  1. I have a 2003 Forester 5 speed (therefore no limited slip rear differential). So, with a regular differential in the back, and a regular differential in the front, does this mean that if one wheel in the front loses traction and one wheel in the back loses traction, then I have no traction? The reason I say this is that a regular differential will split the TRQ evenly, so if the wheel on one side goes to 0, then 0 goes to the other wheel. So for instance if both right wheels say are on ice (Assume near zero friction), then I'm not going anywhere. If I am wrong about this, please explain why.
  2. I bought my first Subaru (and first AWD) last month. A 2003 Forester X 5sp. As expected, I don’t notice much difference due to the AWD on dry pavement. I'm not quite sure yet if there's a difference on wet pavement for that matter. And the snow and ice are still a few months away…. But I was wondering if people could share their impressions of how one should drive a Subaru AWD under different conditions (rain, snow, ice), and what one could expect in terms of handling, general feel, and any other things that just might be "different."
  3. If you have experienced clutch stutter…. Whether the dealer fixed your problem or not, you should file a complaint with the NHTSA: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ That way if it is a systemic problem, then the manufacturer can be held responsible, thus helping current and future Subaru owners. You can also search through complaints, recalls, and TSBs at this site.
  4. It's actually pretty sleazy that they are charging for TSB's, You can get the free, as well as Recalls, and filed complaints here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/
  5. OK, the answer is: - In passive mode, the doors alarm will set automatically after one minute - Therefore to disable the feature, I want active mode. To put the car in active mode required that I remove the side sill cover on the driver’s side and DISCONNECT the white pole connector there. Seems to work fine!
  6. I have a 2003 Forester X with Keyless Entry and Security Upgrade. (Newer transmitter with oval buttons) I've noticed that if the doors are closed, the alarm will set itself after some period of time. Now the manual says the alarm will not set if the key is in the ignition, which is good. I've noticed also that the alarm will not set if I leave a door or the tailgate open. But… I've also noticed that on some occasions, after some unknown sequence of actions on my part, the alarm does NOT auto-set as described above. First, I don't like this auto-set feature (just let *me* set or no set the alarm), so would be interested in any way to turn it off. And second does anyone know exactly the sequences of events under which the alarm will or will not auto-set.? Also, and possible related, the manual mentions "Passive Arming," but does not really describe well what it means. It has something to do with having to use the manual lever to lock the doors. What is this and why would anyone want to use it?
