  1. Well, Swapped out the gauge cluster and the alt gauge worked, but the car still died. Swapped the carb and now it seems to be running ok, hasn't died...yet...
  2. I would say starved. Sometimes it sputters, and sometimes it just drops. Everything else continues to work, and most times it starts right back up. I have a ton of spare parts so cost is not really an issue, but I do agree on time
  3. Ok, got this car from a friend. here's the scenario: 84 GL wagon with 3 inch lift on 28s. 315,000 miles, 4 speed. Idles and revs fine, but as soon as it starts driving it dies. Usually starts right up after about 5 minutes, no noticeable smoke. Has anyone else experienced this? I haven't and I'm totally stumped. Not sure if it's a fuel, exhaust, or electrical issue. Replaced both fuel filters and fuel is certainly getting to the carb. Since I can high rev it while it sits all day I'm not convinced it's a carb issue. The exhaust is only a few years old, no cat, temperature steadily declines down the length of it so I'm pretty sure there's not a backpressure issue either. Alt gauge shows low charge, drops lower for each accessory, down to about 8. However a nearly full charge is shown at the battery. I've replaced the Alt, Disty, Battery, and Coil and nothing changes. I'm wondering if it's a faulty gauge... I had a friend with an early VW Rabbit who had a faulty circuit in the gauge cluster that caused the electrics to cut out. Everything on this car continues to work, it just shows a really low charge. Is there some sort of fail safe circuit in this car that cuts off fuel when the charge runs too low? Or vice versa? The most recent work done on the car before this issue was replacing the fuel gauge sending unit. It ran fine for a few weeks before this issue so I don't believe they're related. Suggestions?
  4. Yeah I've heard that, but I've emailed them a few times and never got a response. I do have a few other rigs I'd like to lift, too, but I need this one done before Christmas, and I don't think I can pool that much money together before then.
  5. I have an 84 wagon I'd like to lift a few inches. Allied raised their prices to $700 for the kit and I'm not sure about the other companys I've googled. I'm wondering if theres anyone in Central Oregon or the surrounding area that does a decent job or sells a decent kit on a budget. It's my Girlfriends car, so I need a safe job, not a hack job. Does anybody even still do this, or am I gonna hafta bite the bullet and go with AA? I've seen their kit and I know it's good, but it's 7x what I paid for the car!
  6. Does anybody know a good company to get a head gastget set for a EA81 Turbo? I've called the local parts stores and they have trouble even finding the right part number, let alone the part. I've also heard that they require a special graphite (?) head gasket compared to the fel pro style. I've been told that a standard EA81 Gasket will work, but then where do I get the gaskets for the turbo itself? Does anyone have any experience with this? and is there anything different that I should look out for compared to the EA81? I've done a few head gaskets on carbed EA81's, but never a turbo.
  7. Wow all you guys are so helpful! That would be great if you could post that paperwork. Please let me know if you do!
  8. Does anybody know how to equip an ea81 vehicle with A/C? I have some parts cars with working air conditioning and woul like to switch the A/C over to one or two of my nicer ones. I know the cars are set up for dealer installed A/C, but is it a simple bolt in? the compressor and condenser look like no problem, but is there a different style heater core? What, if anything, needs to be changed under the dash? Has anybody done this before? What I'd really like to get my hands on is the dealer instructions, but those can't exist anymore, can they? Any advice on this would be very helpful!
  9. Ok I'm sure this has been asked alot so please just point me to the right forum... Who knows how to lift a late model leagcy? Wheels? Shocks? Who has kits? Anybody done one (Besides the AA wagon, I've seen it.)? My buddies front bumper SCRAPED in his DRIVEWAY! That is until it got unintentionally removed. In other words, he needs clearance, and something he can do that's easy on the wallet. It's a 98 Outback.
  10. Dude both 2nd and 3rd Gen soobs came with single AND dual range. HOWEVER: *Automatic trans. are all single range (Hi) *DLs are single range (Hi) *Some 3rd Gen have push button single range (Hi) I say stick with the 2nd Gen because it may have a little less power BUT it has no timing belts and less computer BS.
  11. I dunno If anyone mentioned this or not, but some company is making a boat-car. It runs around $150,000, looks like a mid 90's Camaro convertable, and is powered by a (dig) WRX motor! Thats technically a floating Subaru, right?
