2000 Outback sedan

Featured Replies

I am close to purchasing a 2000 outback sedan w/ 91000miles. i was wondering if anyone could tell me some things to look for before buying, such as known issues or whatnot. If not maybe someone could point me in the direction of another forum or writeup on this generation outback/legacy where i could read about how this model has performed over time and mileage. Thanks in advance.

If you look at the bottom of this post, there are links to similar questions.

Short list:

External headgasket leak.

Torque bind

Tire condition(all 4 should be matched in age, size and wear)

The 2000 Legacy with automatic transmission may develop a condition where it is reluctant to shift into forward gear when moving the gear shifter from R to D. It seems only to affect the 1999 and 2000 models. Suggest reading through the thread..........."FIXED A/T delayed forward engagement," to get a better understanding of the problem, and how it can be fixed using Trans-X additive to the A/T fluid.

At 91,000 miles be prepared to replace the timing belt, idlers, seals and water pump. Will run between $500 & $1,000, use this to negotiate the price.

In some ways I liked our 2000 better than our current '06. :-\
