport compact car pg 11-12.

"it dosent have a wing or a jet engine. But the subaru wrx definitly flies. while the all wheel drive helps fasten to your seat asphalt, the 227 horse turbo engine hurls you 0-60 in 5.8 secs"

This add also focusing on the 0-60 time subaru did push the WRX as a drag car.

  8. I have a lot of experience off-roading vehicles. Jeeps, Landcruiser, etc.

AWD vehicles are not made for this use. It is not a failure of the VC is is the way it works period. You will not be able to get three wheels spinning on a Subaru in a off-road situation. You live where it snows. Get your AWD subaru High centered and only one wheel front left or right will spin. Without a center diff lock this is a matter of physics.

The VC can transfer enough power to get the wheels to spin on both ends, i had my legacy high centered many times when i was off roading it and every time either all 4 wheels would spin, or 2 one fron one rear would. Its like a limited slip diferintal a lockler is beeter but a liitem slip can still transfer power.

If you have a limited slip differintal, it can lock the front wheel and back togher its simple physiscs.

  9. I thought the legacy turbo did the 1/4 mile in 14.1 secs while the WRX does it in 14.4secs. I think the new legacy was refined a huge amount and aculy has more potential that the WRX, The 2.5 liter is stronger thean the U.S. ej20t, and the susension while under dampended stock has more caster and i think some aluinum suspesnion pices. For a every day driver i would probley take the legacy its fast alittle larger quiter inside, and in my opinion looks better. Dosent the new legacy have the new hubs that the STi gets with stronger wheel bearings? Insuracne will probley be cheaper with the legacy to since there arent as many "spirited drivers" that crash them.

  10. Thanks Shawn W. Does anyone else have a opinion on whats wrong?

Tomaro iam going to to a very extensive search for a radiator leak form any where.

Hey whats that thing that regulates idle and always fouls up and has radiator fluid going through it. Ive cleaned it before not on this car, maybe thats leaking fluid into the intake maniflod?

  11. Subaru did advertise it as a drag racer when they saying in there adds in can go so fast in a stright line, they stated this in almost every add for the WRX, in many diffrent frazses. Subaru did publish its 0-60 time of 5.4 secs, many cars are underrated for this reason they may be able to shave of .5 secs off what the manufactor claims but that would put push the drivtrain over the limit, so they dont. Subaru did do this when the WRX first came out it was advertized as 0-60 in 6.2 secs which i bet did not dool out near as much abuse as the 5.4 sec run did that was done by car and driver. All iam saying was it was stupid of subaru to advertise the WRX can do something that is complety detrmental to the cars longevity, and now subaru is getting what they deserve, lots of warrenty calim on blown up trannmision from doing what the suabru advertized.

  12. I have to aggre the VC is not being over whelemed it needs more wheel spin to cause the VC to heat up enough to thicken up enough to spin the rear tires, along with the front. When i was really offroading a 1st gen legacy 5spd AWD it would spin 1 front 1 rear, it takes some time for the center diff to really harden up. The center diff was strong enough to back the car out up a 20 deggre hill, while 1 tire was in the air so its not weak, it just takes 1sec or 2 to heat up. The center diff never went out either and this car was abused before i got it, and it already had 220,000 miles on it. Driving a car with a VC diffs requires a diffrent dring style to use them you need to either spin your tires fairly fastly or not at all. Driving a auto sube is complety diffrent than a manule, it acts like a regualr locked center diff, which i prefer to the VC diff.

  13. Yes it does but how much longevity, is lost. Besides subaru published this number if it does push the drivtrain over the limit that subaru problem not the driver. Iam sure that the newer pickups would be able to tow there maxium trailer weight around with out that many problems, and if they did the dealers would replace the parts that broke. Besides this isent really affeting longevity, many people who only do a couple of very hard launches blow there trannie up. The drive train is to weak for how much power the WRX puts out, and how subaru advertises it as a drag racer.

  14. There is a big difference. Trucks are rated for a recommended towing capacity, not the maximum that they can tow. The 0-60 number is the fastest the car can accelerate, not the recommended acceleration.

Truck companies advertise there recomneded towing capacities, and you wont have your warrenty voided for going up to that weight. Subaru advertised that the WRX can go 0-60 in 5.4 secs, thats what they said it can do, sence they did that they gave the ar the feature, and it should be able to perform that feature with out problems, if subaru said the WRX can go 0-60 in lets say 7 secs then people who drag raced and knew they were running lower times should expect broken parts. If Ford said there trucks can pull up to 30,000 pounds in a add, people would belive them and probley use it to do that, and if they couldent do that then Ford would be getting some pretty angrey customers, and probley alot of law suits.

  15. Not Sube's responsibility.

If you regularly start from a standstill with over 3000rpm on the clock - nevermind the 5000rpm that really gets things moving - then your car ain't gonna last. No car will.

Porsche Turbos tend to twist and snap their drive axles during the sub-five-second launches that they put in the technical data. Is Porsche a weak car?

Drag racing doesn't prove much anyway, in my most humble opinion. I prefer to outrun challengers on the twisty roads.

Its is subes problem. They said the WRX can go 0-60 in 5.4 secs, they advertised this every were, so that is a service that car provides sence they advertise it, and since its a service the car provides it should be able to with stand this treatment untill it at aleast out of warrenty.

Trucks advertise that they can tow a certain amount and they can with out problems theres no diffrence. And just becasue Porsche does the same thing dosent mean its not a problem that Subaru and Porshe i guess share.

If Subaru dident want people to abuse the car drag racing, then why did they advertise it as a drag racer? I agree drag racing dosent seem like thatmuch fun, or that meuch a test of a well rounded car but subaru did push it.

  16. I have to agree if you plan on drag racing the WRX alot, you need to plan on a new gear set (STi), and a new rear end (upgrade r160 or r180), with upgraded axels all around (drive shaft shop). If you want to launch fast with the least abuse, i would definitly not drop the clutch, i would probley bring the car into the 3000-3500 RPM rang and let off the clutch while aplling gas to keep the car in its power band then go from there. I would rather have a roast clutch than a bad gear set. If your car is a 04 or newer subaru put a (device?) on the clutch hydralic sysem to keep people from droping the clutch on WRXs, so you may be able to drop the clutch with the affect of fastley letting go it go. This device suposibley has saved many trannies. The weak point of the WRX is the trannie, followed by the rear which dies with any wheel hop, then the axels right after the rear end.

The thing i hate about this, (it keeps coming up on every subaru fourm) is that subaru advertises the WRX as a drag car which gives people the idea that the car should be able to go 0-60 in 5.4 secs, and not kill it self while doing it. I think subaru is totaly to blame for this, and should be held accountable for there weak drivtrain, for what they advertise.

If i were you i would post on http://www.nasioc.com they have a huge, huge amunt of subaru enthusist that race there cars in every fourm of motor sports.

  17. It would seem that you may have a water pipe or intake manifold gasket leak, and a bad radiator. I recommend a leak down test on the engine and a radiator/cooling system pressure test be done to look for a coolant leak.

Also pull the codes on the car to find out why the CEL is on.

Hope fully, that would be really nice, but how would the water enter the engine, since its coming out the exhaust pipe. The radiator dosent leak fluid, thats the thing, and the car got hotter after i filled up the radiator. Ive checked around for hoses, but couldent find any bad ones.

I know legacy777 web page has info on how to check for codes on subies with obo1 does any one by chance have his web page book marked, i did but lost it in the reinstall of windows.

  18. Well my moms 91 legacy wagon probley has a slight blown head gasket, at 196,000 miles and its not becasue of poor enginearing its becasue of detonation, latley a check engine light has come up and its been having some detantaion, for about 2 months now. The main reason it wasent fixed was becasue of how busy we have been. The symtoms are white smoke at start up untill it warms ups. No bubles in the radiator which i had to put about 20 ounces of water in today. No chocalte milk oil, and the spark plugs all look good and all look the same. But today to really check for the blown head gasket i took it on a paper rought, on a very hilliy area at slow sppeds, and sure enough about half a hour into it, the temp started to go up. It only went to alittle less than 3/4 the way up, i turned on the vent to high heat, and drove it around at a higher rate of speed about 30 mph it went back down to normal and went the rest of the way with out incident. So what do you think? Is it blown, and if it is its very small leak, maybe stop leak could fix it? How hard is it to change ive done timing belts and a couple head gaskets on other cars, so it hink i should be able to do it. Could i do it with the engine still in the car, or should i take it out to do it? Also how what gaskets beside the head gaskets should i replace while iam in there? I jsut did the timing belt around 10K ago so that should all be good. Thanks

  19. My unlce lives in michigan were they use alot, alot of salt, he drives to work 5days in the week and uses his truck to get there winter and summer. I was amazed why his truck has basicly no rust on it when it was 10 years old and 200,000 miles, when i see 2 year old cars with rust holes in the fenders he said he just washeses it twice a week in the winter. He has owned many trucks/cars nad has never had a rust problem.

  20. I got off work early on Friday and was watching Unsolved Mysteries or something...and they where showing a street corner...BANG...Outback drives past.

Then, that night I was watching Cops (it caught my attention because it was from Pittsburgh) and they where in persuit of a early 90s Legacy Sedan. When they caught it and got the dude driving it, the cop sat down in it and noticed the car had no brakes...heh.

The best cops i ever saw was of a 1gen legacy wagon, the guy went down a dirt road with the cop chasing him, slid off the road with a decent lead. The cop was talking on his radio that the suspect got stuck in a ditch, then you see reverse lights and the legacy fly out of the ditch backwards. The guy then starts drivig down the dirt road and gets a decent lead, but runs into a plow in a field and he starts pushing it out of his way, then the cop t bones him so he couldent get away. It was great chase expecialy when the legacy comes back out of the ditch.
