Hello, just got a 93 Impreza LS (auto tranny) this week and one of the issues it has is jurking into slow speed turns which I understand is torque bind. I've seen a few solutions, both temporary and permanent that I am considering and am looking for some input from someone tat has a bit more experience with this than I do.

I've heard of the ATF additive that may or may not help, I've also tried disabling AWD via the FWD fuse (which for some reason also made it not shift out of first O.o) I read on another thread of a 96 Impreza having the same problem and replacing the transfer solenoid solved it. http://www.subarupartsforyou.com has the transfer duty solenoid for about 100 bucks, just wondering if doing this should be my first, or last resort, also im a bit of a novice when it comes to mechanics, know just enough to get me by, never done any major work on a car, so any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

there's a couple other little issues with my impreza but I guess this is the most important for me to tackle at the moment.

Oh one more thing, theres a little metal toggle switch right above my hood release that seems to not be stock, and switching it makes the car shift smoother, any ideas? hehe

Thanks!

very simple:

make sure all your tires match in size, tread depth, and wear. 4WD trans like this have to have good matching and frequently rotated tires. no point in fixing anything only to ruin the new "fixed" stuff.

change the fluid. a simple drain and refill isn't enough since only a portion of the fluid comes out. need to do at least 3 or just have it flushed by a shop.

this can easily fix torque bind, might take 100 miles of driving though, so hard to tell right away.

being a used car you just bought i'm going to assume it's been this way for a while and a simple trans change wont' fix it. if not, find the GM limited slip additive and add it to your fluid.

done deal.

otherwise you need a Duty C solenoid but these are robust transmissions and that additive seems to work well.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to head out in a few to check the parts stores around here and see if I can track down that additive.

My apologies if this was a redundant post, I did see similar posts involving different years and manual trans as opposed to automatic, so I wasn't sure if those methods were applicable in my case.

Thanks again for the help and I'll post my results once it's all done.
