4.11 5speed d/r?

Featured Replies

i have tried to read old threads to see if this is possible but just got kinda confused.... ist it posible to take the 4.11 diff out of a legacy 5speed tranny and put it into a gl tranny that currently has 3.90 gears in it? i have both trannys in my shop and was wondering if this would work to help me turn the 29s a little easier... thanks, spencer

.... I'm going to reply to this.

I've said this on this forum 10 or so times before but here goes again.

The pinion shaft in the EA82 PT4WD gearbox is fixed to the gears on the secondary shaft and the EJ AWD box's pinion runs through that shaft. So unless you can heat treat, precision cut, weld, precision balance and heat treat again then its a no go.

You can however buy a Forester gearbox from Australia with a 4.11 diff and a 1.44 low range ratio. Or buy a Liberty EJ D/R and play with pinions and gears with any manual 5sp US box to get what you want. But even that takes a little knowledge into how all the parts in a gearbox works and how to dismantle and remantle the box. Also getting the diff pretensions, preloads and backlash set right can be tricky and sometimes require some specialty tools.

Either option would require an imported trans. We didn't get ANY EJ D/R transmissions over here.

To the OP. It can be done. But the different cuts to the gear sets will make it grenade in about 200 miles.

Additionally, it is only a few certain EJ 5spds that even have the correct gearset ratio to match the EA d/r gears. And again, even with matching #s of teeth on each gearset, there is still something different about the cut of the EJ gear teeth.

Best bet for real wheeling is to install a 3.9 EA82 D/R and have a lengthened driveshaft made.

Not to threadjack, but do you have any more info about it Phiz?

Sorry I am too busy to buy, pack and ship gearboxes.

They sell for about $800AUD over here and shipping at a guess would be $200 a box.

You might find someone interested in shipping one over for you on OffroadingSubarus.com or AUSubarus.com.

I think they were out of 98 to 02 forester but could be the later ones or might be both.

Short answer: no. Not without a lot of custom fab work.

thanks, the short answer is kinda what i was lookin for. im pretty happy with the 3.90, the 2.2 does alot better than the 1.8 carb did. went out today offroad for the first time since the swap and it was sweet! i think i want to get a lsd out of a turbo and change it to 3.90 as well. kinda aprehensive about puttin in the welded one, not sure how axles/output shafts will hold up. thanks tho
