  1. Thanks for all the advice...just wondering if you could give me a couple of ball park figures here so I know kind of what to expect...how much (roughly) for a top-off vs. a full conversion? Is "topping off" something a total novice like me could do myself? Sounds like not, since the R12 won't be available, right...? In the meantime, should we be not using the A/C at all? We have been, but will stop if it's doing more damage. It's the same as I earlier reported -- a/c setting is cooler than the "vent" setting, but still noticeably less cold than it used to be. Thanks again for the comments!
  2. Thanks, simbey1982...I'll take it in to someone I know this week hopefully and see what he has to say...I hope it isn't anything major.
  3. Hello all... I bought a used 92 Legacy, which I LOVE, back on June 1st. I haven't had a single problem until my wife and I went to the cottage last week. After about 4 hours of mostly continuous operation, the a/c started failing. It didn't quit entirely, the a/c was still cooler than using "vent," but it wasn't as cold as it usually is. This was the first time the car had been in use for so long (with us as owners). It was a hot, humid day, sunny and in the 90's (low 30's for those who use metric). Since then, the a/c has not returned to normal. It works, but not nearly as effectively as it used to. The blower seems fine, it's just the air temperature is not very cold anymore. Any ideas as to what may have caused this to happen and what we can do to fix it/have it fixed? We're in a crazy heat wave here in Southern Ontario that has lasted all summer and we really miss our a/c -- it's the first time we've had it in years! Thanks in advance for your thoughts... -- V_D
  4. firstwagon: US gallons. The early readings are 23.7 and 30 MPG, which is 11.9 and 9.4 L/100 km. Like I said, that's pretty much all in the city.
  5. Thanks to all who responded to my question about keeping gas mileage. I've double checked and the numbers are in: I've only had the Subaru since June 1st, but the two numbers so far are 23.7 MPG and 30 MPG! Not bad, I guess...I'm really only familiar with litres and km but I think anything around 30 MPG is quite good, isn't it? I'm getting about 250-350 km on a single tank in the Subaru so far, driving mostly in the city (there's a big range there because I've only filled it up three times so far!). My record is almost 500 km (492 km to be exact) on a single tank in the 1992 Tercel that we had previously. It could get 425-475 km on a single tank if it was all highway -- then it developed some serious engine and exhaust problems and my mileage went down to about half that! I'll be taking the Subaru to Toronto this weekend, I'm anxious to see what kind of MPG I get on the 401. Vintage_Darjeeling 92 Legacy
  6. I sure do know where Belleville is -- I grew up in Kingston! I haven't heard of carqest -- is that a chain of repair shops? Is is Carqest or Carquest? How much did your exhaust repair cost you? Did you have to get a full muffler/exhaust pipe/converter and everything? And that funny "Y" shaped thingie at the front? Sorry to be so technical, lol.
  7. Hi there, interesting thread! I'm new here and hope you don't mind a couple of newbie questions, feel free to ignore them if they're too irritating... Can someone tell me exactly how you're calculating your mpg (or km per litre, since I'm up here in Canada)? I've been trying to keep track of my fuel effeciency lately but I'm not positive that I'm doing it right, so I'm just interested in being told the correct way to do it by some "pros" so that I can confirm what I'm doing is correct. I've never been much of a math whiz... Secondly, how can I find out exactly how much gas my tank will hold (without emptying the poor thing and then filling it up)? I have a 92 Legacy. Thanks, all!
  8. 260,000 miles! That's incredible! Our mechanic says that our Legacy is going to have some exhaust problems in the near future, though. Apparently it already has an aftermarket muffler that someone has stuck on and since the entire exhaust is one piece and the flanges are weak, we're going to have to replace the whole thing at a cost of something like $1500 (Cdn). There's some large piece up at the front of the exhaust alone that costs $700 and can only be purchased through a Subaru dealer. Does that make any sense? The exhaust sounds great now but apparently the pipe is very thin and won't last much longer. I found this out before I bought the car, incidently, when I took the car to my mechanic before we finalized the sale; the seller took some money off the selling price in response.
  9. Luckily, our car has been given Krown rust protection every year -- the body is in perfect shape, it looks like it just came out of a showroom, not at all like it's a 13 year old car. But thanks for the tip -- we'll keep up the rust treatments. I don't want anything happening to my baby!!
  10. We purchased a 1992 Legacy (not AWD) a couple of weeks ago with only 123,000 kms on it. I'm completely in love with it -- I only want Subarus from now on! I can't believe what a great car it is -- I literally don't want to let it out of my site! Even though my wife and I share one car, she's only driven it once (for 5 minutes) since we bought it -- she can't pry me out of the driver's seat! I typically do 80% of the driving anyway, but I still can't imagine anyone really driving this car but me! Luckily, she's understanding and indulges me. I haven't seen any other 1992 Legacys on the road in the city, we've been looking lately -- that seems strange, given what a great car it is. We're in London, Ontario, Canada (about two hours from Detroit). If I ever see one, I'm going to beep and wave -- a courtesy from one Subaru driver to another. So that's it, there's no real point to this post other than to say Subarus are the greatest cars of all time and I've never been so in love with a car...anyone else with a similar Legacy or story, feel free to add to this post or email me about it! I wasn't at all surprised to find such a massive board dedicated to the Subaru after I'd test-driven it...these cars are a true hidden gem! Subaru Forever!
