My son is in need of a replacement motor for his 99 Legacy Wagon 2.5. His has a "bottom end" noise , might be piston slap. It did over heat & some say it's typical to spin a bearing. Has a new waterpump, idler, t belt & did'nt see any bubles in the overflow or coolant in the oil....but....So what engine will replace it with out too much trouble eg...wiring ecm that kind of stuff. I'm "handy round engines (old school stuff) but this is my first attempt with a Subaru....have had em for years...Glf's, XT's & Svx's This is the first time we've had engine trouble,

95 2.2 with EGR will bolt and plug right in. Search the site for 2.2 swap, there's tons of info.

Any 1996-1999 EJ25 (except 99 forester)

Any 1995-1998 EJ22 with EGR (96-98 will require exhaust manifold which bolts right in place).

 

Follow those directions and you have a very simple, bolt in, plug and play swap.
