Hesitation on 85 GL maybe water in gas?

Featured Replies

I bought an 85 GL wagon out of a yard and got it running. Starts and runs great for about a quarter mile and then stumbles. if I pump the gas I can keep it running but the minute I try to move it just stumbles flat on it's face. I'm thinking it might be water in the gas, possible bad choke, or that I have a fuel delivery problem in the pump, filter, or carb. I added water remover and am waiting overnight to see if it makes any difference. If anyone has the same experience or ideas, I'd love to know. I'm not too shure if it matters but it is the hitachi carb.

Others who are in the know (carbs) will jump in and help on this.....

I confess stupid when it comes to carb stuff....

agree... sounds like choke. How is the timing?

Fuel pump possible...but I tend to think they work or don't work kind of thing....

fuel filter.... possible...

Fresh gas and use Seafoam in the gas if they have sat helps.

Sounds like a great find.....

water in the fuel will cause blockage at the fuel filter. the filter material is made of paper, and the water will soften it causing blockage.

You need to change the filter if you do suspect water in fuel.

Vacuum leak? It seems to run great on choke, but then quits when the choke comes off, so maybe there is a hose unplugged.
