  1. cool find.. I found a 91 loyale sitting in a ladies yard under snow..only the top showed.. I only recognized it as a Roo because I saw the "Loyale" symbol on the side from where the snow was plowed.. I talked her into selling it for 200 bucks.. a month later... and the "blown tranny" shifts smooth as a babies tush, and I can go through 18 inches of wet snow with the 4WD kicked in.. good luck on yer' acquisition.

  2. Hey! Within 30 minutes of getting home I posted your answer. cut us some slack! :) I happen to have an FSM and a tranny sitting out of the car.

    Check your trhread for details.

    TTFN!

Jeez, you guys are sensitive.. I did cut you slack.. I was the one who was impatient, and acknowledged that. thank you and I appreciate all the feedback. I was just getting no help from my manuals, and you all have hands on practice

  3. Yikes!!!

    Well now, shame on us.

Will any other member join me in this

    BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRaaaTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

to this gentleman that finds us derilict as we did not answer in his time frame.

I know you are an "elite" member.. rest assured, I meant no harm.. BUT I am DESPERATE!! so, I needed to try to put some fire under your hide, that's all. I thought you were all here to help.. but, be that as it may, I took to the problem and located a 6" hose going from the top of the tranny to the back of the toque converter housing. I pulled off one end and the pressure released.. I drove the car with the hose detached and drove it hard for about 6 miles.. came home, pulled the tranny dip, NO PRESSURE!!! But.. will this be a safe way to travel? and what does this hose do?.. no offense and many apologies to anyone that was put off with my post.. thank you FGUG

  4. If it's been parked a while, the tranny doesn't want to kick right in. It will sit there and slip for 15-30 seconds before kicking in and going, forward or back. This tranny was professionally rebuilt a little over a year ago while the guy I bought it from owned it. What kind of problem am I most likely looking at? It runs and shifts great the rest of the time, and it doesn't do it at all if you start the car and let it warm up before you get in it to go somewhere. Thanks.

Try changing the vacuum modulator... get a COMPLETE tranny fluid flush from a dealer, (about 135 bucks) they will run new fluid through the system as the OLD fluid gets pushed out.. when you get it back, remove 1 pint from the system with a 1/4 inch tube attached to an electric pump directly down the dipstick hole.. replace 1 pint with a pint of SEAFOAM TRANS-TUNE.. about 6 bucks.. this should clear up the problem.. oh, you may want to take off the governor and sit it in WD-40 for an hour.. or do the "de-burring" technique.. this should make yer tranny shift nicy nice

  5. I have a 1991 loyal that was in a ladies yard here in colebrook Ct.. "tranny blown" according to the owner.. got it for 50 bucks.. body is exceptional and 4WD works great..interior excellent..would not shift out of first gear, but shifted into 2nd with stick control lever.. put in a new Vacuum modulator for 40 bucks, wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter.. complete tranny flush by a dealer, then took out a pint of fluid via a tube and small electric pump in the tranny fluid stick.. car runs great and shifts great..grand total , about 300 bucks! . only problem? there is pressure building up in the tranny.. after you drive a while, if you pull the dipstick to the tranny, fluid will blast out.. I need to know if there is an exploded diagram of this transmission that I can locate the tranny vent, or if anyone here might know where the vent is located.. I will kiss the soles of the first person who can help me.. oh, by the way, it snowed here a couple days ago.. for fun, I thought I would try drivin the car in 4WD over the snow plowed up on the side of the road by our local plow trucks.. it was about 15 inches deep and very heavy, wet snow.. this car went through it like a hot knife through a stick of butter! will I sell this prize?? Not a chance!! please help with the vent question!! thanks/ FGUG

  6. Just what can cause overheating? I have a 91 legacy Ls.. and it runs great, but it keeps overheating.. the local dealership changed the thermostat and put in new coolant.. but the same thing happens.. is there a thermal sensor that could cause this to happen?? the 2.2 is the "best engine" subaru has made according to many.. what about the head gasket? are these engines prone to the problem? I don't want to sell this for nothing if it is worth keeping. it only has 150 K and was NOT beaten at all by previous nuclear family.. any help is appreciated.. I am getting desperate! thanks

  7. Hi, Sunday morning... cold as a witches boob here in NW Ct... so, I guess its a ggggreat day to research in the warmth... does anyone know if the 3AT tranny on a 1991 Loyale 4x4 has a vent somewhere.. after the tranny is warm.. there is a build up of pressure .. when the stick is pulled there is a WHOOOSH... I replaced the vac modulator, and pulled the gov.. no gear wear and the spring ends go back to normal position. the car ran and shifted great for about an hour, after I put the new Vac/mod in.. prior to that , iit woul not shift at all out of drive, unless you put it into 2nd manually.. PLEASE HELP. Thank

  8. Where can I get a new tranny governor for 3AT loyal ? the one I have looks good , but if its not, can I get this at an auto parts place or is it a dealer part?. also. I drained my gear oil. where is the filter for the gear box located? or is there one? the governor had a foul smell from tranny fluid, but I drained the tranny and put new fluid in , why will the "old fliud" smell be evident still? thanks. Fgug

  9. I have a 1991 legay AWD .. I bought it in Milford Ct, drove it 70 miles home in heavy traffi.. 70mph for a good part of the way.. next day, the car starts to overheat.. I get it to a dealer.. new thermostat, and coolant, same problem.. it can drive all day , no high heat, and then out of nowhere, it spikes... It has not blown out of the radiator, but has blown into the overflow.. I posted it for sale, but maybe, after reading some great posts, I should look into what you all here may think..any help would be great. thanks, Gug

  10. hi

i had the same problem, listen:

    1. change your gear oil + filter

2.take out the governer, clean it , take some silikon and new 3 screws and put it back (close it that it will be close complitly, close it very well, even for air - like in vacum).

    good luck.

I took out the governor.. what should it look like if good? I changed the tran ny what is "apple coring"? the hose was removed from the modulator.. no fluid came out.. does this mean the modulator is good? also, I will change the gear oil.. does anyone have the capacity.. anything I should look for? thanks to all/ Frank

  11. Approx. 10 inches towards the back from the passenger-side front axle. It is next to and towards back from an electrical solenoid that also screws into the case.

Skip and moosens are dead on with their comments about the 3-speed automatic (aka 3AT around here). Keep the fluid clean and filled, and if it looks or smells burnt then replace the fluid. Replace it anyway as insurance. Replace it twice to be nice. BTW, if/when you replace the vacuum modulator it will dump ATF, so be prepared for the stuff coming out.

(sorry for stealing your glory, moosens.)

Thank u Northwet.. also, I was wondering if there is a tranny vent.. when I take the dip stick out after fdriving, there is pressure released.. I think if there is a vent, then it is clogged. Fgug

  12. Frank,a couple of things you want to check are the governor, which is accesable from the engine bay and is located on the passenger side.It has three bolts in a triangular pattern just back from the bellhousing a bit.Take that out and check the small cylindrical gear for "apple coring".There is a metalic version available but getting hard to find.A really good counterperson will research and find one for you.

I've had them run better just cleaning off the mechanism too.

Also, the modulator on the underside of tranny is worth changing out. They're about $25 and will make a difference, especially in a car that has been sitting.

When you pull the small rubber hose off of it you might see some oil drip out. That will indicate that you definitely need to swap it out.

Feel free to contact me through email or PM

    Paul

Moosens, where is the modulator? do I access it from jacking the front end? Is it near the tranny oil pan? Thanks, Gug

Paul, thanks. I will check that out today and issue the results.. BTW, I would like to say that I have been researching my problem all week, and got literally nowhere online until I got onto thiis board.. you are all very knowledgeable and your help will save me and many others many dollars and time. so, thanks very much.

  14. Not a direct swap. Loyale is 4x140 and the legacy is 5x100(???) You can drill out a six hole rim or drill your hubs or get Pugs. There are lots of post on this, try the search function and you'll get tonnes of info. Welcome to the board, you have a hand full of good people on your side of the country. Later, Tim

Chef. thanks so much for the reply. I really want that extra height.. what shocks do you advise on that would create the lift I am looking for without a full fledged lift kit? Frank
