(Which car do you have?) My regular mechanic does an initial reading for free, maybe yours would for a small fee. Dealer would be about $75 or an hour's labor for diagnosis. Marty
Diagnose for leaking head gasket, just in case. See following sites:

Worst case scenario: head gasket leak (a Subaru issue). Leaking air would push coolant into reservoir, & spot overheating would make temp gauge erratic.
