I am looking for some OE oil filters for my 01 legacy L. I looked at subarugenuineparts.com and didn't see any listed for that car. I also have an 05 saabaru linear with the 2.5 engine. I have a pile of filters for that car. Any chance they are the same filters? Where is a good place to find that stuff out?

There is a local guy selling an SVX. It is a 1994 FWD Auto with 133K miles. I have heard of 3 common problems...transmission death, wheel bearing issues, and brake rotor issues. He says it has never had transmission issues and he has owned it for 3 years. He is asking $1400...does that sound fair? I hate that you can't search for three letter terms because I am sure a bunch of stuff has been covered but I can't find it. I would like to swap in a 5 or 6 speed manual if there are issues with the auto at some point. Is that a doable thing and how much money to buy a used one and have it installed? I have also heard that the wheel bearing issue is fixed if you use a legacy bearing. Can you also swap in brake rotors and calipers from a legacy? Thanks

He said the compression was OK and it was an external leak. He had originally said it would be $400 for the timing belt including new water pump, thermostat, and seals. Then he added $50 for the oil pump seal. He had said it would be $1000 extra for the head gasket:eek:. I told him never mind the head gasket and just to the Tbelt and stuff for $450. He said since he already had it half apart and in there he would do the head gaskets for $550 to make it an even $1000. I am soft and I told him to do it. In the end it was $1012 for head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, oil pump gasket, valve cover gaskets, coolant, oil, thermostat, and a couple other seals. :-\ I guess if the head gasket was on the way out I got a damned good deal. If not, I spent $1K on a timing belt job.

I just brought my 2001 Legacy L in for a timing belt change. It is at 102K miles and it is recommended for 105K. I was quoted $400 for the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat. I have never used this place before but they only do subarus and have a pretty nice shop. When I called to ask if they were finished and when I could pick up the car they told me there were other problems they found while working on it. They said the oil pump was leaking and the left cylinder head was leaking. He told me it would be an additional $50 for the oil pump and an additional $1000-$1200 for the head gaskets. I have never see a drop of fluid in my driveway and never had any issues with overheating or anything. Is the fix worth it? Is he taking me for a ride? I thought head gasket issues with the 2.5 were fixed in the SOHC versions after 2000. The guy told me there were issues up to 2003 and that he would use the new material head gasket from subaru that should last the life of the car.

The back passenger side door on my wife's legacy is sticking, squeeking, and resisting opening and closing. If you have it open and swing it to shut it it stops half closed and you need to give it another shove. Should I just WD-40 the hinges? There is also a piece that connects the door to the frame..not a hinge but not sure what it is. Looks like a flat bar with grease on it. It is an 01 legacy sedan.

I had a white 97 Legacy GT. I just got a new car (saabaru) and sold my legacy to my brother. It was in my parents driveway and a tree fell on it. My brother had not yet registered and insured it so I don't think he can get any $$ for it. The tree hit the hood, damaged both fenders, and broke the windshield. It also could use a new bumper and grill. Where is the best place to get these kind of parts. Is it worth it or should I just junk it? The engine was running strong and the body was in great shape.

I have a 97 Legacy GT with about 190K miles. It has had a slow leaking rear main seal for about 80K miles which I have pretty much ingnored. It has also had a slight hot smell regularly and very light whispy smoke from the engine compartment occasionally. This has gone on also for 80-100K miles. Recently the temp guage rocketed up while driving. I shut the car off and allowed it to cool and checked the oil. The level was OK. I checked the coolant and it appeared to have oil in it. Does it sound like a head gasket to you guys? Should I have the head gasket, rear main seal, and timing belt done all at once? Should I just junk it and start with something newer? I hate to give up on it because it was been great for 5 years...pretty much just oil and brakes.

Thanks guys. I did tell the mech to go ahead with it. I priced the stuff online and it came to $415+shipping. Rotors and alternators are heavy so the shipping would probably push it over $450. $660 from the dealer I guess isn't too bad but you are right, that is for turned rotors. For new rotors he said it would be $760. That is my parts price +$300. Probably 3 hours labor at $80 + 10% part markup. It just hurts because I have done the front brakes and could probably do the rears with no problem. I have never done an alternator but next time I will likely try.

I do most work on my own car (97 Legacy GT) and some on my wifes 01 Legacy. She was having some electrical issues and brake soft brakes with noises. She brought it into the dealer and the quote we just got on repair is $330 for new alternator and installation and $330 for turned rear rotors and new rear pads. Does this sound high to anyone? I put new front rotors and pads on her her car last year and it was like $180 for the parts. Also, is there a good online location to order subaru parts like alternators, pads, rotors, and stuff.
