  1. So it still leaked oil from the rear main seal, but not a quart a week - so I rolled with it. However, since this was the first motor I had even disassembled this far I got extremely overwhelmed with the vacuum line nightmare and trying to get the hitachi carb back on. So, I just went the lazy route and put a Weber on it. While I was at it, I removed all the emissions junk (EGR etc) and blocked them off. This car is old enough to be emissions exempt in NC so I left off pretty much everything that didn't "need" to go back on.
  2. So I tackled the head gaskets in the car (didn't have a hoist at the time). This is how thrashed they were.
  3. The whole front end was trashed, and had like 2 inches of play in the steering wheel and wandered all over the place on the road. First thing I did was replace shocks, springs, tie rods, ball joints, did a 6-lug swap, and lifted it 3" with a 1.5" subframe drop. I bought the cheapest 15x7 wheels I could find and some 26"ish Yokohama Geolandars and threw them on (I don't like the stance; too little backspacing but I'll fix that later with some different wheels). I drove it with the destroyed head gasket for a few months until I got tired of going through a quart of oil per week. I also grabbed a Loyale grille from a JY (the stock one was missing a "tooth") and now she looks like this:
  4. I've been lurking these forums for a few years now doing minor tweaks to my car; figured it was time to post a thread about it. So I got my 86GL about 3 years ago from the original owner with 132k miles. It was bone stock and carbureted (still have the original window sticker). Had been in a couple minor fender benders, and had a disintegrated driver's side head gasket. The owner was just tired of spending money on it, so I bought it for $800. Only crappy picture I have of it when I bought it:
  5. They were seized in there pretty fierce. I got one out after battling with some vice grips. I'll take it in to NAPA and try to get something "close." Thanks guys.
  6. Dowel pins to mate EA82 engine to tranny are stuck in the old motor and I destroyed them trying to get them out; they need to be on the tranny side for my adapter plate. Does anyone know if these are still available from Subaru? Haven't had any luck so far looking through online parts diagrams for a part #. Thanks
  7. It's EA82. I have the hard lines that run across the subframe as well as the hoses that connect from there up into the p/s pump, all from the EJ. I'm sure I'll have to tweak them a tad to line up, just unsure which is pressure/return on this EA82 rack. Thanks
  8. Doing an EJ swap and also adding power steering (my GL has manual steering). On this rebuilt EA P/S rack, which is the pressure and which is the return (red plug vs black)? Thanks guys
  9. Thanks for the replies guys, kind of what I figured. Still trying to wrap my brain around it... I slept on it and the subframe route doesn't really make sense as it would just push the inside of the control arm down and the strut would maintain the same camber angle. Is that correct?
  10. Hey guys, I'm new around here so I will begin with the back-story. So recently I purchased my first Subaru, a one-owner 86 GL 4WD Wagon with 130k miles. It's in decent shape, with only a couple minor rust spots and was pretty well taken care of by the only previous owner (it came with a 3" stack of service records and even the original window sticker). I'd always been kind of a Jeep guy, and had recently moved on from my previous weekend beater of a 96 XJ so I was looking for something with some character for my next car, and stumbled across the GL and figured it would be relatively easy to keep running... Little did I know of the struggles of finding parts for these things... Anyway I digress... On to my question. Among the stack of service records and receipts that came with the car, I noticed an unfathomable trend of endless tire rotations and new tires... And when I got it home and started looking it over I noticed the pretty significant positive camber on both front wheels. After researching, I have come to learn that this is somewhat normal and a certain amount of positive camber is within specs for these things... But the tires that came on it are balding along the outer sides so it's due for a new set. I however, am not keen on throwing new tires on this thing every 5000 miles. My specific question is will a set of subframe spacers in the front counteract positive camber by pushing the lower control arm out? Or are camber issues corrected (I've learned this issues come about a lot while lifting these) only by offsetting the top strut perches with tapered blocks? Again, new to Subarus and I'm a fairly novice mechanic so if I'm way off base you'll have to forgive me. I may be able to post some pictures on my PC later if it would help. Thanks!
