November 9, 200916 yr 87 gl wagon. 1.8 carb. car starts then dies instantly the first time. 2nd attempt if i have gas at half throttle it will run but if i take it off it will die right away if i keep it at about 3k rpm's for a good minute or so then it will run fine. from what ive searched it sounds like the carb? not sure if its manual or auto.. or how to tell even... im pretty car literate but this is my first subaru and first carb'ed car..
November 9, 200916 yr The choke spring's on the EA82 Hitachi's have a bad habit of wearing through at the end with the hook in it that allows it to close the choke plate. Remove the top of the air filter and look at the choke butterfly when it's cold - if it's wide open then your spring is broken. Pretty common in cold climate area's or anywhere that an EA82 has been parked outside of a garage. You might be able to get a new choke from the dealer. I've never tried but that's where I would look first. You will have to drill the heads off a couple rivet's to remove the housing - just replace them with self-tapper's. You could also get a "manual choke conversion kit" from just about any auto-parts store for about $10 to $15. With this and a couple hours to install it, you can just have a pull-choke like you are back in the 1950's. GD Edited November 9, 200916 yr by GeneralDisorder
November 10, 200916 yr It is pretty easy to remvoe the choke housing cover (drill out rivets) and then reset the Existing spring. Even if it's broke, you can simply bend a new hook on it and reset it. Must be done cold, on a reasonably cool day.
